You may also want to check the Progressed Composite for any clues as to why the sudden change. Was the Moon changing Signs or aspecting a notorious planet? Were the Angles moving to Critical Degrees? And what aspects are being made generally?

Sometimes when things don't show in the synastry or natal charts -- and I think the Uranus action on your natal may have contributed to this situation -- it's always good to peek at the progressed Composite to see if there's something there.
