Do any of you gardeners have a problem with (da da dummm) deer?

They're a bit rampant in my neck of the woods - no natural predators and hunting's pretty restricted.

We've just planted some trees (two apple - Granny Smith and Black Arkansas, two varieties of sweet cherry, and two paw-paw varieties) and some tayberry bushes and're also going to start a fruit and veggie garden in the spring (I just received a bunch of heritage and open-pollinating seeds - so excited ). The deer, though...the deer.

We're investing in deer fence ($$, but we hope to reuse it for a while if they don't mess it up too badly), but do you have any other tips and tricks?

If it comes down to it, my husband's scouting out good crossbows - there's no rifle hunting allowed below 10 acres in our county.

Noise, that's what bothers deers...

wind-chimes on the trees...

aluminum pie plates around the garden..
bells, anything to scare them off..
without hurting them!!!

These deer aren't like that, lotus - I've actually had them challenge me as I got out of the car (foot stomping).

There is nothing - nothing - in our area that escapes their mouths.

I, for one, am not really pro-hunting, but they have no natural predators at all and are breeding themselves out of food supplies.

If man has destroyed the natural balance, I don't see much other choice.

How about a guard dog!?

I'm heading out to do some
errands, but will be asking
along the way, how people
deal with aggressive deers...

you could put food out for
them, on the outer perimeters..

salt licks, and pumpkins!?

Simple, mark your territory...

ask your husband to have a bunch of
friends over, drink beer, lol and
pee around the things you want to
protect, or do the perimeter...

this has to be done every couple
of days...

where to get so much pee, I don't know!?

Urban territorial deer, yep a nightmare!

Being rural and having hunting seasons I still have to take strong measures to ensure deer are kept at bay.

Human hair helps and most important is a dog. Either a herding or guard dog. I have a Great Pyrenees for the job and she keeps our reclaimed acres pest free.

Choose carefully as the dog will be a family pet and be able to do her job too. The Pyre is wonderful with kids and an Astralian Sheperd is awesome too. Talk to your local shelter and work with them. I would recommend a dog under one year.

Believe me, I`ve tried all the old measures too and sooner or later, the deer are on to you and it starts all over again... so a dog is it

If your children were older i'd say maybe get a chihuahua. Mine loved to chase the strays I have that live out back, especially when one of the friendly ones walked up to me. She freaked. I have trained her not to now and she mostly is fine with them now and we all hang out there together peacefully. But chi's are one of the best guard dogs out there.

Juni and Emerald had some good advice!

Did not know that about pee Emerald! lol

T, hehe, I had forgtten about it, til
I started asking people...

I've never seen an aggressive deer,
thank goodness!

when I had a farm, I had a pure-bred
German Shepard, he was excellent with
the kids, and an awesome herder,
every evening, he'd help me herd
the chickens into their coop, for
lock up, foxes, bobcats, etc...

German Sheperds can make wonderful farm dogs. They are happiest when they are working

Emeraldopal - We're willing to try just about anything I'm willing to try the pee thing (probably from cups, though) - I'm a Mom...bodily fluids have lost all power over me

re: husband: I don't think inviting guy friends over and drinking will work - he's Baha'i
Well, he's not a very good Baha'i - he will drink sometimes, though it's usually limited to us sharing a beer or two every couple of weeks. He's not touching a drop (his initiative) while I'm pregnant.

If I were to have my absolute choice, it'd be an old world German Shepherd (oversized by today's breed standard, calm, with a "straight-line" back).
My Grandparents had them when I was growing up. They looked very much like this:

They were the best dogs - definitely guard dogs, but as I child I could hang off of / practically ride them and they'd just take it in stride.

We're both working full time right now, though - it wouldn't be fair to a dog, especially a puppy, to bring him or her in Though we've talked about reevaluating once the baby's born. (I may cut down to part time.)

We'd definitely look for a puppy or dog young enough to acclimate to our cats, kids, and chickens.

T - I'm afraid my cats, especially our big "tom" (he's neutered, but *huge*) might beat up a chihuahua My sister has two, and they didn't fare very well the last time they came over for a visit.

They are adorable, though!

I always say, let the puppy pick you!!!
No matter what gender!

The Pee really works, it's just,
gee, how do get so much of it, lol

I don't drink anymore, it's bad stuff!
EVIL, should be illegal!!!

German Shpards are gorgeous creatures. I've never had the pleasure of getting to know one well. They seem like very loyal and well mannered dogs.

Mockingbird, LOL I have some stray cats I take care of outside (because I am allergic to them, I can't let them in) The shelters are all full and can't take on more so there are a lot of strays in these parts and i make sure they have food and water. I'm pretty positive the two main ones that l have here were left here by the last owner.

anyway, point was, they too are HUGE - like twice my dog's size and could take my little chihuahua in a second. LOL She might disagree with me, being so brave and fearless sometimes, but little does she know, I have stepped in and saved her from getting beat right up. lol

i can't let her outside on her own with them living out there and am constantly babysitting everybody when we are outside to make sure everyone gets along. There are daily "close calls" but they are getting better at learning to live with each other and getting more comfortable in each others company. I would not leave them all alone together though.

So no, might not be a good mix with your cat either. lol

Emerald - Especially in excess, I can definitely see your point. I've come to appreciate a good craft brew, though I can only have a glass (or less) at a time.
Wine gives me headaches :-/

cuuuute

i actually had one that looks just like yours a long time ago. A friend got it for me for my birthday and I couldnt give it up. I seemed to become *somewhat* immune to the allergy over time, but not totally. And i just dealt with it. Lately I've been more allergic after picking up one of the ones outside, found out the hard way. So unfortunatly can't have one.

too bad really because i'd really like to.

Anyway, best of luck with whatever you do. I remember when i lived in Virginia briefly deer where EVERYWHERE.

I have baby deer pics on my MySpace. A friend of mine found it when its mother was killed by a hunter. They are raising it.

The deer, perhaps, but not my sanity.

I like dogs - they're good people - but they're also like having kids.
I already have a small pack of kids.
