Or so says JK Rowling: http://www.newsweek.com/id/50787 quote: In front of a full house of hardcore Potter fans at Carnegie Hall in New York, Rowling, sitting on the stage on a red velvet and carved wood throne, read from her seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," then took questions. One fan asked whether Albus Dumbledore, the head of the famed Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, had ever loved anyone. Rowling smiled. "Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling as the audience errupted in surprise. She added that, in her mind, Dumbledore had an unrequited love affair with Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort's predecessor who appears in the seventh book. After several minutes of prolonged shouting and clapping from astonshed fans, Rowling added. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."
Leaky Cauldron also sounds in quote: First, the biggest revelation of the night came when Jo revealed to her audience the fact that Albus Dumbledore is gay and had fallen in love with fellow wizard and friend, Gellert Grindelwald. This, by no doubt, elicited the biggest reaction of the evening with many audience members gasping upon hearing the news. So much so, it promoted Jo to say: "If I had know this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."
Guess she felt she hadn't ticked off the fundies enough. ;-)

I love it! What a great move for her to choose the most beloved and wise character and define him as something sometimes socially misunderstood or unaccepted. It's like saying boldly; It's okay to be Gay, great people are gay.. bet you didn't know that! Oh, I love her for that.

Is it just me or was that too much information? Not because being gay is "right" or "wrong" or any such nonsense ... but because it's Dumbledore. I actually enjoyed the lack of information regarding his love life and the love lives of most of the characters in the book. It's what made it, in part, seem so real to me. I mean, as a child, I didn't even think about my teachers being in relationships. It wasn't good or bad, it just wasn't ... in my mind. I dunno'. Even today, I don't really care about people's love lives. It's what makes young love so romantic, I think. That burning need to share your feelings, to let people know you found someone, etc. But then, I've never been open about discussing my relationships with other people so I guess it might just be me.
