Thank you, Randall.  Bingo Stella! That's it exactly, the tropics define the tilt of the Earth, which is the same thing as the plane of the ecliptic. So when the Sun comes up to the equator exactly midway between the two Tropics it is the first day of spring, the first degree of the zodiac, and the intersection of the planes of the ecliptic and equator ... all defined by the movement of the Sun between the tropics, hence the tropical zodiac!
