One of my many LOLs is writing on my fiction novel. Only problem is I only wanna write when I'm at work. When I'm home and have time, I just can't seem to think of anything. Anyone else have a problem like this?IP: Logged |

OMG YES!! That happens to me soo often, hereisgone I can totally relate - why is that???I ned to find me a creative job so that I can incorporate writing in it, then it will blend superbly.. hopefully! I think 'I must remember that' or 'I must write that down later..' and am blank later! So aggrevating. IP: Logged |

Because creativity is like gossamer in the wind. One must combine it with discipline. Carry a notebook dedicated to your creative efforts with you at all times. Use it. Scribble in it while waiting on friends. In the movie theatre. Whenever you need to. I prefer a small-ish artist notebook (no lines!) which fits into my large-ish purse. Commit to yourself and your project. Dedicate a time-frame, write yourself a contract and mail copies to friends/family. For the first draft of my first novel, I woke at 4 a.m. every day, six days a week, to write for two hours before getting ready for work. You cannot simply wait for the Muse. You must beseech and encourage her to come to you. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Hi hereisgone,You must get this book - highly, highly recommended - The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. It has been recommended to me over and over throughout the years and I finally picked it up. I havent read it yet, but it seems great and from what I've read, it has helped thousands of artists out of their funks and blocks. It helps writers, visual arists.....artists of all kinds. Hopefully it will help me become more motivated and not so judgemental and critical of my own artwork. (Virgo moon perfectionism. ) Sheaa and Trill, you might enjoy it as well. And flipping through the book she has an excercise that requires you to write every morning....about anything or nothing at all, any random thoughts....for an hour daily, w/o judging what comes out. So, good advice Trillian, with carrying a notebook at all times. Good Luck all.

The same thing happens to me. I get struck with inspiration when I'm driving. I'm brilliant behind the wheel! LOL. But put a blank sheet in front of me and... well, you know the rest. I also get a lot of ideas while I'm at work and I usually grab paper and jot down my ideas. Problem is I have accumulated a decent collection of ideas, but few completed projects.Trillian is right about discipline. The creative part is the fun part and we forget that we have to work, too! BTW, Trillian, is your novel published? I would love to read your writing. Maybe we should do something casual like a book club, but a writing club... maybe once a month be sure to post something in "Yellow Wax." Just an idea... IP: Logged |

future_uncertain, thank you for asking. Alas, my first novel is not yet published. It's a daunting process...but while they've waivered, I have not lost hope or determination. While I continue to search for a publisher and/or agent, I have begun to brainstorm my second novel. 26T Thanks for the recommendation...I'll try to look up the book after the New Year, when life quiets down a bit. BTW, I read a bit of advice a while ago that I will share with you. Before you sit down for a writing session, be sure your refrigerator is clean. Writers will look for any excuse to not write, including cleaning the fridge. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the advice, everyone.Trillian - If I may ask, what is your novel about? I don't think there will be a second for me. Maybe a collection of short stories; that seems to be best for my short attention span. The one I'm working on now originally was meant to be a fan fiction story when I was about 18. Then it spun out of control into about 6 chapters; that's when I began to think about having it published. So I had to rewrite names, change some things, etc. I don't even associate it with the original because it's deviated so far from it. My absolute dream though is for it to be published, then turned into a movie. Wishful thinking, I know. lol! IP: Logged |

Yeah!! I get my best ideas when I wake up like in the middle of the night from a dream or something or just from now being able to sleep. Then I go back to sleep and forget my ideas......I just need to sit down and write one day and go from there.------------------ Jen MT student www.mtacc.net IP: Logged |

I often get my best ideas/urges to write in the shower. My mind just goes off into this uninterrupted stream of thoughts but, by the time I get out of the shower, I can't recall much of it. It's really rather messy to try to write in the shower, too. I've been thinking of just setting a tape recorder in the bathroom with me and dictating to myself, hehe. Who knows, it might work. ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

You could do like Kramer on an episode of Seinfeld and live in the shower (and then write a novel). He installed a garbage disposal in the tub, so he could prepare meals there. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." You're so right Trillian quote: You cannot simply wait for the Muse. You must beseech and encourage her to come to you
My waiting time is up. I have a shiney new pad (no lines ) for christmas and intend to use it everywhere, instead of leaving it at home like the other ones! Magic & Organisation is the key ~ Mary Poppins'ing my life a little! 26, thank you for the Julia Cameron info Indeed ~ I do need to write a little a day, I tend to wait for the emotion - sometimes wish I had a Virgo moon instead of the Cancer one Thank you guys, you're my rock sometimes. You helped me by writing this hereisgone, I wouldn't have addressed it this soon ------------------ "If something is attained, it was already there from the beginning." Keep us posted, Sheaa. I know you will do well.hereisgone...my novel would come under the heading 'chick lit,' though friends who have read it would disagree, as it has a bit more bite than most chick lit. At heart, the book is a romance, or two, gone bad. Still have a little work to do on it (heck, it will never be done till it's in print!), and will start my 2nd novel in January.

Awww, thank you so much for the encouragement. It is so very much appreciated. I have my moments of self-doubt, ya know. Navia: WHY, YES, YES I AM! Looking for an agent or publisher, that is. Know anyone? (She asked hopefully!) I plan to write to publishers directly in the coming weeks. It's a process that burns me out a bit...I had one agent tell me he loved it, but wasn't in love with it. Whatever that means. IP: Logged |

Whoa! I can't believe I keep passing by this thread without reading it. I love to write!! An empty notebook excites me so much...I don't really write fictional stories, I tend to write reviews, research essays and other sorts of essays/articles. And tonnnnss of journaling, I have around 20 full notebooks beginning in 1997. *sends magic writing energy too!* ok so it's really my excitement over writing that I hope oozes to you! IP: Logged |
