Is a Supervolcano on the Way? 10-Mar-2005There are enough supervolcanoes on Earth to wipe out much of the planet and they may "wake up" much sooner than we thought. Supervolcanoes explode with a force that is thousands of times that of a normal volcanic eruption. Earthquake experts once thought it would take hundreds of thousands of years for the reservoirs of molton rock (called magma) lying beneath a supervolcano to build up enough pressure to cause an eruption, but a new study shows that the time between eruptions can actually be only tens of thousands of years, meaning many of them are long overdue. The Journal of Petrology reports that an eruption from a supervolcano can be strong enough to cause change the world's climate enough to cause a mass extinction, due to the large amounts of ash that would be thrown up into the atmosphere. One of these temporarily dormant volcanoes lies beneath Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The last time it erupted, over 600,000 thousand years ago, half the North American continent was covered in volcanic ash. Exactly how long does it take for the enough magma pressure to build up beneath a supervolcano to cause it to erupt? The answer: around 40,000 years, which may seem like a long time to us but is a blink of the eye in geologic time. A super eruption is five to 10 times more likely to happen than an asteroid impact. Scientists now know that the magma reservoir underneath the Yellowstone supervolcano has risen 19 inches, which is evidence that pressure is building. Paul Rincon writes in BBC news that geologist Stephen Self wants to set up an emergency contingency plan to prepare for the eruption of a supervolcano. The super-eruption that struck Sumatra 74,000 years ago may have taken the human race to the edge of extinction by blacking out the sun and causing a "volcanic winter." DNA studies show that the number of humans on the Earth dropped to about 10,000, probably as a result of climate change. http://www.unknowncountry.com/news/?id=4463 IP: Logged |

Uh yep. That's right. I was just reading another article on it and they understand that this is one thing they can do nothing to stop and we are long over due for a super eruption. And it will happen it's only a matter of time. So task forces are being set up to figure out options and possible plans on how we will deal with the after effects. IP: Logged |

Dr. Evil tried to make all the volcanoes explode, but I thought it was just fiction. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

I watched a special a few months ago on Yellowstone. The caldera is so massive one cannot see all of it even from a plain. A geologist did a survey of Yellowstone, and found the ground is shifting rapidly, that is, more than likely magma is being pushed upward. And yes 26T, our mitochondrial DNA shows a record that we almost become extinct, roughly the same time as the last Yellowstone eruption. Hmm, maybe that's why our world's leaders are letting things go to hell in a handbasket....Have a nice day! IP: Logged |

Wow, that's fascinating whalewasp. A little scary too. I wouldve liked to have seen that special. It seems as though it's just a matter of time before the next eruption and they say it's long overdue. I wonder what the task force has come up with so far for the emergency contingency plan.....really gets you thinking doesnt it?You have a nice day too! IP: Logged |
