Does anyone know anything about these, or if gypsies even have them? Or their cultural attitude towards them? I'm asking because I think it could be useful where I have a "space gypsy" character (aperusa from Spelljammer) in a fic I'm about to continue in the near future (I hope to have it posted by fall). I also have a half-Vistani from Ravenloft I might want to do a fic about. Since they're both based on traditional gypsies, I figure that asking about traditional gypsies would be helpful. ~ dervish ~ tats .. as in tattoos ?? google string .. " tattoos in gypsy culture" .. ~ http://www.pinkgypsy.com/questions2.htm ~ ~ http://www.cre.gov.uk/gdpract/g_and_t_facts.html ~ * Roma are recorded in Greece and Turkey around 1000AD and in Scotland in 1505. * 'Gypsy' is thought to be a derivative of 'Egyptian' .. which is what the settled population believed the Roma to be. * Irish Travellers have been known as a distinct group since 400AD. Dervish: Thanks for asking this. Romani culture has always fascinated me. Probably because I romanticize it. And HD those are links. I spent perhaps far too much time looking at the dice sets with a serious case of the wants. IP: Logged |

For those interested, I did get this response on one board: quote: I can't speak for all gypsies everywhere, but coming from a Romani family I can safely say we don't have either a particular affinity nor a particular dislike for tattoos. However, it is traditionally more common for men to get tham than women, often indulging in the variety of artwork found on their travels to signify special events or places (much like sailors). Women are much more likely to have henna tattoos (like the Asian henna tattoos though differing in design) especially if they are dancers. A gypsy will rarely indulge in a tattoo that does not have some sort of religious/spiritual meaning. We are not unlike the native American Indians in our attitudes actually, believing that something so indelible should have significance. Hope that helps.
