The whole world seemed crowed in to render homage to a scheme that God could only bless and make use of himself. Old distinctions and inhibitions were dissolved: the Cross faced down the Crescent, the West had come to the Orient never to leave it (until, in July 1956, Gamal Abdel Nasser would activate Egypt’s taking over the canal by pronouncing the name of de Lesseps).

PIcturing in his mind the chubby tavern owners, the perspiring merchants, the dapper sailors and the ham-fisted smithies tripping over their weapons and each other, following orders that were never given, not following those that were, Tanis could have wept from sheer frustration.

"My, you're disapproving!" She laughted. "Of course being as prurient as the next creatur I always wondered what the Philosophy Club had turned out to be like. You know, in another life I'd like to see them all again. And Glinda, dear Glinda. And even nasty Aravic. What of him?"

The trouble was, that kind of junk is sort of fascinating to watch, even if you don't want it to be. For instance, that girl that was getting water squirted all over her face, she was pretty good looking. I mean that's my big trouble. In my mind, I'm probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw. Sometimes I can think of very crumby stuff I wouldn't mind doing if the opportunity came up.

I remember well, for instance, the blind animal terror which ensued when some townie set off the civil defense sirens as a joke. Someone said it was a nuclear attack; TV and radio reception, never good there in the mountains, happened to be particularly bad that night, and in the ensuing stampede for the telephones the switchboard shorted out, plunging the school into a violent and almost unimaginable panic. Cars collided in the parking lot. People screamed, wept, gave away their possessions, huddled in small groups for comfort and warmth. Some hippies barricaded themselves in the Science Building, in the lone bomb shelter, and refused to let anyone in who didn't know the words to "Sugar Magnolia." Factions formed, leaders rose from the chaos. Though the world, in fact, was not destroyed, everyone had a marvelous time and people spoke fondly of the events years afterward.

If you peer into someone else's eyes, stare at the space beyond their pupils, all you see is darkness an oily blackness. The color I've imagined of the darkness inside each of us.

Looking out or peering in, eyes are not windows. But there is darkness.

We are full of windows. We are full of darkness.

The air tonight smells of scorpions and screech owls. I close my eyes tightly, the darkness intensifies only slightly. Blood rushes in my ears, my mouth fills with saliva. I open my eyes, the light burns only a little more brightly.

My life, she struggled to understand. And she remembered that in the afternoon in the warm forest when she had been walking before his horse, she had felt her own long hair on her buttocks, brushing htem as she walked ahead of him, and she had wondered if she looked beautiful to him, and she had wished that he would pick her up then, and kiss her and caress her. Of course she had not dared to look back. She couldn't imagine what he woul dhave done had she been so foolish as to do that, but the sun had thrown their shadows ahead of them and she had seen the shadow of his profile, and felt such a pleasure that she was ashamed of it, and her legs had felt weak and there had been the oddest feeling in her, something she had never known in her earlier life, though perhaps in her dreams.

"But would you have done any other studies, arithmetic for example?"

"Yes."

It was not an admission that sensible people made in the Rochestrian Commonwealth in the September of 1729 GW. Even Dragon Librarians were known to be abducted, stripped, dressed in other clothing, and then sold on the black market as calculor components. The mistakes were eventually discovered, of course, but by then the criminals involved had taken their gold and vanished.

Notice the arrow of evolution, on the right side of the diagram. It points toward the absolute. This implies that all matter in the universe, starting with the atom, is moving up in levels of consciousness under the forces of evolution until it finally reaches the absolute. It also means that matter is combining and becoming more and more complex forming more intricate nervous systems as time goes by, and these nervous systems are capable of interacting with nature in more complex patterns. In other words, the quality of their consciousness is increasing.

"The greatest good?" White began to move away. "It's your own reality, Michael. And you, as a human vibrating with a new intensity, will create it for yourself. There isn't one entity in the Universe that can do it for you." White had moved to the door.

Mike understood that he had shifted into a discussion that would go no further. These were the questions that the angels would not -- or could not -- answer. He tried one more tactic.

"White will I be able to discern what is the highest good for all?"
