Moon In The Houses

When the Moon is in the 7th house
And Jupiter Aligns with Mars;
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars.
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius……..Aquarius……....Aquarius

From the musical “HAIR”

So many Moon songs, so little time Let’s talk a bit about my understanding of planets, signs and houses before you read about the Moon in each house. Each planet has characteristics that represent a certain energy or behavior. (When you read astrology books, these are usually the KEYWORDS you see next to a planet’s name.) The sign the planet is in will indicate the style in which this planetary energy will behave. A person with Venus (KEYWORDS: Social, charming, romantic, relational) in Aries will manifest Venus’ energy in a very different way than a person with Venus in Pisces. What areas of life this energy will focus on is usually described by the house the planet was in when you were born. A person with Venus in the 7th house will use Venus’ energy for partnerships. A person with Venus in the 2nd house will use that energy to acquire wealth. (I know this is somewhat simplistic but I have a simple mind ) Of course, all of this is further modified by aspects.

You will notice that I have included keywords below for each house in my explanations. It is important to remember that the first house will have the same keywords no matter what planet resides in it or what sign is on the cusp. The first house is ALWAYS about you in a natal chart. It is your persona. The sign that resides on the house cusp tells us how that house’s concerns will manifest. It qualifies the interests of the house. This is true of every house. If you have a planet(s) in a house, that planet’s energy will further modify the house issues. If you don’t have a planet in a house, look to the planetary ruler of the sign on the cusp to learn more about the affairs of the house.

You will also notice I identify the house as angular, succedent or cadent. Angular houses are 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th. You probably already know them by their other names: the Ascendant, the Descendant, the Midheaven and the Immum Coeli or Nadir. Succedent houses are 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th. Cadent houses are 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th. (This is somewhat reminiscent of the cardinal, fixed and mutable signs.)

Astrologer Robert Zoller describes planetary strength (ability to use its energy) based on whether the planet resides in angular, succedent or cadent house. To paraphrase him: Planets in angular houses perform at 100% (deliver 100% of what they promise); planets in succedent houses perform at 75% and planets in cadent houses perform at 50%. Houses are labeled succedent because (going clockwise) they succeed the angular house. Cadent houses fall away (counter clockwise) from the angular house. (The Latin word cadere means to fall.) Think of the angular house as a mountain, with succedent on one side and cadent on the other side.

Angular houses are described as personal houses – they describe the major orientations between you and the world. The succedent houses are described as houses of resource and substance. The cadent houses are described as houses of destruction, renewal and change. They are also called the mental houses. Planets in Angular houses INITIATE. Planets in Succedent houses STABILIZE. Planets in Cadent houses ASSIMILATE.

Now, on to the Moon Through the Houses

Moon in First House (Angular)
1st House Keywords: Identity, Self-Projection, Personality, Body

If your Moon is in the 1st house you are emotional, sensitive, imaginative and your emotions tend to color your personality. To use an old phrase, you wear your heart on your sleeve! Moon in 1st house people feel their emotions intensely and they may rule how you act towards others. Those lunar energies influence you more than people who have their Moons in different houses. People consider you moody and changeable, since you show your feelings so readily. You could have a real underlying need for personal recognition which makes you crave the approval of others. Watch this tendency because it allows others to take advantage of you. You love home and family and probably wouldn’t be happy living alone. You probably were strongly influenced by your Mother or other important women in your childhood. You will enjoy living or vacationing by the sea. This Moon placement suggests a need to work for the public in some way, but you may need to overcome shyness. Some of you may even be celebrities; others may be involved in humanitarian causes. We also find psychics and mediums with 1st house Moon. You probably have a round face. Make sure you don’t allow your moods to dominate your personality. Maximize the use of your caring and intuition!

Moon in Second House (Succedent)
2nd House Keywords: Self-Worth, Personal Resources

Stability and material possessions are very important to people with a 2nd House Moon. You feel emotionally secure when you have a comfortable, stable lifestyle. Your emotions are directly affected by your sense of self-worth. You measure this self-worth on how well you’ve succeeded in providing an affluent lifestyle for you and your family. If you have problems in this area, you can be very hard on yourself. You need to watch the tendency to feel like a failure because you haven’t acquired enough things. You feel this need so strongly because you need a stable home and family situation. You are protective of your values and can be sentimental about your possessions. You usually have good business ability and can be very shrewd and calculating when dealing with business issues. You can do quite well in the areas of commodities, real estate or public service. Women can be involved in your personal finances in some way, either by helping you succeed or perhaps by leaving you an inheritance. You may be interested in cooking, gardening, the arts, building and real estate. Try to remember that we are more than just our material possessions, 2nd House Moon. There are many ways to be worthy!

Moon in Third House (Cadent)
3rd House Keywords: Communications, Mindset, Brothers and Sisters, Local Trips

If your moon is in the 3rd House, you need to communicate. You can be very adamant about your opinions. Your emotions unconsciously color your thoughts and speech. You express your emotions with every word. You are dramatic, introspective and quite curious. You have a continual need to grow mentally and may have a good memory, but you often lack the concentration ability needed for serious studying, so you learn more by listening to others. Your mind can be full of miscellaneous details (Try going on Jeopardy!) You tend to be curious and tire of monotonous routines. You have a difficult time with dull or routine jobs because you enjoy continuously moving and keeping your mind occupied. You probably enjoy your siblings and have a strong attachment to them. Getting in your car and going for a short trip helps you refresh your mental and emotional outlook when you’re in a bad mood. You may be involved in travel, education, writing or the media, either as a career or a hobby. Communication is your life. Just remember to think before you speak.

Moon in Fourth House (Angular)
4rd House Keywords: Home, Parents, Family, Early Development

4th House Moon people love home, family and country. You have a strong need for stable and dependable roots. Your house is your sanctuary, where you feel most comfortable. If your home life is in disarray, so are you. You need the comfort of a steady home environment to feel secure. You may even prefer to work from home (you are the original home/office person!). Have you opened your own business yet? You have strong bonds with your family members and love feeling the sense of continuity with good things from your past. Your history attracts you and you have probably traced your family tree. You may love antiquing and your house could be filled with those gems you find on your weekend antique hunts. You have the tendency to want to protect all the weak and helpless creatures you encounter. You probably have adopted a few stray critters in your time. You also could have your aged parents living with you. It’s a given that your parents have been a major influence on your emotional well being. 4th House Moon people tend to have feelings of insecurity because of their childhood. Remember, that was then, this is now.

Moon in Fifth House (Succedent)
5th House Keywords: Giving Love, Children, Creativity, Speculation, Recreation

People with a 5th House Moon let their imaginations and emotions influence their idea of romance and their search for pleasure. You are our romantic Moon. You are capable of giving great love when you desire to do so. You are strongly emotional where your affections are concerned and can become too dependent on the object of your emotional affection. You could have many love affairs in your life and in fact, are prone to this if your marriage isn’t working out. Your family could interfere in your love life with this Moon placement. You have great charm and a poetic imagination. You are very in touch with your creativity. You could use these creative talents to work with children, including teaching them the arts. You love children and the Moon in 5th house indicates fertility so you probably have quite a few children of your own. You may be very slow in giving your children independence because there is a heavy emotional attachment to them. As well, you are probably good at sports and enjoy coaching young people. You would do well in marketing or the public relations industry. Be careful that emotional impulsiveness does not cause unwise speculation or gambling. Stay focused and don’t let your romantic visions blind you. But do keep giving us all that love

Moon in Sixth House (Cadent)
6th House Keywords: Service, Health, Work Environment, Hygiene

Moon in 6th House people can find that their work and health will be strongly influenced by their emotions. This is the house of health issues, so your emotional state at any given time will create a response in your body. In some cases, this can lead to hypochondria or psychosomatic illness. But in most cases, you are quite in tune to what’s going on in your body and you have the ability to keep yourself healthy through diet. People with the Moon in the 6th House should learn about healthy eating habits early on -- this will serve you well. You are practical and often focus on your work, expecting others to work just as hard as you do. If anything needs improving or refining, you’re the person for the job! You will make good suggestions and follow through to get the job done. It is possible that you may change your job often during your career (unless your Moon is in a fixed sign). You cannot stand being in a place that you do not feel happy or good about. This just upsets your emotional balance, possibly causing illness. You may enjoy a career in hygiene, food, or as a vet! Moon in 6th house people usually love pets. Since you know your health is affected by your emotions, there is no time like the present to make sure you are taking extra good care of yourself! We need you around at work or else nothing would get done!

Moon in Seventh House (Angular)
7th House Keywords: Partnerships, Marriage Partner, Relationships, The Public

Moon in 7th House people seek emotional fulfillment through relationships. You may get married for emotional and domestic security. You have been known to marry quite early to fulfill the need to have a steady partnership. You give much of yourself to relationships because your need is so strong to be in one. Your potential partner’s family background and social standing is of interest to you. Since you are socially popular, there is usually no lack of potential mates for you but you may have trouble deciding who to marry. However, you are rarely the “lone wolf” type, so you will decide on someone sooner rather than later. Your emotions will also affect other close partnerships in your life. You have a strong desire for social acceptance and sometimes bend over backwards to make your partnerships work. You will probably have something to do with the public, either through work or outside activities. You are politically minded and have the ability to understand office politics and use it to your advantage. You could enjoy working in the arts or glamour industry. You have the tendency to reflect your partner’s emotions or personality. Remember to allow your emotions and personality to shine.

8th House Keywords: Others Peoples’ Resources, Inheritance, Taxes, Death, Healing

People with Moon in the 8th House often have intense emotional reactions and can be sensitive to unseen forces – some might say you have a psychic ability. You are probably interested in spiritualism and metaphysical subjects and are naturally open to the hidden powers of the universe. You are also sensitive to social demands and to other people’s feelings. In partnerships, you are generous and sympathetic to your partner, perhaps knowing what they’re feeling before they do! You are receptive to non-verbal signals and can use this ability in all your encounters. You could have your greatest successes in life in partnerships with people who inspire you. Moon in Ninth House (Cadent)
9th House Keywords: Internationalism, Higher Development, Religion, Publishing, Education

People with their Moon in the 9th House have a strong need to make sure your spiritual and moral values are reflected in every area of your life. You may take on your family values and sometimes become limited by them because they are tied up in your emotions. Your thoughts could be based on feeling rather than reason. Religion and philosophy can be an important part of your life and you probably go on inward journeys before you make a move forward in the outer world. You need to understand the higher perspective in the areas you are interested in. Your need to delve further can lead to a person who goes to school throughout life. You are a natural psychic and can push the limits of your knowledge, perhaps beyond the boundaries of the Earth. You intuitively sense the spirit of the times you are living in and the morality that is prevalent and sometimes even see future events. Moon in 9th house people have a capacity to share their knowledge with others. This may lead to you becoming a teacher or instructor with a clear view of how to pass your knowledge along. You may also travel extensively or live in a foreign country. You could be involved in an international business. Don’t forget to always question your beliefs, and make sure they are not purely based on your feelings.

Moon in Tenth House (Angular)
10th House Keywords: Profession, Honor, Fame, Career, Parent, Affairs of Country

People with the Moon in the 10th House have a need to achieve public prominence and recognition. You could be involved with the public and may gain some respect for your work. If you do have a very public position you probably are highly self-protective and guard your private life. Your emotional security is dependent upon what you do for a living. You may change careers many times throughout your life to gain the honor and fame you crave and to find the right job for you. 10th house Moon people are very concerned about their reputation and their standing in the community. Your feelings are probably greatly influenced by outer events. Your parents could have been well off and they instilled in you the need to strive for approval. You could be in a career that caters to women’s issues. Some of you may even be politicians. Others of you may work for the government in some capacity. There is a tendency with this Moon placement to reach the top and sometimes lose it all in public scandal. One thing is for certain, your life will probably be remembered in some way. Don’t forget about your friendly astrologer when you reach the pinnacle of fame.

Moon in Eleventh House (Succedent)
11th House Keywords: Friends, Associations, Hopes and Wishes, Love Received

Moon in 11th House people have a powerful emotional need for friendships and group activities. You have a broad circle of friends, especially women, and can be very popular. You can have many acquaintances that come and go throughout your life. You could be highly influenced by the circle of friends you keep. You do not like to be alone and need companionship for your emotional well-being. You may also fill your need for security by joining in group activities. You like the feeling of being part of a group or organization, especially if the group does humanitarian or charity work. 11th house Moon people are interested in popular movements that envision a better world. Many times, these groups wind up meeting in your home to plan their activities. You are naturally receptive to the feelings of others and know how to influence public opinion. Your objectives are open to change and you are generally unprejudiced and detached. You may even work for one of these humanitarian organizations. You’d also be good in sales and management. Remember, Moon in 11th house, your loved ones need you to get personal sometimes and pay attention to them.

Moon in Twelfth House (Cadent)
12th House Keywords: Self Undoing, Confinement, Occult, Hidden Enemies, Seclusion, Karma

People with their Moon in the 12th House are very open to the feelings of others and can live in a world of imagination. You can be shy and your feelings may be easily hurt, but you probably won’t let anyone know this because you hide your feelings. You could emotionally isolate yourself from those around you. 12th house Moon people tend to be self-sacrificing and usually want to help humanity in some way. You are intuitive, imaginative, dreamy and mysterious. You can be very in touch with the sub-conscious emotions of yourself and others. You may be very susceptible to hypnosis so if you decide to try it, make sure the person you go to is reputable. Your need for security may cause you to withdraw completely from your work and family for brief periods of time to refresh yourself. Moon in 12th house people usually have their secrets which you share with no one. Many times, this relates to a romantic situation. Since you have compassion for the downtrodden, you may work in a hospital, charity or institution of some sort. You would also do well in the Government or a big corporation. Your challenge is to use your sensitivity wisely without becoming too vulnerable.

Thankya, thankya ZR! !

You described my 3rd House Moon to a poifect tee.

One question:
If the ruler of the sign your Moon is in is in your first house, will that accentuate its effects?
(That is, will my 1st House Uranus affect how my 3rd House Aqua Moon is expressed?)

Prox and Randall:

Thanks

Prox: With an Aquarius Moon and Uranus in your 1st house, I would think your need for freedom, independence and to stand out from the crowd (appear "unusual") would be even stronger. What sign is Uranus in? Do the Moon and Uranus aspect each other?

Many times, when I look at a natal chart, I see a theme that runs across the life. Perhaps yours centers on being a free spirit

Nope; my Moon squares my Scorp Asc, but doesn't aspect (by degrees) my Scorp Uranus.

Looking at my chart, though, with my 5th House Sun, 3rd House Moon, 12 House Pluto, 1st House Uranus, and 10th House Mars in Leo conjunct my NN, I think that my theme may be getting "out there" and assertively communicating my idiosyncratic view of the mass unconscious drives and life of humanity.
Of course, half of my planets (6) are retrograde, and I have a strong venus (in Taurus in the 7th...conjuncted by chiron) and a T-Square goin' on with Saturn (11th), Neptune (2nd) and my Sun, so - heck - I dunno.
But I'm learning a lot from this course, so
thank you to all involved in making it happen!

Now here's a funny contradiction!

I have my Sun in Pisces, which is in the 10th house.

Then I have my Moon in Gemini, which is in the 12th house.

What the hell does that mean?

Hmm..this is where things start to get tricky for me..

In Placidus system, the moon is in my 5th house, and that's where I've interpreted it for a long time, it describes me very well..(But that could also have alot to do with a pile-up of planets there..)
But in the Equal House system, my Moon is in my 4th. Now, that description also has some validity for me. I've only just recently started paying attention to the Equal House system since hanging around LL, here and I'm just not sure which one to use anymore..

But anyways, thanks for the great descriptions, ZenRia!

The cool thing about astrology is that it is a tool for self-discovery and also for third party insight. All House systems are valid. Astrology is both a science AND an art--comprised of both facts and intuition. Choose the House system which resonates best with you. And many astrologers do say that in the latter degrees, a Planet will be read as being in the next House.

hello zenria,

my moon is on the cusp of the 8th house, and i read the interpretations for both the 7th and 8th houses. both interpretations do apply. it is true that i do have not have a lack for potential mates, so it is highly doubtful one would ever see me post a " " message on this site for lack of a cyrano de bergerac or don juan de marco. and, i will never say "kiss my ass" b/c the responses have been, "okay. where are you at? i'll be there in 15 minutes."

with the combination of the 7th & 8th houses, i am very sensitive to unspoken undercurrents, body language, voices, and interaction. i can always spot inauthenticity in someone's voice and body language. my first hunch usually proves right in the end, though i have not usually relied on it much until recently.

the only thing i would add is that the moon in the 8th house adds a sensitivity and magnetism for the opposite sex. there is a strong understanding of the silent, carnal nature---call it sex hormones if you will, that gives power in gaining sexual attraction, or subliminating it entirely at one's will.

aphrodite

p.s. i am reading about sexuality via the taoist tradition, so this is also true about the 8th house interpretation. very interesting stuff!

Aphrodite,

Your information is a wonderful addition to the Moon in 8th house. I would suspect that the abilities you discuss are tempered by the sign on the 8th house cusp and any other planets in the 8th house (as well as aspects), but it makes so much sense that you would unearth and understand the undercurrents of the mating process (so to speak)

Thanks for your input!

Harpyr,

I understand your dilemma. I have recently started looking at whole signs (description to come at another time). Using this method changes the houses of most of my planets (using Placidus). And you know what, after all this time of thinking of my Moon in the 9th house, moving it to the 10th makes sense!

I come more and more to understand what Randall said in answer to you. Astrology is a tool we use to understand the word of God (I'm not defining God here so take your choice).

What we need to know or learn presents itself to us at the right time. So, look at your Moon in both places. If Moon in 4th house feels right to you now, then you, for whatever reason, need to experience it that way! Play around with equal houses with the charts of others you know and see if it describes them better to you. If it does, then you know that the tool (astrology) on that setting (equal houses) gives you a better understanding!

Maria
