Holistic Wisdom

To the physician who carries only aspirin,
every problem begins to resemble a headache.

A wise physician carries a full apothecary,
and knows what advice to prescribe for every occassion.

Coming to wisdom involves a process of letting go of our attachment to a particular teaching, and making room for possibilities which we have hitherto neglected or refused to consider.

The world is full of teachers who imagine themselves experts simply because they have come to specialize in a single field.

The nutritionalist thinks every problem may be solved by diet.

The psychiatrist thinks medication is the answer.

The priest says only God can make you well.

Who is right?

All, and none.

Healing is a chain reaction.
When the mind is healed, the body and soul follow.
When the body is healed, the mind and soul follow.
When the soul is healed, the body and mind follow.

But, first, one must find a way in.

If a healer is committed to one approach,
he will turn his back on every patient
who is not open to that particular treatment;
he will wash his hands with the whole thing,
and abandon the sick man to his fate.

"You won't take aspirin!?,"
says the healer, indignant,
"Clearly, you do not want to be healed!
Come back when you are serious about getting well!"

And the patient's health continues to deteriorate.

But a wise physician does not speak in this way.
She knows that one must treat the patient,
as well as the dis-ease.

She is not rigid in her practices,
for she has many resources in her bag of tricks.

She listens to the patient, and bends accordingly.

Will he not exercise?
No matter.
She will begin with his diet.
Will he not alter his diet?
No matter.
She will speak to his heart?

And so on.

She will find the healing modality to which he is open,
knowing that,
where healing begins is of no importance,
provided that it begins, and never ends.

Are you telling us that you want to be a physician? I think you might be a good one.

I don't agree that body healing leads to mind and soul healing. There can be many comorbidities that can be treated separately. A woman can have incurable bipolar disorder but have foot fungus that is easily treated.

Mind, body, and soul are intimately connected but not as intimately, nor as consquentially are you have outlined.

I do, however, believe that western medicine needs to broaden its approach in treating illness. Usually the symptoms are treated first, which can often leave all kinds of underlying problems unnoticed. Got a headache? Take aspirin. You actually had an embolism? OOPS.

You do hit on some important points, healing should be multi pointed and broad, not narrow and focused.

Thank you, Solane Star!

Pluto might have whipped the horses a few times,
but Chiron was definitely at the reins.
That's his symbol there at the bottom.

Blue Roamer,

Hi!

quote:
Are you telling us that you want to be a physician? I think you might be a good one.

Thank you. I think I already am one. I am a doctor of the heart, mind, and soul, but not in the same sense as the doctors I have spoken of. I am a doctor of philosophy. Truth is my vocation (or avocation). Wisdom is the medicine I prescribe. I treat people, usually, without them even knowing it. And I ask no payment.

quote:
Mind, body, and soul are intimately connected but not as intimately, nor as consquentially as you have outlined.

It's an interesting thing to consider. I think that every thing you do to heal one has an effect on the other two, however slight. Healing athlete's foot is not going to have the effect on the mind that healing cancer would, but it will still have an effect equal to the problem. A person with bi-polar needs foot fungus like she needs a hole in the head. Every ailment aggravates every other.

I repeat:
"where healing begins is of no importance,
provided that it begins, and never ends."

The key phrase being "never ends".
Heal the athletes' foot, and work your way up!

To put a spin on Dylan:
"He not busy being healed is busy getting sick."

I think, for the most part, Western Medicine only treats symptoms, and almost always in ways that exacerbate the underlying cause, or causes, of illness. But this is a much longer discussion.

peace,
