Wishes are not only allowed, but strongly recommended.Nine out of ten dandelion-blowers affir that the aforementioned said dandelion-wish not only enhances, but multi-dimensionally promulgates the expansion of the full spectrum inner fulfillment of the dandelion experience. Hopefully this is not directly in proportion to the germination rate of the wind-swept dandelion population now becoming rampant, as it may encourage Alien infiltration to occur. Birthday Candles are good, too. Ever tried Birthday Candles? IP: Logged |

Yeah, when I was little I did the candle wish. And wishbones. I do make a birthday wish every year, though. IP: Logged |

Aw, I blow on dandelions with my son, and I always say "Make a wish!" We used to do that when we were little, too. We don't use pesticides (besides Diatomaceous Earth and the occasional spray if there's something REALLY nasty around, like carpenter ants), so there are abundant dandelions in our yard throughout the spring and summer. I've considered putting the leaves in salads, but haven't done so yet. I think I'll try all of the recommendations for dandelions this spring. IP: Logged |

There's like a little song you are supposed to say...Taste them first, Violets. Then go from there.

Heh. Okay. I was telling my husband this past summer, when all of our salads were fresh from the garden, that we should throw in some dandelion leaves as well, but we never did. I'll nibble on one first, haha. I only pluck them from the flower garden, really. My son LOVES them (yellow is his favorite color), so I leave them in the yard. But they seem to try to take over the flower garden well enough that we should have plenty. IP: Logged |

When I was doing the Organic Community Garden deal, I would make a little salad bag I included in the weekly harvest delivery. It had many edibles in it, including Violets, hehe. Nasturtiums are really great for that, because they add the pepper. Here is a Wish link, but it doesn't include the rhyme, darn it! http://everything2.com/title/Things+on+which+you+can+make+a+wish

Aw...I think we did all of those as kids, except the desserts and white horses. My grandma and I once made candy from violets in her garden when I was little, as she had an old book from her home in the Ozarks that had a lot of neat information in it. We would go out to the creek and pick cattails and eat the lower part of the stalks just for fun. IP: Logged |

I once forcefed my brother, because Euell Gibbons said "Many parts are edible."He's never forgotten that. Really, he still brings it up to this day! They were as fluffy as a Dandelion... IP: Logged |

Hahahaha...! I recall once getting in trouble because I was supposed to be watching my little brother (I was like 6 or 7 years old), and was playing with other kids, and turned around and he had a mouth full of fluffy cattails, ha. I'll have to ask him if he remembers that or not. IP: Logged |

Oooh, neat! I always try to make my own rose water with the few roses we have here, but I have to add witch hazel to it. Maybe not enough rose petals, or perhaps I'm doing it wrong... IP: Logged |

I've never made it.Do you suppose it is the alcohol? Extracting or preserving? IP: Logged |

Honestly, the recipe that I found just called for distilled water, boil the water, and then pour it over the rose petals just enough to cover them. Cover and let sit for a while, then strain the roses. But it never really seemed like rose water (and I used tap water before I realized that it called specifically for distilled water). So...I'm not sure. But there weren't many rose petals in the batch to begin with, heh. I suppose adding vodka might add the preservation needed to help it keep for a while, if it were a large batch. But I'm not sure if that particular recipe was very good... IP: Logged |

It calls for distilled because it is pure, less likely to go bad.If you use it quickly, or keep it in the icebox, you'll be fine. Witchhazel has alcohol, it would be better for your skin to use it than something stronger. Yes, the more herb, the stronger the batch, but you want to cover it, so... IP: Logged |

Well, it's an extract, right? That's what they use to extract it. When you make a tincture or an extract, you just pour a high proof alcohol over the herb. I just buy 151 and pour it on St. John's Wort and you can literally watch the alcohol turn red right before your very eyes. It is amazing! Most herbs you do dry, but that one is an exception. I like to make it right at the moment of the Solstice. (St. John's Day) IP: Logged |

I suppose that's right, ha. My brain has been in a real fog lately. I usually use witch hazel to steep my herbs in to add to homemade facial scrubs, so I suppose it could have occurred to me. Wait...do you use Bacardi for your tinctures? When I make perfume I use vodka, because there's no smell. But I would like to find a stronger alcohol for when I need to make other things. Do you use anything to help the oils blend with the alcohol? IP: Logged |

No, I usually use them for different purposes.I make the St. John's Wort with both, because the tincture is good for nerves and the oil is good for massage. You just heat it a bit in the diffuser... I make the tincture for nerves or sometimes I will blend it half and half for gums. I knew smokers who loved that stuff. It's so good because with the Tea Tree it will aerate and disinfect at the same time. Healthy. The oil is good for all-purpose salves as well. IP: Logged |
