December 8th is also the Festival of lights to pay homage to Virgin Mary. However it's held in France, it's a point of interest if nothing else;

quote:
Every December 8th, the people of Lyon place little candle lamps in their windows, in homage of the Virgin Mary. These illuminations are part of a long-lived tradition in the city and the festival created around the event attracts thousands of visitors every year.

This tradition originated nearly 150 years ago. On December 8th, 1852, the statue of the Virgin Mary, erected on Fourvière hill, was to be inaugurated. This was to be an important moment for the city's faithful, for the event had already been postponed due to flooding of the Saône river. It was originally scheduled to take place September 8th, in celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin and anniversary of a pledge made by local magistrates in 1643. But, on this December evening, with preparations for the Festival underway and the leading citizens of Lyon lighting up their homes, as was traditionally done for important celebrations, a terrible storm broke out over Lyon and threatened the inauguration ceremony once again. Fortunately, the storm passed quickly and the people, who had been waiting so long for this event, spontaneously lit their homes and came out in the streets to celebrate. The people of Lyon continue the custom to this day.

December 8th is also The Feast of the Immaculate Conception
A Roman Catholic Holy Day of Obligation - here's a link; http://www.aloha.net/~mikesch/immac.htm

However, Linda was 'a shoot from the sturdy branch of the Church of England' (or similar to the quote) was she not.. or was that a past life reference in Gooberz?

Also.. interestingly, it was the date when some one saw a black spot on the sun

SPOTS IN THE SUN

quote:
December 8, 1590, at sunset, James Welsh of the ship Richard of Arundel, sailing off the coast of Guinea, observed a great black spot on the sun, and found the same appearance visible next morning.—Halcluyt's Voyages, ii. 618. Similar phenomena had been observed on several previous occasions. They did not, however, become a subject for scientific remark till about 1611.

'When viewed with a telescope and coloured glasses, the sun is observed to have large black spots upon it, surrounded with a band or border less completely dark, called a penumbra. This penumbra is partially luminous, and terminated by distinct edges, presenting no apparent gradations of luminosity: it is mostly of a shape nearly corresponcluig to that of the spot it surrounds, but occasionally occupying a considerable space, and including several spots. Though the sun's radiant disc is sometimes clear, it very frequently, indeed generally, exhibits these maculae; they are of various magnitudes—some of them I have myself found, by careful measurement, to be several times larger than the earth. These solar spots are usually confined within 35° of his equator, and in a zone parallel; but I have often seen them much nearer to the polar regions The extreme difficulty of watching such changes with the telescope, in the sun's brilliant glare, is a very serious obstacle to minute scrutiny. Nor is it wholly without danger; the illustrious Sir William Herschel lost an eye in this service; and I myself had a narrow escape from a similar disaster, by neglecting to reduce the aperture of the instrument.'

As to the spots:

'From their generally preserving the same position inter se, and continuing visible during equal times, it is held that they are component parts of the sun's solid body, seen through vast accidental openings in the luminous substance which encompasses that immense orb. Hence the variability of the maculae, which in some cases are seen to contract, dilate, and disappear, at short intervals, in a manner only compatible with the atmospheric or gaseous state of matter.'

The sun is thus to be 'regarded as a black solid nucleus, surrounded by two atmospheres, the one obscure, the other luminous. In the instance of a spot, the penumbra is the extremity of the inner and dark atmosphere, a fissure exposing the bare nucleus, but not so wide as that in the outer luminous medium above.'—Smythe's Cycle of Celestial Objects, i. 89.

The ingenious Mr. James Nasmyth, in 1860, made an interesting addition to our knowledge of the surface of the sun. He discovered that the luminous envelope is composed of masses of bright matter, of the shape of willow-leaves. They become particularly distinct in this form, in the narrow straits of luminous matter which are often seen crossing through the dark macula.

Also, I found this in the lexi forum; http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000009.html

I'm unsure if it's been mentioned here before, but does anyone know what the Hour of Grace was exactly?

Do you think that that date has significance due to her daughter’s disappearance on Dec. 10th? I believe in the beginning of Sun Signs she writes a letter to her daughter, and mentions seeing her a couple days before her disappearance. Does anyone know more about this? I was truly saddened when I read of that loss? It’s hard for me to re-read all of the posts that have been made, so I hope I don’t force you all to repeat anything too much!

P.S. I should acknowledge that I have enjoyed all your posts, and am truly enlightened to find such a stunning group of elves!

Welcome! Yes, I have also thought that. Maybe she and Linda had an argument on that day.

It's an Isis and Osiris connection that involves the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the white cross on the hill as mentioned in Gooberz. And a tiny little street called Pilgrimage Place...

I am contemplating writing the entire, mad, beautiful Linda story and posting it on my website, I just have to think it over a little bit more. It could open up a major can of proverbial worms, but then again, Linda may have liked that.

Kathleen, I am a Sun, Mercury and Venus in Aries. And I say: Oh yes, Worms Please.

On rainy sidewalks I dodge the worms, and sometimes I place them safely back in the dirt. But that's because I like worms.

A can of worms that represent the truth...is a mighty fine thing.

Greetings...

I've been a member of Kathleen's site for some time now, also, and I just found out that she had shared this on Fri Dec 8, 2006 8:47 am:

quote:

Those of you who have been with me for a long time are well aware
that this is an important day for me, and one that I celebrate very
specifically.

For those who are new, here is a brief recap.

On the Christian calendar, today is the feast day of the Immaculate
Conception, but it stems from a much more ancient feast day - the
Egyptian feast of the Healing of Osiris. December 8th corresponds
to the date that Isis "re-membered" Osiris - put him back together
after searching for him around the world in the ultimate act of love
and devotion. It was on this day that the god Horus was conceived,
as a gift to Isis for her extraordinary act. While Osiris could not
be resurrected on the physical plane, he was able to pass his
essence along through his beloved to create a perfect child who
would be a symbol of light for the future...

It is a day sacred to the power of love, a day to celebrate if you
are fortunate to have found your soulmate, or a day to search and
reaffirm that you are ready to find your soulmate if you have not.

I perform a ceremony in Hollywood every year on this day, to
commemorate the teachings of Linda Goodman, who first told me this
story in a most memorable five hour phone conversation in 1993.
Those of you who are Linda fans know this already, so I will hold
you all in my prayers as I set off to the white cross on the hill
that she loved so much...

Yours in the power of LOVE, which as John said, is ALL YOU NEED.
(And yes, I am aware that today is the anniversary of that terrible
night when we lost our great Libra-Osiris poet).

x0 - K
