it is in situations like these when your professional skills are tested to the MAX.
you hate being rude so i am not going to get into that.
the only solution to your problem is 'be a professional'
be cool professional and straight forward and yet not rude.
remember and tell yourself
1-'thank god he is ONLY my work mate and i donot have to put up with him in real/personal life'
2-'my life is much more meaningful and i have many things to deal with, this person is only a samll stone in this huge beautiful,clear,blue ocean of joy all around me, i shall over come and look beyond this stone with no difficulty and go ahead to enjoy and discovering this amzing ocean of life'.
3-in every situation when u deal with him keep in your mind 'i am a professional work mate and it is my duty to make others feel comfortable in my presence, i shall deliver what is expected from me and in doing so i shall be equal to all at work'.
always talking to yourself in the positive manner helps you to think positive and keep calm.
4- when you deal with him dont try to read his feelings or you may look nervous in front of him, stay calm and confident.

at the moment you are letting this problem take control of you and your professional life but from now on after reading this post YOU will take control of your life.
catch the bull by the horns to get a strong grip on your problem

in future as you will be working closer with this person i am pretty sure your problem will be resolved as working closer will bridge and ease the communication gap between the both of you.
