heres the news to use:

quote:
Moss Releases Ultra-Thin Clothing Lineby PHILLIP BLOCH

May 9 - In a time when more and more famous people -- politicians among them -- are being forced out of the closet, fashion icon, model and muse Kate Moss has decided to dive back into her closet and become a designer.

Moss is collaborating with Britain's ultra-hip and affordable fashion destination Top Shop.

This fashion fairytale has just been unveiled across the pond and at Barney's, New York's famous mecca of fashion.

In London there was a pandemonium, a circus with clothing inspired by a kissable cocaine-free Kate in the center ring surrounded by a flock of fawning fashionista fans. So once again a phoenix rises from the ashes.

A brief stop in rehab and her career is once again phenomenally larger than her tiny stature. It seems like only yesterday she was fashion and tabloid road kill kicked to the curb with the bold headline "canceled" stamped across many of her high-paying contracts.

But here is the real shocker: If you are an average American woman you wear between a size 12-16. But regular girls beware&Kate is not thinking about you and your fashion needs if you are not a "waif." There probably won't be a thing for you to wear because our heroine Kate (no pun intended) is offering a slightly narcissistic marketing plan. Her styles come only in sizes 0-6.

Well that is great for Lilliputians in Lilliput. Keira Knightly, Nicole Richie and far too many others of this new breed of waifish starlets are going to be squeezin' their very average size 8-10 butts into Kate's clothes this season, but not many of my girlfriends will be.

At this time our society is so weight-conscious that everywhere you look there is something about losing weight -- "Celebrity Fit Club," Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick), losing all that weight like her predecessors of petiteness, Kirstie Alley and Valerie Bertinelli, Ricki Lake being reborn and repackaged as an ultra-thin celeb, etc.

In many stores you can buy a plethora of pills -- like Relacor, Hydroxycut and many more -- to just burn that fat away. (What happened to sensible eating and exercise?)

Plush ladies, just so you know, most men prefer a little junk in the trunk and some think curvyliciousness is phat, sexy and real. So after all, who do you really want to be like -- a waif model with a reoccurring drug problem and a penchant for bad boys? Or can you just be happy being the best you can be in your own clothes?

As a model and the girlfriend of rock 'n' roller and self-proclaimed junkie Pete Doherty, it was no shock to see the photos of a partying Kate indulging in cocaine splashed across the papers around the globe. But what about her 24/7 job of being a mother and her position as "role model" as the big bucks spokeswoman, who actually bankrolls the blow bonanzas?

Are we so kind and forgiving that we turn the other cheek, forgive and forget? Obviously because Kate's earnings are bigger and better than before. But what happened to actually living up to being a legend? To actually being the best you can be? To living a good life?

You like to think good does eventually triumph over evil, but in Hollywood and the news media these days not so much. Celebrity events seem to be only the preshow for the comeback once-upon-a-time porn video.

Drug busts, racial slander and arrests used to spell trouble for a career. Celebrities had at least the appearance of a conscience. But now, alas, they are just a brand selling perfume, books, clothes, anything an agent can put their name on and make a buck off of.

Why you may ask do we want to drink 50 Cent's vitamin water, use Kathy Ireland's lamps or smell like Britney Spears?

Because people live for the moment of instant gratification. Kids don't want to be a "great singer," they want to be a "star" like Beyonce. They want to be a "great actress" and tell stories, and they want to be "famous" like Lindsay Lohan. Everyone wants that touch of celebrity -- Madonna's wardrobe from H&M was a major coup.

I'm sure there will be pandemonium and fashion frenzy as the hoards of celebrity stalkers descend on Barney's for a small piece of Kate's goddess frocks. Among them is a sexy, yellow, flowing chiffon dress that clearly mimics a dress Kate wore out on the town once upon a time. The prices are set to range from $20.00 to $300.00. Not bad for a taste of the dream. Size six and under please.

Not to sound vain, but i personally have no problem with it since i am generally size 4 (sometimes size 2 for gowns), and despite the fact that i can fit into it, honestly i would never wear her stuff. Being a fashion connoisseur myself, i don't have to buy into someone else's style (who's already famous) to look good.

And by the way my overall opinion of it is, well? I guess she doesn't want the average american girl to wear her clothing, since everyone knows that the average american girl should be a 10 (well at least in my standards she should be).

I guess in a way it is ethically wrong and unsensible but, thats fashion.

(hey! even Saks Fifth Avenue has Salon Z sizes (the plus for women)

(i have many other things to say about it that aren't so sweet, but i would like to hear your opinions on it first)

*Sigh...* Looks like I am not gonna be seeing naturally curvious beauties in my generation.

Seriously, the fashion world usually only goes after thin models for one reason; The emphisis usually falls on the design of the clothes rather than the person. I think I posted a picture of my friend who won the Miss Toronto Competition; A naturally curvey beauty with the most gorgeous eyes. When I see her, I see HER and not what she is wearing to be honest.

Its not that she doesn't want the average American girl to wear her clothing; its just that she doesn't care for the average girl, period.

That being said, I have the thumbsdown icon on my post because I'm just sick of this girl and I'm not suprised about this lastest story given her ugly ugly ugly personality She's only second on my sh*tlist of bad models to Naomi Campbell.

good points Dulce, and honestly i feel that she's making the sizes so 'fashionably exclusive' because she might have some self-esteem issues or something negative going on, or the alternative, she may just be too stuck in her 'i'm a model' mentality.

I was watching THS 'trust fund babies'. and even though kate moss isn't a trust fund baby, the documenters said something particularly interesting when they stated: "These girls (rich girls from billion dollar families) expect everyone to be capable of doing what they do"

And I honestly think Kate Moss must be the same way, if shes doing this.

And I also think that it lessens her credibility as a designer, to make the sizes so 'frivolously thin'. I mean, even Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and CHANEL have sizes that at least go beyond a 6.

I agree with the both of you.

Well actually the real credit for hitting the plus size market goes to Tommy Hilfiger who first saw the undeniable need for plus-size fashion in the North American Market.

I was anorexic at one time in my life and would not wish that curse on anyone.

I think in all respects Kate Moss is a bad example for young girls and young women. So is Paris Hilton and I am so glad to see her doing time in jail. 43 days is it? LOL

True what Xodian said. Curves take the eye away from the clothes onto the woman and that is exactly why models are living mannequins. That trend is changing slowly now as so many models are dying from anorexia and bulemia.

So Kate Moss is out of step with reality in more ways than one.

I think that lots of people have trouble when it comes to buying clothes no matter what size they are. It's always a matter of lots of experimentation (or custom tailoring) to get anything that truly appears fitted. At least that's my opinion.

I don't think I care if she wants to cater to small people. If she thinks that limiting her customer base is the way to go, more power to her. Other clothing manufactures are happy to make the remaining sales.

Fat people will usually want to be thin.I think what ever you are naturally is the healthiest, although if i was a fat woman i think i'd eat very little. Just the way it is.
I feel sorry for fat people, but get annoyed at fat one's that think they're slim.
The healthiest thing of all is an accurate self-perception whatever your size etc...
If you have no Earth you will never put on weight. I have no Earth whatsoever and know that i will be be toned even at 55 (if i'm still alive).
A while a go i went through a little phase of plastering pics of myself all over the place Apologies to anyone who missed out on that.

Lol! BUD true to that.

Anyway, Kate Moss obviously will lose out on a huge market if she plans on going through with this and well... if her plans are to stay small (pardon the pun) then so be it. Business wise; That is truly a limited prespective when it comes to expansion of her little line.

I'm quite surprised by the reasonable prices, but I'm not surprised about the limited sizes. As a "celebrity" she herself has a limited fanbase, mainly among those with similar builds - or different builds with similar coke habits. Maybe that's just her marketing ploy. If I were a designer, I would prefer to have more people wearing my clothing.

Personally, I don't care what sizes are offered. But I do worry about the effect things like this can have on my thirteen-year-old niece. For American girls, personal value is based on how corpse-thin you can get. Her friends say things like, "I need to be skinnier," yet they never say, "I need to be healthier." It worries me.

Not true. My friend's grandmother had a fire & air chart that contained no earth. She was so ginormous they had to order a special extra wide coffin for her burial. I think your ascendant (possibly combined with your 6th house) has more to do with your frame size and predispositions to excess or under weight.

Its sad that people can't seem to distiguish the two from each other. Being thin doesn't necessarily mean you're in shape. Reaching your optimal BMI is the way to go (and even that system is in question these days.)

A friend of mine has a theory that high fashion models are thin because the design side of the industry is dominated by gay men and most of the supermodels lack the curves characteristic of women (some of them have the bodies of boys) - ie; the designer's ideal of beauty isn't feminine at all, and the industry has adapted to that. So basically they're putting women with underfed boy's bodies in dresses...

I don't agree because there are enough female designers to knock that theory down, but I have to wonder if there's not *some* truth to it.

I think if Kate Moss wants to limit her client base to the small percentage of women worldwide who are ultra rich and undernourished-teenage-boy-thin, well, I wish her luck. She's going to have to charge a lot to make up for the lack of volume in her business.

quote:
As a "celebrity" she herself has a limited fanbase, mainly among those with similar builds - or different builds with similar coke habits.

Whoever said they feel sorry for fat people - I don't unless they appear unhappy. If anything I'm jealous - like, "look at you, you eat and enjoy it, and don't give a damn what anyone thinks, good for you!".

I read a study once that polled white women and african-american women asking them questions about self-image.

A high % of overweight black women had a positive self-image, compared to white women who weren't overweight, who overwhelmingly had a negative self-image. So basically, a black woman can be overweight and still love herself - a white girl can be thin-ish and hate herself.

There are plenty of black supermodels who are rail thin - yet those women seem to have less of an effect on how women in the black community view themselves or what weight they feel pressured to be.

I don't recall what the theories were for why the huge difference in self-image, but whatever it is, I think a lot of women could take a lesson from it.

I really don't think that Kate Moss should be the only one that gets the blame for this kind of 'skinny nightmare' of the fashion, or design world.

I've read up on Karl Lagerfeld, and most of the things he says about fatter, more plump women are not so pleasant and kind.

despite my obsession with chanel, this guy, Lagerfeld, really freaks me out sometimes.

heres the news to use:

quote:
Lagerfeld shrugs off concerns over skinny models
Last updated at 18:00pm on 4th October 2006

German designer Karl Lagerfeld has shrugged off concerns about the fashion industry's obsession with ultra-thin models.

He says countries such as France have problems with a rise in overweight people rather than underweight.

Madrid last month sparked a controversy when it banned excessively thin models from its catwalks after accusations their appearance may cause eating disorders in young women.

But the runways in Paris this week have been filled by girls with child-like figures and stick-thin legs.

"We don't see anorexic (girls). The girls are skinny. They have skinny bones," Lagerfeld told reporters after his show, which saw models parade out in tiny short dresses, barely covering their almost non-existent behinds.

Asked whether the fashion industry was to blame for eating disorders of many young girls who were starving themselves, the designer said: "No, that is something to sell papers."

The pony-tailed Lagerfeld, who has himself drastically shed weight, is presenting clothes for his Karl Lagerfeld label in Paris, as well as for fashion house Chanel.

The multi-tasking fashion icon edits books and shoots fashion photographs for glossy magazines, and also created a one-off collection for Swedish retailer H&M.

Lagerfeld said the rise in the number of overweight people in many countries was a problem.

"In a country like France, with 18 per cent of girls in the (northern region of) Pas de Calais being too fat - I think they needed more treatment than the zero-point-I-don't-know per cent of the too skinny ones," he said.

It was not clear which numbers Lagerfeld was referring to. A recent survey showed almost a third of French people were overweight and 12.4 per cent were obese, while around 5 per cent were underweight.

Models presenting the Karl Lagerfeld collection paraded out in tight uniform style shirts, featuring tie-like lapels, others presented long floating transparent dresses with ruffles, wearing tights with large flowers on their thin legs.

Lagerfeld's comments came after other designers shrugged off fashion's responsibility for the hype to be skinny.

Designer Giorgio Armani has blamed stylists and the media for the fashion industry's obsession with ultra-thin women.

Burberry's designer Christopher Bailey said he was very thin but was able to eat like a horse, noting people had to be conscious and sensible about the issue and use common sense.

Okay MCM, that statement about earth signs and weight, where did you get that? LOL I am a Taurus and I eat what I want and am still at my age only 9 lbs. above my normal weight in youth. Which makes me under the normal weight for my height and age. Many other Taureans I have known and seen are not overweight either. Sort of shoots that theory down that all Taurus people over indulge and are overweight.

I think weight problems have more do to with genetics than anything else. Also, there are many medical problems that cause people to be overweight. It isn't always due to over eating. For some people BOTH men and women, just eating less does not help at all. I have known women and men who even if they starve they cannot lose weight due to medical problems. We can't assume that people who are overweight just eat too much. In some cases that might be true but not in all cases.

My concerns about the example Kate Moss is setting with her clothing line are along the same lines as Neferemi stated.

I also agree with what has been said here about it being a real stupid business decision as she is omitting a large percentage of her market and it is her choice to do what she wants.

Other than the message it is sending out to young girls, that if you are not thin you are nothing, I really could care less what Kate Moss does. As far as I can see she is an air head anyway.

Mirandee...
That is a scary picture.
quote:
Reaching your optimal BMI is the way to go

True Xodian!

Electrical Impedance is generally more acurate than calipers.
But Water displacement is the best for determining lean mass.
Lean mass is what one weighs WITHOUT any fat.
But one must have some fat.
Less than 12% is generally considered too thin.
More than 33% is considered too heavy.
My lean mass last time checked was 152.8 pounds.
Than means I could weigh between 170 and 200 or so without being out of a fit healthy range.
I knew women who were not as fit as me who weighed far far less than my lean mass minus the required fat ratio added.
Weight charts to not factor in lean to fat ratios.
I too was anorexic in my early teens after crashing off 100 pounds one summer. I vomited to stay thin. I did that for 3 years until it nearly killed me.
Yeah, I am way too heavy now.
But anorexia is ugly and unhealthy also.
Thighs should not be smaller than knees and rib cages should not protrude more than breasts.
When was 200 pounds I was (approx) 46-33-36.
And at 180 I was (approx)45-32-35.
At age 52 I will be thrilled to get back to either of those sizes!
Ladies clothing never fit me even when I was thin unless it was stretchy.
But guys clothing fits perfectly! Women's clothes are too tight in the shoulders and and waists, and way too baggy in the butt, hips and legs.
Remember folks, muscle weighs more than fat of equal size. And muscles burn fat!

She does have a pretty face though. Some weight on her would make her far prettier I think.

That's very true about muscle, Fayte. I know from when I used to exercise 3 times a week on a regular basis I could lose inches and go down in sizes and not have to lose any additional weight.

Too much pressure on women in our society. Now, men are getting the same pressures put on them. Being content just as we are, just the way we look no matter what size we are is what is far more important. That's the message our kids should be getting instead of what the media promotes.

Anorexics still see themselves as being fat even when they are skin and bone. It's all in the mind and that image is projected back when they look in the mirror.

I wouldn't trade places with these women for all the money they have. It's a trap they get stuck in that will most likely end up killing them at a very young age.

Mirandee you made an invalid inference based on what i said. I know that Earth represents a propensity to retain weight (or more accurately fat). I didn't say all Taurians were fat. I said that people with entirely no Earth would not retain fat. That example that someone came up with incolving that huge old woman must have had some Earth that they didn't know about.
I'm telling you that no Earth (which is fairly rare anyway) means thin and non-weight-retentive. Fact.
And to the guy that said 'keep the dream alive amigo'. It's no dream.
You lot seem to obviously be into astrology but reject some of the more far reaching principals.
You lot need to grow some balls like MCM.

No, now that is largely incorrect. Not all earth is like that. You see, saturn the planet of restriction, the opposite of Juipter's expansionism, rules Capricorn. Therefore, people who have a significant Capricorn or Saturn placement in their chart (like in the top three) have a propensity to be wiry, not fat . And that again, is saturn being "restrictive" on weight as opposed to being expansive like Jupiter.

Virgo influence tends to have the same effect as Capricorn being ruled by Mercury.....people heavily influenced by it are thin much like their gemini counterparts.

Yeah, I know that Taurus likes food a little too much, like cancer, so I guess it would apply to that but of course that doesn't mean that all Taureans will be overweight.

But everything I said above has to be taken with a grain of salt though because weight can be from many other factors too ,like genetics, overeating due to depression, and so on. Astrology can't be the be all-end all in determining weight.

It's weighted more heavily in the personal planets obviously, but i gave people the benefit of the doubt that they'd at least have the intelligence to deduce that. Maybe in some cases this confidence was mis-placed.

I don't really care. Not every designer is going to cater to every size. If it were wrong for Kate (only ONE small designer) to cater to 0-6 then it would be wrong for Layne Bryant to cater to 12+ sizes.

Most designers don't make tall sizes for me but I don't fault them for it. I just shop at the ones that do offer me the size I want.

btw, marsconjunctmercury, I'm interested in the fact that you bring up FAT so often in your post when before that most of the posts consisted of 'sizes' and 'average weights'. Do you consider someone that can't fit into Kate's clothes fat? Or the Average woman as fat?

PS: Damn my Capricorn in Jupiter. That's the only earth in my chart and it's making me hold on to this extra 20 pounds!

In my case the confidence was misplaced, MCM because as I have said before on the threads, you can take all that I know about astrology and put it on the head of a pin. I am absorbing and picking up things about astrology as I go along here at LL. Truthfully, I am not a firm believer in astrology. Just curious and learning.

I know that you didn't say that about all Taureans, MCM. Sorry if what I said seemed to imply that you did. I was more addressing your comment that fat women should eat less. Doesn't always work. Eating is not always the reason that people are overweight.

I was just expanding on your earth sign reference and I do know that Taurus is an earth sign. It is just something that I am aware that in astrology is applied to Taureans. I just wanted to clarify that all we Taureans are not of the Henry VIII or Orson Wells variety. In his later life Marlon Brando was another Taurus chub ball.

As DL said, I just wanted to make the point that not all heavy set people are that way due to over eating.

Regarding the balls, lol, no I don't want to grow any of those. I enjoy being a girl. I do admire and value honesty in people, yourself included. I abhor false flattery for that reason so I mean that or wouldn't be saying it.
