Truth is, whether or not something is 'doomed' is a matter of its own perspective. So let's look at the real underlying issue.

Why this? Why now? Why would two people go against their essential nature against crazy obstacles?

Synastry is great for answering such questions. But I'll do you one better, libran_dream; I'll throw in the Draco this time as well.

Progressions and transits can also be very useful. Mir has already offered excellent insight in terms of dual nVENUS conjunct pSUN, and pVENUS conjunct nSUN, and pVENUS conjunct nMARS (synastric) to answer the 'why now?' portion of the question. But it doesn't quite resolve the first part. Progressions, I feel, are the switch-flippers. But there's got to be a circuit in place ahead of time to generate current.

And this becomes my greater question. Why. Why, against normal sense and pragmatism. Why, when it seems almost compulsive in nature -- and such things are strictly verboten. Why, when the experience is nothing like it's 'supposed to be'. Why did it start, and why does it continue?

Perhaps this will be of interest or curiosity to some. Or it may be for the purpose of my own education, edification, and analysis.

In either case, here we go.

And if we examine the transit(Pluto on 11CAP now, finally, mercifully going direct - it's been squaring my Venus, I felt it, ouch), we can see:

A Study in Transiting Pluto
(this could use a more dramatic title, feel free to append one )

1. In his chart, opposite his Sun. tPluto opposite nSun will change so much in a person's life. This time ends a cycle between tPluto squaring his Sun in about 1976, to now, when it's opposite. So a chapter, an arc, is closed and completed in his life. The Sun-Pluto enmity, moving from square to opposition. You know what the lessons here are.
2. Also in his chart, we see that tPluto is moving toward making a T-square with his natal Moon-Mars opposition. This is going to be a clearing of sexual-emotional residue in his life on an apocalyptic scale. (dramatic, but why not ) Perhaps this relationship is his way of starting, and getting ready for, this long process.
3. In your chart, Pluto has just moved away from a Saturn square(during which time major karma would have been activated to clear) and is now in a solid Venus trine, just turned applying today, it seems to me. Moving from a Saturn square to a Venus trine is your task at hand. It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.
4. This tPluto is crossing your H4(so changing, deepening intimacy) and his H2(so deepening the sensual, demanding more emotional attention toward the physical). It might seem as a pursuit of questionable value to you both, as both those houses are empty. HOWEVER, while you may see your H4 being activated puzzling, since you don't use it too much, he sees it as valuable for you, since he does use his. And the same is true the other way - HIS H2 is empty, so he sees little value in it, but yours is active, so you do. Funny turnaround here.
5. In Draconic, we see tPluto opposite your dMoon/Uranus. A preeeety significant time for you to change your outlook on your feelings, and some thought patterns. Since Pluto never makes it easy for us, the process is long, drawn out and as painful as it can be. (I know it's controversial mixing transits and draconic. but I like it.)
6. tPluto is moving toward first opposing your dMars, then forming an opposition to his dVenus and a trine to his dMars, while also forming a square to your dVenus, at the same time. As they say, forewarned is forearmed. Arm yourself, *that* is looking to be a bumpy ride.
