My best friend and I grew up next door to each other. We ate shamrocks and onion grass out of our backyards all the time. Shamrocks taste like lemons with a nice, extra tang. I'm telling you this in time for St. Patrick's day

We used to microwave marshmallows and while the mush was scalding hot, we would roll it into balls, burning our hands, and drop them granulated sugar. They hardened and made "candy."

We also used to microwave cheddar cheese in a mug until it was plasticy and gnaw on that. Gee I wonder why I often felt sick.

We'd play "bartender" and drink stuff like coffee granules mixed with lemon concentrate just for the fun of it.

And that's just my history with one other person. My family used to go on vacations in Maine and my brothers once picked mussels right off the rocks and we had them for dinner. They were SO good. Some people lost respect for me after I told them that story, like only cavemen would go picking at slug-like things that were attached to rocks. But I'm serious they were delicious!

What did you eat??

It's not weird really, but when I got sprouts on my sandwich once in awhile, at lunchtime other kids would ask why I had grass on my sandwich. "Why are you eating grass?" lol

I'll have to think about it some more.

I loved Lemon Clover too!
Still do!
It grows wild in my yard. http://vifarms.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/wood-sorrel-salad/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalis_stricta

Wild cress and dandelion and cattail and mustard and Beechnuts and violets.....
yummy......I could go on and on about the wild eats I loved!

Love wild mussels and clams too!
Hard to find them these days;
and harder to find them in waters you can trust to be clean.

Not a food, but I nibbled on coal.

I tried my best to remember some of the wacky things I was into - but, I can't really remember anything that was, I guess, common~ for me.

The weirdest thing I'll consume - in the past and present - or weirdest food habit/preference I have...

is still putting an excessive amount of hot sauce (or mustard/steak sauce) - on everything.... hot sauce/hot peppers - on everything... everything. (And, if you're wondering - yes, even with desserts - although I prefer pickles/vinegar/salts with sugary dishes more than spices... lol)

I won't put sardines in my ice cream though... haha (oscar)

I learned the hard way that orange juice and pickles don't really go together... @___@

I don't think it's weird - some might - but I always loved scrapple, red beet eggs, and chicken hearts/giblets, mutton stew...

would eat cans/jars of sauerkraut too~ mmmnnn
@____@

wild allium plants~ (onions, garlic... whichever) - and yeah - dandelions - into the salad/omelette/soup they went! lol

elderberries too...

Though my experimenting with wild plants was done ignorantly - (meaning, I really didn't know there were dangers to some of the plants I/we ingested at the time)- >.<;

mustard mash potato volcanos <3 - even my mother forgot I use to do that one until I started questioning her if that memory was real - lol (I have a lot of -repressed?- memories) Tried this again recently, since remembering it... lol -still weird and loving it- XD

I like the cross-eyed expression my husband makes when he smells some of these things... (he hates pickles, mustard, vinegar, and hot peppers) T___T fuddy duddy... all he likes is cinnamon... lol

I ate the white bits of the red hisbicus blooms. Many other kids did too. It tasted crisp and a little sweet.

And we would often get the nectar too lol.

Hot ones, dill ones, garlic ones, beet juice ones, curry ones;
you name it!

Do you like braised or deep fried chicken livers and hearts?
The Mr.Chicken in town sells very good deep fried chicken livers and okra!
Oh yes, sauerkraut, pounds of it!
Like it best with pumpernickel or anise seed and a wee bit of pickled red sweet pepper.
Oh yes, the onion family!
Must be very careful though because many tubers and bulbs are deadly.
I was very blessed in that as a little child my Native American grandmother would take me on long walks in the woods and fields and show me how to wild forage.(drove my parents nuts because I had a bad heart and was told not to exercise).
As I became older I would bring home samples of plants etc.; to identify them and then go get more if it was an edible.
Oh yes wild elderberries! Same for wild blueberries, huckleberries, currents, mulberry, strawberries, all so much much much more tasty than their tamed versions.
Thank you for your post SaturnineMoth

Those are delicious in ice cream especially if you soak them in sugar first.
Same for roses.
Sounds strange but floral ice cream is very pleasant!
Nice in cream cheese too for a cracker spread.
Other flowers are too peppery for ice cream/cream cheese spread;
but are great in salads, including coleslaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, and on sandwiches.
Nasturtium flowers-buds-leaves, Sweet wild violet, Pansy.

Hee hee;
now I want to try them.
Wonder what kind of oil would be the best?
Kind of reminds of maybe a bit like Chex Mix or a weird trail mix.

I'll be over for some pickled eggs~ Lexx!!! lol

oh - fried usually, but my Nanna sometimes prepared the (turkey/chicken) giblets at home - either or is fine then. We'd always get the fried hearts at the local auction grounds - they also had some really spectacular pulled bbq vendors, the best fries around (a bit cliche, but they were!) - and a local specialized cheese vendor (for the first time ever, I was a cheese fan! They put all kinds of meat/pepper and odd things into the cheeses they sold - so there wasn't anything plain about them - cheese usually upsets my stomach though so I'd avoid it, (not sure if it's a medical issue - add something acidic and I can eat it just fine). lol

~ ahhh, wish I had someone to explain the different plants back then, I relied on novice research if anything, and a bit of wiccan information as I got older, but mostly it was sample or the old rule of thumb, "when in doubt throw it out" ~ (definitely not scientific - but I was luckily able to avoid poisoning. haha) - It was great to be in that exploration phase - One of my favourite discoveries was using a bark salve on a rash/scuffed skin - or sort of the same thing, using willow to remedy a headache. My mother-in-law uses special tea and oils - though it isn't super useful since I don't know what plants they are in english! it's still fun to learn!~ haha (I guess it's not all too different now than back then though - since I really didn't know the names of everything at that time either!)

My grandparents did teach me about the berries in the mountains, the laurels, and different poisonous shrubs/trees.

It's a bit weird - but, when everyone else was covered from contact with poison ivy - I went 18 years without ever having any allergy to it. And, then I saw a very young growth peeking out from the sidewalk where my cousin and her baby were living - the baby was just outside and I thought nothing of it but to remove it, so the wee one wouldn't go playing with it... next day... poison ivy on my hand.
>.<; figures, right?! lol

My grandfather's first job ever - was on an orchard near the old homestead - my grandmother and him would take me out picking apples and pears - I miss the pear trees on the mountainside where they had lived back then...everything was torn down both at the homestead and their old house on the hill - state bought my family's property to make some highway pass that was completely unnecessary down by that auction- and real estate moved in and bought the land on the mountainside where the wild pear trees were... >.< It's such a shame... I can't even take my son out to my other grandparents house in the mountains to pick the berries and play in the spring waters - some idjit decided to make his entire property into a private junkyard - the water was disgusting the last time I visited... all kinds of chemicals had seeped in... It was /dangerous/ enough when it was nature (animals) out there - now it's pollution.

seriously - a shame. ; ;

oh - sorry for rambling!!! ^^; *offtobed*

oh the love of sauerkraut - (btw!) - I'm still scouring the city looking for a place that caters to the Eastern European communities - I have yet to find a restaurant dedicated to German,Polish, and Lithuanian cuisine! --- this place scares me sometimes... you have 28 different Indian (South Indian - West Indian) restaurants in the immediate vicinity of our home... not one place to get (authentic, not made for th emicrowave) halupki or even sauerbraten - /sigh

okok sorry I go now!!! haha

My ma ate some weird, by modern society's standards, food when she was growing up!
Rabbit brain stew, beaver feet, moose nose - uncooked salted potatoes were a weird thing she'd sneak every so often...

True!

@Lexx: foraging is wonderful isn't it? And floral ice cream sounds heavenly. Thank you for the real name for the shamrocks, and I am loving this link to Wood Sorrel Salad. I know a baby boy named Sorrel; his mother is a new hippy friend of mine.

@12muddy: I love hibiscus tea!

@saturnine: hot sauce

And thanks for the stories of growing up, I'm sad about what happened to the pear orchard.

My husband's family owned a farm that adjoins our suburban property. They sold it in the early 80's and now there is a development over there. What the people don't know is, there is a majestic chestnut tree growing right in their midst. Most chestnuts in America died out with the Chestnut Blight of the early 1900's, but this one is going strong!

We get chestnuts from it every year. We bring the kids over at night and collect the nuts in stealth so the people don't get tipped off to the fact that these are not horse chestnuts or whatever people take them for...they are REAL, glorious chestnuts!

@Dee: I'm very impressed with the weirdness of your chosen snack!

@Cancer/Scorpio: Yummmm! =)

@SE: Your mom sounds so cool.

No oranges? No chocolate?

But I'll bet you had the advantage of being healthier than the kids eating junk, especially the food dye.

Growing up, I ate these things, and I still do now.
I don't think these are exactly weird. but Maybe to other cultures. I know that a lot of people have looked at me like I'm Andrew Zimmern or something when I mentioned some of these things to them.

Roasted crab candy. I still eat that, like every week when I go to Chinatown
Or those bags of small dried shrimp. Omg amazing

This I didn't consume cause I wanted to, but my mother forced me and my brother to drink shark liver oil everyday. Or every other day. Her father was a fisherman, and he used to make this stuff and ship it to her.

Boiled chestnuts. Amazing

I still eat dry ramen cup noodles from time to time

Fried eggs with rice, especially with black bean rice. This is considered a "bum meal" to a lot of ppl. but Idgaf.

Carribean style fried blood sausage. I used to pig out on this all the time until I was 14 yrs old..which is when I found out that my father was not joking about these really being made of blood. That really really grossed me out. I now only eat them once a year. They are still, and always will be delicious though

Fried pork ears Dominican style
Fried pork intestines Dominican style
Carribean style tripe stew (cow stomach)
Carribean style stewed chicken feet. I will eat a large bowl of this. Yummmm

I used to eat jello powder as a child.

dippin my fries in my milkshake or icecream.
dip pork rind chips in my ice cream. It's amazing
Dipping ham and cheese sandwich(no mayo or anything else) in hot chocolate

Tangy, sharp Cheeses with fruits. I can't believe soo many consider this combo as "weird" or "nasty"! Roquefort cheese with mango or peach slices? C'mon that's amazing!

Alley cat chicken&tuna or crab flavored dry cat food. There are times when I'm feeding my cats, And i eat a couple of the kibbles(is that what you call it??)...like 4 or 5 bits. i like it lol.

I sometimes eat sliced bread with tomato sauce, and sprinkle cheese on top. This is a struggle "pizza" LOL

Snce I was a child, my mother would buy all types of flowers to make baths. I would def chow down some roses while I helped prepare those baths. Someone above mentioned eating icecream with roses. I have roses in my room, and i just went and grabbed some petals and put it in my bland a55 vanilla icecream, drizzled with a small amount of honey. And it does taste reall nice. . I've even seen rose/flower salads in some supermarkets. So other people must digg eating flowers too

Sweet condensed milk mixed with German malt beverage(I think it's called lowenbrau?).. This is sooo amazing. My mother has been feeding me this since I was a child. And I'm still obsessed with it.

Orange milk. Heavenly

And lately bacon&cheese flavored crickets.

REAL crickets?

Thank you for your list, some items are totally bizarre to me, like the crab candy, chicken feet, and sandwiches dipped in beverages.

Lol yep real crickets. Dead and dried of course.. My aqua sun friend (of course he just had to be an Aquarius ), introduced me to these this past summer. It was a dare at first to eat just one cricket... But then I started to eat the rest in the pack cause they tasted good.eeek! They come in these little packs For like a dollar online. I think on hotlicks.com. They have different flavors like sour cream and onion,barbecue,bacon and cheese,and salt and vinegar. The sour cream and onion is the best.They are called crick-ettes. And the same company have this other thing called larv-etts. But I think imma pass on that LOL.

The funny thing is that I can eat all these weird things with no problem. Yet try and get me to eat something as "simple" as oatmeal.... Yea, NOT HAPPENING!
