Hey ya'll -

I was wondering about ya'll's favorite charities to which you donate time and/or money.

The absolute top with me's The Nature Conservancy. It just seems like such a highly effective and pragmatic system for saving the "last great places" on Earth, and it garnered a four star rating from CharityNavigator.org .
When I have some extra cash burning a hole in my pocket, I try to steer it their way.

When I have time (though I haven't yet done it here in 'Bama), I'll contribute time and work to Habitat for Humanity. Again, it seems like an effective, on-the-ground way to really help out families; a plus with me is that it's not so much a chairty as an aid program - it seeks to empower those it helps by making prospective homeowners a part of the process. They're not given the homes, they work and put "sweat equity" into the building of the structures (which are built otherwise mostly by volunteers and using discounted or donated materials to keep the cost down) and are then sold the homes - at no profit - with the help of no-interest loans.
While I'm not Christian (it's an ecumenical Christian organization), I find that its overall goals mesh with my ideals.

Sooo, what floats your boat?

I don't donate to most 'charitable' causes because too large a percentage is used for administrative costs. Sometimes 50% or more!

I also don't believe any of the recognized organizations are really trying to find cures for MS, Cancer, etc. Too many people would be out of jobs.

prox, I agree about Habitat for Humanity, but I can't get past its Christian roots.

I give some to Breast Cancer research. I buy stamps at the post office that donate a small amount and also the stamp promotes awareness. I also sometimes buy the domestic violence stamps.
I donate to my local domestic violence shelter, the homeless shelter, and programs that help children who are at risk and/or abused.
Also the local food pantry.
I like giving time and money, etc locally. I pretty much know where it's going and how it's being used. I can also actually work with and talk to the recipients.
Makes it more real and personal.
You can also meet some really neat people that you may not otherwise come in contact.
It's a win/win thing.

Maine Adoption Placement Service
National Adoption Center

Also, I like Bono's http://www.one.org/.

When I give, it's usually locally. Supermarket foodbank, animal shelter donations, and in the checkout line when they ask you if you'd like to donate a dollar to such and such a cause. My favorite though, is giving to the families that need help at Christmas. The parents who dont have money to buy their kids anything at Christmas. At my last job we picked a family, all pooled together, and gave them every single thing on their list and then some. Much, much more than they asked for.

If I had to choose though, all of my money would go to animal causes.

Oh, yes, I do the Operation Christmas Child shoe box thingy. They go all over the world. The kids sometimes write letters back with the help of a missionary worker there, it makes you feel really good, coz the letters are so sweet.
St. Jude's, Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, Waterfront Mission, Nature Conservation....Who ever is sitting outside of Wal-Mart at the time. Blunt maybe, but true.

I like "Days End Farm Horse Rescue" http://www.defhr.org/

the ASPCA

and the Canine Companions http://www.caninecompanions.org/

I used to work with the first one when I lived in Maryland and had our company donate money as a sponsorship as well as proceeds from money we collected from conferences.

Canine Companions has always been one of my favorites. When my ex and I got married we decided to ask for donates to that charity instead of wedding gifts. They received almost $4000 from our friends and relatives
