I just arrived home. I live along a relatively busy country road, where there are a few houses here and there, otherwise it's woods.

There was a dog along the side of the road, walking. He looked at me as I drove past. Medium size, brownish hair, collie mix maybe.
There are a few homes, he could belong to one, but he seemed...alone.

I drove back a couple of times, he stays along the side of the road and looks at the cars as they go by.

I am ashamed to say I was afraid to stop. It's very dark, not like a neighborhood at all. Usually I have to watch for deer.
I don't know if he is dangerous or not--my inclination is that he is not...but...but...

The road itself is a dangerous place to stop, but really I feel unsure about the dog, though I also think I should just be brave enough...If it were daylight I probably wouldn't even hesitate.

I feel so guilty. I may go drive by again and see if he is still out. I tried to call the one friend who lives close enough that he might have been able to come help me, but he was not home.

Say a prayer for the dog...

Thank you VAA...I just went back and drove by the same area twice and he was no longer around...so I fervently pray that he belonged to one of the homes.

I may look for him tomorrow.

Thank you for all the well-wishes for the dog. I don't know any more than I did last night. I stopped by a couple of the nearest homes twice, and no one was home.

Pixie, thank you for the nice thought, but I think a real angel would have stopped. I've rationalized it a few ways---there really was no safe place near him to pull over on a dark, moonless night, that wouldn't have compromised both him and me, and other drivers. Especially if he had been a skittish dog...we could have caused an accident. But it doesn't do much to assuage my guilt.

I hope he's ok, thank you for your support.

Nephthys, just in case you didn't know, I've posted many times in Heathcliffe's Corner.

Hey Trillian, I know how you must feel. Don't sweat it honey, it's the best you could do at the time.

Your good thoughts and extending love, is beautiful

I often think about all the animals I would love to help, or that are being mistreated and it drives me nuts sometimes.

With love,
Sheaa

I agree with Sheaa, you did the best you could at the time. I would have done the same.
