I've read some not so nice things about this transit and its coming up for me in a few weeks. Safe to say I'm a little concerned lol.
What are people's experiences with this transit?
Is some sort of clash with a lover most probable?
And is there any way I can work to negate these influences?

it depends on how you are managing your mars energy and also the aspect that the DC has in natal... if you have being manage your assertivity and initiative, the you are not going to project that outside. otherwise you may find conflicts everywhere with SO or with open enemies. which aspects do you have to your DC? do you have any planet there? I have today (exact) mars conjunct my AC. actually it was a good day. I feel invigorated and went cycling and enjoyed myself a lot.. I also felt that something is changing for the better.

sounds wonderful how you have been influenced by the asc conjunction! I hope to do the same with my DSC. By the way are you Scandinavian?
This year I'm being faced with the challenge of finding my mars and asserting it in a healthy way. My DSC is conjunct my chiron and opposite uranus. this is my chart:

Hi!
Oh..how was it in the end? I see you also have as me Uranus close to ascendant. I am experiencing this transit now..since August because mars was retrograde, now in 6th house. My descendant is also conjunct north node und vesta..I do not know.. I just having lot of hard time and pressure, but I am going through a very busy time since 2020..so i do not know anymore. I managed already quite good to work on my issues of anger or so..so my hope is that I do not meet any aggressive behaviour.. but I have noticed lot of external complication and small accident.

Hey there! My boyfriend had mars in descendant transit and we deff had a lot of conflict. I'm also going through Uranus transit my ascendant and his Uranus is about to hit his descendant and it definitely shakes things up! I'll just caution to keep calm even if you feel like you want war during that transit! I'm sure it's not bad for everyone but I generally don't enjoy mars transit 7th house or synastry/composite with it
