I wasn't in the Peace Corps, but had made plans to be (it was what I was going to do to before my Pluto transit hit ) and so've done quite a bit of research on it and talked w/ a number of people who did serve.

You should be able to go to www.peacecorps.gov and request an information packet. It's pretty detailed, if obviously biased.

Are you in college right now or do you already have your B.A./B.S.?
One of those is a requirement for serving...well, either that or you'll have had to have grown up on a working farm, be a computer genius, or something.

Hm, some other little factoids:

* You can only serve in a Latin American country if you already know Spanish.
Once there, you'll be expected to have working knowledge of that as you're taught an indiginous language or two.

* You generally spend the first part of your service being immersed in a language in culture w/ a host family (usually in the capital or a bigger city in the country), taking classes in that language, and taking classes in the subject area that you're there for. You then go to your service area.
You'll only get a bike if you're medical or construction and have to travel from town to town a lot.

* The service requirement is 2 years, although you can extend that if you like.

Er, yeah.
If you have any specific questions, I may be able to dredge them up from memories of my convos w/ people.

Hey BR - Have you been to the Peace Corp reps office in the international center across from center hall? They can give you all the info there. You should also get on the pc mailing list, because they have lots of info sessions around town. I went to one at SDSU, and there were actually a handful of people who had been in the program there to talk to us.
