I'm in the South, so we have lots of culinary treats some might find strange. One is salted peanuts in a bottle of soda (traditionally an RC cola). You drink it, and you get peanuts to eat. So yummy! We put salt on watermelon, black pepper on cataloupe, black pepper on banana sandwiches (with peanut butter OR with mayo), and sunflower seeds on ice cream...not to mention dipping our fries in chocolate shakes. ------------------ "All deaths are suicides, do you realize that? Every single one. The only distinction is that, with some people, suicide is a subconscious choice, and with others it's a conscious choice. Otherwise, those who commit suicide and those who succumb to accident, illness or "old age," die for exactly the same reason: belief in the inevitability of death." Linda Goodman IP: Logged |

One thing popular here that I will not try is corn bread crumbled up in a glass of buttermilk. Yuck!------------------ "All deaths are suicides, do you realize that? Every single one. Let's see, this is not exactly outside hte box, but where I live, there is this **Amazing** ginger ale (Vernors), and when you are feeling ill, the doctors recommend heating it up and drinking it warm...yummm, so good!Being so close to Canada, some of us Michiganders eat our fries with malt or white vinegar and extra salt IP: Logged |

Well, I'm glad your rat has a companion. Yeah, the fish restaurants here serve malt vinegar with the ries, but I've never tasted it. I'm a ketchup guy. ------------------ "All deaths are suicides, do you realize that? Every single one. OMG, down here...central Florida, "Boiled Peanuts" are a traditional snack food. That's fresh harvested, green, unsalted peanuts in the shell which have been boiled for hours in highly salted water. I don't know which is worse; boiled peanuts or the "Mullet Cakes" served at most parties. Think Crab Cakes, except with a bland, disagreeable tasting shredded fish substituted for the crab. Boiled peanuts are delicious when cooked right. if they are rubbery, they are cooked too long. Okra is slimy, but if cooked right (with a mix of flour and cornmeal), it's crispy like chicken. People who hate okra love mine.

I'm with you Juni. The boiled peanuts I had were extremely disagreeable, almost slimy. Never again. Randall, I grew up with buttermilk and cornbread. Real churned buttermilk, unpasteurized and crusty, crunchy cornbread, sometimes with chitlins. Yummmmmm The buttermilk offered in grocery stores today is a pale imitation.
