oh oh!!! AG posted a site a while back...

AG!!!!!!!!!! Where are yoooooouuuuuuuuuu??????

You just found out?
*doesnt want to think about what else is under your bed after two years

Actually.. this is funny.
I had (have?) this wierd habit of balling up tissues for comfort in my hand.. I'd hold them to fall asleep, been doing it since I was a child..... so under my bed, are (were)*cough* so many tissues all scrunched up, wasted.

Yes I am weird and I will embrace it.

Go to www.wholenote.com

And then go to their Lessons section.

In the search field, enter "tuning" or" introduction".

There's several lessons there to get you started witht he basics, and they have audio files to help you tune to the right pitch. (At the far bottom left hand, there's a "tuning fork" icon, and if you click on it, another window opens up for a virtual tuner. However, you can go to Lesson #11 by Christopher Sung, adn that walks you through how to tune your guitar.)

Chances are if your guitar has been sitting around not played for two years, you'll need new strings. Very old strings won't tune up or stay stay in tune very well. Just take it to any guitar shop, and witha slight extra charge, they'll put new strings on them.

Good luck!

Okay, first off- do you know what frets are? lol sorry if you do, I'm just checking.

The first (lowest) string (that's the one closest to you... er the thickest one) should be E. You can use a keyboard or piano to help you get the note... so just keep turning that string's knob til it sounds like E on the piano. Then, move your finger along to the 5th fret (count to the 5th coloumn along the fretboard) and play it. This is how the next string should sound, so tune it to sound like the 5th fret of E. Then, move your finger along to the 5th fret on the 2nd string (which is A) and so on... The order goes E, A, D, G, B, E.

Oh, wait, here I just found a site that explains it better-
http://www.guitarsite.com/tuning.htm

As for playing chords, just get a good book. Worked for me within a year I played my first gig!

Look into scales. Pick one scale, in any base note you like the most.. Get the tableture or sheet music too it, and just start every pracitce or playing session off by runign through the scale 10,,to say 100 times .

When you get bored with that move onto anything else you wana play with, chords, simple songs [irish folk tunes are my faovrate to learn with].. Then rite as your hands and finger tips start to realy hurt , run through your favorate scale once agian before puting yer axe down .

thats just what worked for me anyway.. gues just find whats gona work best to get you starteed.

Oh yeah
Magus- I often find playing til your fingers hurt works! When you play regularly, eventually your fingers build up tougher skin then you are equiped for anything my hard-rockin amigos!
Unfortunately, you can no longer feel anything in that hand, which is a little depressing

Yeah, where was that site? It was cool. You chose the chord, and it would illustrate the fingering for you. It would also give alternate fingerings. It has piano too.

Here it is: http://chordfind.com/

Start with: E(Major); Em (E-minor); G(Major); D(Major); Dm (D-minor); D7; Dmaj7 (D Major 7th); A(Major); Am (A-minor); Fmaj7.

Those are all the easiest chords. Learn them by name as well, because that's how they'll be called out or written out for you in a band situation. (Some people make the mistake of learning the fingering and forgetting what the name of the chord is -very useless in a band situation.)

Your fingers will get in shape.

As for introductory songs you can try to learn, it helps to play songs you're familiar with already. U2's got some really simple songs (like All I Want Is You http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/u/u2/all_i_want_is_you_crd.htm). Bob Dylan is also typically pretty easy. I want to give you more, but it really depends on what genre of music you're into.

Could also teach you Tab (another way of communicating chords) if you like, though I don't know how beneficial that is to actually learning anything.
