In 1955 in Russia my grandmother on my father's side was married for the third time, supervised a large business being a bread winner for a family, went on vacations all over the country and had the housekeeper come in every day to cook, clean, etc.

My other grandmother was not quite as emancipated but still a far cry from " a good American wife". I actually remember her, in her 70s, not letting my GrandPa in and locking the door once when he had too much too drink and showed up late. She said he could go back wherever he came from and went to bed. I felt bad for Grandpa but he survived...lol
