It impresses me that artichoke it is actually a flower blossom. Thinking about this made me realize that there are probably at least 75 different flowers that are edible, some as main course and some for garnish. The flowers used for garnish are not always safe to eat.

How do you know what is safe to eat? Not all Chefs know, so you can't expect to ask and be sure. It's best to do research on your own first and to trust those who safely consume what they serve you.

I've had marigolds in a salad, day lilies served on a cake, and zucchini blossoms in frittata. I've never been brave enough to grow my own flowers for consumption but think that would be fun to do.

They say never eat flowers that come from a flower shop or picked wild because you don't know about the pesticides being used. Best to grow them in a vegetable garden. That makes sense.

Also not all parts of the flower are safe or tender or tasty. For some, just the petals, or the tips. It depends on the plant.

I think even the flowers of certain herbs can be used in recipes. Usually I pinch them off to continue harvesting the leaves.

Anyone have experience serving flowers for their unique individual tastes or for garnish?

Nasturtium are great for a pepper flavour.

I really like many different ones, I used to add them to a salad package I made up once a week from my Organic Community Garden Project.

I added Calendula, Violets, three different types of Basil.

There are many different herbs I have grown, like Hyssop, Red Bergamot, Anise Hyssop oh gosh, so many I can't even remember.

I heard that borage is good for essential fatty acids. Brain flowers. I might think about juicing flowers also. Ever do that?

Chinese chives

Some kind of water lilies.

Pumpkin flowersss

I love stuffed pumpkin flowers. Stuff them with spiced pork mince/beef mince, mushrooms, spyring onions n garlic, then stir fry them.

Another is Telosma cordata:

(Tonkin jasmine, pakalana vine, Tonkinese Creeper, Chinese violet)

Can be cooked into a soup with prawn, mince pork. Or stir fried with garlic and shredded chicken. Or made into a salad with shredded carrots, cabbage, tomatoes n chicken...etc...

And I see Ellynlvx mentioned rose... Yum. I love rose preserve (gulkand).
