I am 19 going on 20 years old. I've been interested in Astrology since I was about 9 or 10 but I really didn't discover that there was more to it than just the Sun signs until I was probably about 12. Ever since then, I started going deeper and deeper into it until I realized that Astrology is fascinating. I have bought nimerous books over the years and have used different websites to continue to my thirst for knowledge in this subject. My favorite book so far is called "The Only Astrology Book You'll ever Need" by Joanne Wolfolk (Spelling might be off) and as much as that book has to offer, it still doesn't touch base on a lot of the things I'm trying to learn. It shows you how to read your chart by using Oprah Winfrey's chart as an example, but I need exact step by step instruction. Plus, I want to learn about House rulers, aspects, degrees, asteroids, different types of charts, different astrology terms, etc. My question is, where do I start? Google and astro.com are great but I still can't grasp a lot concepts.

Maybe try to get lessons?
Or buy another book, that covers basics.

It's funny you asked because I JUST discovered your post on House Rulers. It's complicated and I haven't finished reading everything, but I'm getting there. Is this the foundation of a chart?

Astrology comes in four pie charts:

1.) Transits charts-
always equals future dates and times. Your baby is due in 9 months. What might his / her natal chart look like 9 months from now if born at 1200 hrs. noon, Denmark?.

2.) Natal charts -
always equals the exact time in the present day. Your baby is born, 22 August 2014 at 0432 hrs., USA.

3.) Your Solar (Sun Cycle calendar) chart -
always equals, all of the Natal Aspects even those that the Natal chart never shows. (this chart is rarely used) (but the Sun Cycle calendar is super important).

4.) Synastry (Relationship) charts -
always equal the dates and time of the past. Your 18 year old baby wants to marry someone older than him. Are they compatible?

Reading the pie charts requires a long time in training and skill to read them. It is the most complete way to read the Natal chart. But, there is an easier and faster way to read transit and Synastry aspects with the use of a colorvision Synastry Aspecting chart. This is not a pie chart.

-------------------

An Overview of how astrology works;

A. Before you were born:

All of the planets were going around the Sun. And, of course we know that the Earth moves around the Sun on a yearly basis. But, in Astrology terms, it says that the Sun is moving around the Earth annually. So, we are going to say that the Sun is a planet for now. Anyway, the planets were moving, their positions in space was constantly changing before you were born. All of these planets in motion is called the Transiting planets. And the transiting planets will, sometimes, make aspects with each other.
.
.

B. On The Day You Were Born:

We take a still picture of the Transiting Planets. This is a freeze frame shot of the Sun and the Planets at your particular date, time and, place of birth. The picture is now called your Natal Chart. And it shows your Natal Planet Positions at the time of birth. (i.e. Sun in Leo 2 degrees and so on). However, keep in mind that the Transiting Planets have continued to move on.

Back to your Natal Planet positions, after the picture of the planets on your birth date have been taken, a calculation is made to see what aspects have been formed between your Natal Planets. (i.e. conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition are the primary aspects that we look for.) These aspects are known as your Natal Aspects. And like your Natal Planet positions, the Natal Aspects are stationary - once in place they never move. (The red and blue lines in your pie chart represent your Natal Aspects.)

Astrologers have assigned to all of the Natal Charts, all of the meanings associated with the planets: in the sign, in the houses and, with the aspects. (And this is the information that you have learned about your Natal Chart) But, what astrologers do not tell us, is that none of that information is true, yet.

Before any of the information about your Natal chart can come true, the Natal planets must first be activated (turned on) by the ever moving Transiting Planets. And this is done When the transiting planets begin to make aspect to your Natal Planets and or Natal Aspects. It is at this point when you will begin to feel the effects of the influences astrology is talking about. (i.e. You have (MY 90 NP), you may experience the influence only when the transiting Sun or planet makes a conjunction to either your Natal MY or Natal NP.)

Wonderful. NO, HR are not the basics of the charts. That would be the planets, houses and aspects but after this, you need HR to go to the next level.

Most people don't seem to make this transition and hence never get as good as they could imo

What kind of books have you been using? What areas of astrology do you want to focus on? If you're using "cookbooks" to figure out a chart, then that's part of the problem.

Scale back to the basics and learn them THOROUGHLY. Go DEEP. Start by really understanding each luminary and planet, each sign and each house. Don't just learn a few keywords for each but really immerse yourself in the symbolism until you "get it" so well that you no longer need a book or someone to tell you what (planet) in (sign) in (house) in (aspect) to ------------------ means. You should be able to blend and modify these as a chart requires before you go any further. If you try and rush on to the other stuff too soon, it just makes everything harder and more confusing! Not all planets/points carry equal weight from chart to chart and it's good to be able to understand how to "weight" them.

Once you really have down the basics, then you can start adding some minor aspects or asteroids. Those are just seasonings. They shouldn't be adding anything new or different. They shouldn't change anything but just add tiny details. Many professionals don't even bother with them; there's more than enough to cover with a client without those.

I'd suggest starting with just getting very comfortable reading a natal chart. Once you're good at that, synastry, transits, etc will go much more quickly since you'll already KNOW how all the possible manifestations of how a symbol can play out in a natal.

IMO, the biggest mistake in learning astrology is getting bogged down with too much detail.

If you want a good sight for exploring the deep symbolism of various planets, try this:
http://theinnerwheel.com/about-this-site/

Warning: This sight is not "beginner" stuff, but you've said you've already been studying for a while, so I think you'll find it a good one. Start by understanding what the Sun, Moon and Ascendant are that goes beyond "ego" or "feelings" or "mask".

You are still young, I'm 23 and I have studied astrology as a side-hobby since I was like 16, when I first discovered my full birth chart. I still don't know my exact birthdate by minute, but I have come pretty close. I think it takes a lifetime, or at least a full day job education to learn it all.
I still havn't got transits, but just be careful you get this right, cause if you misunderstand something it could completely confuse your life, and don't make astrology "control" your daily life with these transits. The day you really know about it to almost perfection you can begin to use it, but be careful, it's like playing with your own destiny, and we all need to keep the power to do spontaneous things in our life, that will lead us to new discoveries.

Yeah, I discovered the deeper aspects of Astrology when i was 10 years old and I still don't know anything really. I just wish there was a class that I could sign up for that would give me day to day instruction on Astrology instead me learning it basically on my own with the help of different forums and books.

This is my opinion if you really want to get good. Go into the Personal Readings Forum and do charts for people.

Give them what you know, if it is only Sun signs. Ask questions. Find out how it feels to get behind each sign, house and aspect, to the best of your ability.

There is no substitute for a pure jumping in to any endeavor.

I did charts in PR for over a year all day lol

It was a pure joy because people gave me a lot of love and appreciation.
