Hi, everyone! I am so confused about how the outer planets affect personal planets in synastry and was hoping you all could weigh in on this topic. I have read on several websites and forums that the outer planets “direct” the relationship in synstry and the personal planet displays (or lives out) the characteristics of the outer planet when in aspect. I have tried to gain a clear understanding from other threads here but can’t really seem to find straight answers.

I am currently seeing someone with whom I seem to be the one “living out” both of the personal and outer planet aspects in many ways. Here are some examples:

We have Neptune opposite Venus: I am Neptune in this relationship but seem to be the one in a haze and overlooking the faults of the other person in favor of my ideal situation. Everything I have read indicates this should be the reverse, with Venus having the misperceptions.

Sun conjunction Pluto also features in our chart: I am the sun here and have this aspect in natal, so I thought I would be comfortable with the energies. However, I find I am exhibiting many of the “classic” behaviors I have read about with this aspect: I am the one with the obsessive control issues. I thought the Pluto person would be the one to feel this. We also have Pluto trine Venus wherein I am the Pluto, so I guess this could account for my feelings; however, I thought the trine was tame.

Uranus square Saturn is there as well, wherein I am the Uranus person. Everything I have read discusses how I will be the unreliable one in context to this relationship (e.g., broken dates, disappearing acts, etc). I have found the opposite to be true where I am the reliable one and they are flighty, change things last minute, etc. We also have Uranus square Mercury where I am, again, the Uranus person. In this case, I do exhibit the Uranus energies: I find this person to be superficial in many ways, traditional, and limited in scope (i.e., kind of boring).

I guess what has me so confused is that the outer planet effects seem to be very selective. My personal planets display the behaviors of the outer planets in some cases but not in others. Is there something I am missing here?

I think it goes both ways... at least I've heard many people say that. I don't know if they are just confused of the signs they give/give off, but it seems that some outer-plant aspect goes both way.
It's more obvious with saturn though... it's always the "saturn person" who is the strict one, the one who is in control of their feelings for the other, just showing tiny controlled bits of them....

Anyways, another thing is that you should not give uranus square saturn that much attention, because it's a generational aspect.

The only thing I really know about outer planets in synastry is, that they got each their themes. Neptune is about deception, idealising the partner, dreams and fantasies about something that is not what it seems(or IS exactly what it seems), jupiter is about happiness, making things grow, supporting each other(and often jupiter is very good in any synastry), Saturn is about coldness, being strict, lessons to learn but also very binding energy. Uranus is about finding a way to get along that is not ordinary, because uranus craves something out of the norm... Pluto is about powerstruggles in it's pure form.

I guess it goes both way, but check your house overlays and the rest of your synastry, maybe there is something you are missing?

Thank you for your input, next to neptune! It sounds like the outer planet theme viewpoint is a better approach to interpretations. (I’m still newish to astrology and learning about how the aspects work, etc.) I like the idea of recognizing the outer planets’ energies or effects and applying them to the couple, instead of dividing it between the two individuals somehow.

I’ve reviewed our synastry aspects and composite but nothing stands out to me in regard to how I would be affected in some instances and not others. I only have two aspects in natal which we have in synastry: Sun conjunct Pluto and Sun opposite Ascendant. I posted our charts in another thread a while ago: http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum35/HTML/001668.html. Not sure if there’s anything there which is helpful, though.

I agree it can go either way, where Neptune idealizes Venus.

"Sun conjunction Pluto also features in our chart: I am the sun here and have this aspect in natal, so I thought I would be comfortable with the energies. We also have Pluto trine Venus wherein I am the Pluto, so I guess this could account for my feelings; however, I thought the trine was tame."

From my own recent experience as the Sun in a Sun-Pluto aspect in synastry (I also have a natal Sun-Pluto conjunction), Sun is hypnotized by Pluto, Pluto holds the power. I've seen a lot of Sun-Pluto contacts on this forum, so others may have a different experience.

With you being Pluto in the Venus-Pluto contact, that would account for your feelings, but a Venus-Pluto trine, especially if its tight, is still powerful, as your own experience tells you.

"Uranus square Saturn is there as well, wherein I am the Uranus person. Everything I have read discusses how I will be the unreliable one in context to this relationship (e.g., broken dates, disappearing acts, etc). I think his unreliability is attributable to other factors, either in his natal chart or the synastry. Regarding the Uranus/Saturn and Uranus/Mercury, Uranus tends to see Saturn as too conservative and traditional. (I've had this dynamic with an ex, but it wasn't a problem because of other aspects in the synastry). Depending on the other person's chart, Uranus on their Mercury and Saturn may feel disruptive and uncomfortable, or it can be exciting as well as challenging. The interaspects to the Moons would reveal more about levels of comfort.
