I couldn't think of anywhere else to post this question, and it kind of applies to a lot of discussions I see on these boards, so I figure SOMEONE here has to be into philosophy...anyway a friend of mine and I got into a big discussion about human existence, and reminded me that I wanted to see if I could find information on multiple selves. Not in the sense of multiple personality disorder (dissociative identity disorder), but how your "self" isn't really one self, but a collection of semi-fractured selves, different parts of you that you use every day in different places and with different people. My own experiences made me start to wonder about this...I have a hard time feeling totally integrated into one whole functioning self. There's the me who goes jobhunting and is very professional, then there's the me that lets lose at music shows, the fractured me who comes home and tries to not deal with the bullcrap in the house...I always get frustrated because I wish I could put these selves together.

Anyway, I have NO experience with philosophy, and I think this would be the way to get myself into it. Are there any philosophers who have pondered the existence of the selves that have to play roles? How you have to fracture yourself up, hide parts of yourself when you are dealing with others? I'm so interested in this, and I spend the past half hour trying to search Google with no luck.

Hey VTT. This is such synchronicity. I was having this very discussion with a friend the other day. I wonder what makes you think that this isnt the way we are meant to be?

I had this convo with a friend last summer. She's a psych major and she sees these different "personalities" as layers that a fully functioning human being integrates into a whole. I tend to see them as facets... all different sides of a whole. I have often wondered if I am supposed to integrate all of these sides of myself into one constant self. I think some people do and some people don't. I decided that it would be too boring for me! So maybe I'm only semi-functional... but loving it!

BTW, VTT... is that really the name of the city you live in, or is that a typo? I've been curious!

It isn't so much that I think humans in general shouldn't be like this...it's just something that has bothered me a ton with myself. I think it is because in certain roles I have just felt so...unreal? I could always just blame the selves on the mutability of my Sun Sign :P. Plus I think with my long-term studying of psychology, which basically makes anything in excess a "bad" thing, has seemed to imply that one whole self is healthy. I just feel general discomfort with not being one whole self all of the time.

future_uncertain, I LOVE what your friend said! It makes a lot of sense to me...the layers as a fully functioning human being integrating into a whole. Yes! I was wondering if I am supposed to integrate them as well, but I think that could be harmful...certain sides of me I use in certain situations could cause negative responses in other situations. Hmm...wheels are turning in my head!

Haha, that's neither the name of my city or a typo, it's really "fort" ann, but I lovingly refer to it as fart ann. Also with the accents some people have here, it really does sound like they're saying "fart ann". Very strange!

What an interesting topic.

I dont think we should be "trying" to integrate all of our 'selves' into one whole. I think we can all agree that there are many sides and aspects - personalities even - to ourselves. I think this is natural and healthy. I also think that the "wholness" of them all, just happen natually actually. The wholness is already there but we may feel as if it is not because the different aspect of self may be unbalanced at the time. Or we are being/relying on one personality of ourself more than another at certain times in our lives. It's when you discover a new aspect of yourelf that you may not be used to that you might feel uncomfortable with it or "in pieces". Newness can sometimes make one feel out of control.

Discovery of Self can be scary and at other times uplifting and exciting. I think it's about striking a balance with the parts of you that you feel to be the most true to your inner self. Time also must be spent dealing with your own "demons" but I find this to be the most transforming thing someone can do for themself. By not pushing the bad parts away or getting trapped in victim mode one can really grow the most from knowing and transforming the negative and most painful aspects of themself. Any negative thing is just positivity inside out. It can be transformed. But this can only be done with an honest and open mind and most importantly love and forgivness. That is when you shed your skin, grow into a better being. Through honest looking within and loving and forgiving yourself.

I think I went off track. But those are my thoughts.

"My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love. When Christ said that man does not live by bread alone, he spoke of a hunger. This hunger was not the hunger of the body. It was not the hunger for bread. He spoke of a hunger that begins deep down in the very depths of our being. He spoke of a need as vital as breath. He spoke of our hunger for love.
Love is something you and i must have. We must have it because our spirit feeds upon it. We must have it because without it we become weak and faint. Without love our self-esteem weakens. Without it our courage fails. Without love we can no longer look out confidently at the world. We turn inward and begin to feed upon our own personalities, and little by little we destroy ourselves.
With it we are creative. With it we march tirelessly. With it, and with it alone, we are able to sacrifice for others."

Awwww, VTT... I was hoping you'd agree with ME! lol. My friend and I got into a huge debate about this and we both felt so passionately about our views that we called it a night shortly thereafter.

Thanks for the explanation on your hometown! I think it's funny! I still laugh about pix's picture of that sign: Put more in your fart, or less! Still cracking me up!
