We have both in the garden, and I don't know what to do with them (how to save them for use), and whether or not I should be transplanting them indoors for the winter? I'm embarrassed by my lack of research, but I've been otherwise occupied, and my brain seems to be almost permanently in a fog.

I do have a book called Herbs for Pets, that had all sorts of information, but I need to dig it out.

Wow, fresh basil. I have always wanted a fresh herb garden, especially with basil and thyme.

Teasel,
you can just munch on a few basil leaves everyday to ward off cold, cough and flu as well as build up your immunity.
You can even crush them and use the juice on burns and cuts.It serves as an antiseptic.
It is used as a garnish in several italian recipes as well.
Crushed leaves applied to the scalp also promotes hair growth
As for lavender You mean leaves or flowers?
I have no ideas on how to use it fresh.

Hi teasel,Basil will likely die over winter whatever you do with it.. take off the best leaves and hang them to dry in a brown paper bag.

Lavender will go dormant, as long as it doesn't freeze for weeks on end, that can kill it.
If you can get it close to an outside wall of your house,(assuming it is in a pot?) the temperature difference can keep it happier.
