I'm sooo sad... I used to know myself, until I had to enroll my son into the school system... that doesn't work for him! Just a conversation will help! Is anyone out there?

Philbird -

I didn't realize you were so sad. Sorry for making light of your drunken stupor the other day...

For some reason, it seems everyone is going through a paradigm shift, each based on our current situations. I know right now Saturn's doing this to me right now

And events in the last few days has me reeling and asking life's important questions all over again. The routines I was used to are completely irrelevant and useless now.

School's suck, and most of them always have. "The system" sucks the big one and it's time to get creative. Try researching on the Net or at the bookstore for creative approaches to learning and teaching. Perhaps it will spark some inspiration in you, or even give you an Ah!Ha! moment.

Here's something to hopefully make you laugh :::

Hey Philbird!!

How ya doin today?? Look I saw the sadness calling and knew that this would sort you out for at least 30 mins; www.stupid.com

Oh yeah.. it produces such material as thus.. look hither;

quote:
Brace yourself for some major stupidiosity...

A guy is driving down a road and sees a sign that says "Watch for Fallen Rocks." A few miles later, he sees some rocks at the side of the road, so he stops and picks some up.

When he gets to the next town, he takes the carries the rocks into the Highway Maintenance office. He walks up to the counter and puts the rocks on it. He looks at the guy behind the counter and says "Here's your fallen rocks... now where's my watch?"

See what I'm saying.. yeah ya love it *giggles* {{{big hug}}}

Hey guys.
I was so stressed last week! I have been keeping on Jay about math homework, sending papers back to the teacher with corrections to problems that were marked incorrect by other students and checked by the teacher. She gave me all of his grades and when I added up the percentile, it totaled almost 80% instead of her 73%! Going from an F to a B is a great accomplishment for Jay, I had to fight for him to even have that satisfaction! I am pi**ed! I had him go to tutoring, only to find out the teacher doesn't help unless the kid asks for it. My son doesn't know when he is doing his work incorrectly! So, he doesn't ask for help. They have no English, S.S., Health, or Science books, so Jay has to remember everything! I can't help him. His math teacher wrote me a note on Jay's progress.. and it was littered with poor grammar and sentance structure, and missing words!

The ADHD has been a struggle all his life, and now that I have the time to really help him, He's being cheated by the school system.
I changed his diet, helped him to get organized, spend hours doing homework that may or may not be collected according to the teacher's class load. Gia, would I just purchase Stephen Lewis's book to get info on AIM?
Thank you everyone for your support.
To boot, I had him re-evaluated to see If he would need meds (I made the appointment before I changed his diet) given a little more time to see if the change was all he needed, the clinician mentioned some signs of OCD. Very mild, more compulsive than obsessive. I knew he had some bad habits, but just thought it was anxiety.

Philly,

I spoke to my friend Lea who works with Stephen Lewis. She says that you can call her and she'll explain about AIM and send you details. Her number are:

Toll free : 877 - 924 3533
Not toll free - 415 720 4722

Please call her and tell her that I sent you. I still think you should read the book, if only so you can truly understand how this works. I will happily send you one Philly if you email me your address.

Thank You Everyone! Really!
Gia, I printed out that imformation. The also claimed they have a web site set up for the parents so they can see what the students are learning, and look at grades. This was in the begining of the year. I looked up the address and it's a government site, having nothing to do with the school, or school period! And I had to purchase my son's Math book on line because the one he brought home from school was so vulgar, and falling apart!

My therapist knows the principle personally and is going to get together with her and bring up these issues in a descreet manner, so I won't have to point fingers and Jay won't be associated directly with any action that may be taken.
Astro-junkie... believe me, I'd rather slap a few people than sue them.
Anyway, I'll close this issue for now, because I could go on and on!

Subject open again!!! I was sent an IEP by the school. I had requested one after his first marking period, he wasn't doing so hot. Well, he has brought up all of his grades considerably and yesterday I get an IEP to improve his english grade. The form was already filled out as a generic form for any student in the program. So the zerox said "student will improve standard scores in English by (fill in the blank)." Jay's said 2 points. The same day I get a progress report from his English teacher stating he is getting an A in english. My initial request was for Math! That's it, I'm seeing the principal today!
By the way, Jay's grade for English last quarter was really a B! So, here I am debating whether or not to put my son on medication for not being able to focus in school, and his grades were actually 2 B's and a C!

Oh, I forgot...
Yesterday Jay showed his Math teacher the "proper" way to subtract algebra problems, as opposed to her "invisible Kevin" theory! HA!
She said "Not everyone is smart enough to do the problems in their heads"
I asked him what the "F" was invisible Kevin? He said, I never heard of it.

My grades were never straight A's. What the F? So you son probably daydreams like me. Probably is an independent thinker, and quite creative.

I don't recognize my country anymore.

Can you imagine how they could have pegged Einstein these days?

Yeah, he daydreams and doodles, just like I did. I turned out to be an artist. There is no art program in his school. Anyway, I know he's not daydreaming about "Invisible Kevin."
Geez. This school system is all about meeting state standards, not the students education. He told me today he doesn't have gym any more because the teacher quit. So they had an extra Math period instead. It can't get any worse. Like I said, I'm going to raise a little hell tonight!
Thanks for everyone's support.

Phil -

I would find a better school for him. Even if I had to move. That school sucks the big one. You're dealing with a beauracracy, right? It could take YEARS for them to implement changes.

Parent/teacher conference over. Two high "C"'s a "B", a pass, and a fail. What can I say, yes, it's a ***** . Jay is only living with me till the end of the school year, so any major changes at this point would be fruitless. I'm going to let up as long as he gets "C"'s. He got marked absent because he didn't hear his name over the other kids, then had to write 250 times "I will not talk in class." I'm not going to fight the system anymore, Jay knows who he is and what the important things in life are. He doesn't need a grade to tell him that. His ENGLISH teacher told me he probably wasn't doing as well because he was a minority! Good grief. (everyone else here is Mexican/American, or Mexican.) Where is that banging the head on desk icon...

astro junkie...
Where are you getting your smilies? I don't recall seeing that one! But, yes, a brick wall. Thanks for making my day!
Oh, and I found out who invisible Kevin was.
Kevin Bacon from the movie Hollow Man. Apparently you are supposed to write numbers you can't see for the math equations. Like everyone on earth has seen Hollow Man. Rated R might I add.
