Stargazing might be symbolic, yes, however the zodiac was never really tied to the constellations; if it had been the areas for the signs in the zodiac would have to reflect the different size of the constellations as well.

it seems to have started with the fixed star axis of Antares and Aldebaran as axis of reference, back then (15 Scorpio-Taurus).

HOwever when the zodiac developed as a circle, it had always been just a construct to measure angular distances. It was called after constellations, that is true, probably because they were roughly near to the positions in the measuring circle and thus it was easier to visualize or to rember, but the zodiac has always been an independent tool of measurement and is more closely tied to the seasons on earth (Northern hemisphere) than to the actual constellations in the sky.

but putting that aside, the concept of le chart seems too farfetched for me as well.

Good point, Ceri it's been half symbolical, half astronomical from the beginning. And astrology is roughly based on the astronomical science of a long time ago (which was of course, rather incipient; although a huge spiritual, scientific step when humans began to measure and navigate based on the stars)
