Should you get wood or plastic?

Boy, those barrels on chains look like the easiest.

Would make turning it a breeze...

Should I get plastic or wood, do you think, E?

Normally it is best to have it straight on the soil, for the enzymes and mi-? oh crap, I forget the name, but basically it needs things in the soil to transform, but if you bought something to accelerate it, that might change that need.

I would think soil on the bottom, and concrete sides would be a good way to go. Wood would be my first choice, but it's bound to harbour things you wouldn't want to keep.

Could leave slats for aeration, though.

Take into consideration that I am trained at this as a Profession, rather than a backyard pastime.

Ideally, I would have a row of the cubicles, one for sand, one for compost, one for waste in the process of composition, one for bagged products and one for ready-made soil.

With the concrete backdrop, you can easily turn it, with or without a Bobcat, it gives you a firm wall to lever against.

Let me think, what was my favourite soil mix?

3 parts sand
2 parts compost
1 part peat moss
1 part perlite

In School, we used Osmocote, but I would probably use Kelp and Phosphate Rock for Nutrients.

I would think that a ceramic compost bin might be a good choice, if they make such an animal.

I just don't like plastic much.

Same with clothes, I don't like synthetic material against my skin.

I like things that breathe.

When you compost, there are certain key things you shoot for.

You need an animal product for heat.
You need something like lawn clippings for fuel.
You need an even ph for balance.
You need aeration, so you don't get the anaerobic bacteria, or clumping.
You need the earth beneath for the right microbes and such.

That's why I like Phosphate Rock, because it is base, and keeps the mix from getting too acid and thus locking up. Also it is an organic fertilizer, good for roots and bloom.

I don't use anything as a bin, I just put it at the base of my Redwood Tree, so it is hidden, and aerated, with the earth in contact.

You can use baking soda in the same fashion as the Phosphate, or ashes from your fireplace, any organic base like that. That will also neutralize the odor.

Just don't overdo it.

Well, um.

I do have a lovely indigo one in ceramic.

Of course, it looks a bit like a Deep Royal Blue Hydrant, and sits in the cabinet underneath my kitchen sink.

That's a very handy place for it to be.

It has a deodorizer in the lid.

I actually just toddled over to this forum to ask about a compost bin. I'd like to buy one when we move this summer. I'm excited about it because I've always wanted one. We juice a lot so we have a LOT of pulp left over.

I am gonna try under the tree BUT can't put juice waste in cuz we have racoons etc. I just put old leaves and old pieces of kale, collards etc which I don't think they like.

There are bins galore on Amazon with reviews but I am still not sure lol

It was teeny fruit on the top of the mango tree. The avocados were on the bottom and almost ripe. The figs were teeny. My friend said animals won't eat non ripe fruit but I don't know if that is true. They left the grapefruit, Randall

You know how your fruit and veggies are your babies. I was sooo sad to see about 50 or more mangoes gone, all the avos and the small baby figs. It was such a joy to see them grow every day.

Thanks again for the compost heap under the tree, E. I love it. It is so brilliant but I never would have thought of it!
