I friggin' love pilates.I love Yoga. I don't have to be the buffest or the skinniest, but when I feel strong and my muscles are definately there..... when I feel confident and spectacular and bendy... when I feel flexible and capable and alive inside my awareness of this temple I chose, I want to scream to the world... PILATES!!!!! That's all. IP: Logged |

Pilates is a series of strong, focused repetative movements, centred around the breath like yoga. It relies on core muscles.. girdle muscles for strength... It is usually used with stability balls, weights/various balls and stretchy resistance bands. It is non invasive, yet cardio as well, as the movements are usually more rhythmic and fast than yoga, which is more fexability and relaxation, a spiritual exercise, going within and stilling yourself. it lengthens muscles, so you get defined and toned, not bulky ( although it looks really good) because you are going with a full range of motion, and being aware of the capabilities of your body. It targets muscles you don't know you had....I hope I explained it well... Basically, the next day, you feel brilliantly toned and strong, even if you don't think you did an intense workout. ( it is non straining, yet intense awareness) IP: Logged |

I love Pilates too...you build core strength, but takes about 5 weeks to start seeing results...a lot easier on the body than jumping aroundIP: Logged |

I havent tried them as of yet ... but i hear they work wonders on ones body. I currently go to the gym for a express workout on the nautalis machines with some cardio before and after the workout. The gym i go to right now, doenst offer and classes like pilates or anything ... but they said they will be soon. (they just opened this location about 2 months ago) ... so its on my list of things to try when they offer it. IP: Logged |

I work with weights too, but it doesn't give me the balance and core strength that pilates does... silvermoon

I incorporate weights into my routine, either with the resistence bands or with balls. ( hee hee I said balls) or after Pilates, I will lift moderate weight, but with more reps.My husband just did some with me, and he actually quite likes it... it targets muscles he doesn't usually work on. He does chin ups all the time, which is crazy to me... I can barely do it once... and does a routine with free weights. He's 6'3 and about 170 lbs, he's trying to bulk up more, but has always been tall and slight.. ( he isn't skinny though, just normal.... no fat though, the stupid head.. .) I am reminded that HE can have late night bowls of whatever he wants, whereas, I can have only littler ones, being a woman. My stomach muscles and shoulders and hamstrings are feeling it today, so I took today off.. but I have Yoga tomorrow night. I love feeling strong and capable. IP: Logged |

Pilates is wonderful...it is a wonderful way to strengthen the back as well! Mostly via the abdominals.... Pix.. you explained it perfectly.... Pilates has long since been used in Ballet... They always look so long those people... Thats the effect... Be sure to start slow... no matter how fit you already are and if you have back problems? be extra careful...ask your Dr.
