Has anyone here tried to grow eggplant? My seeds aren't sprouting - I first tried a month ago. From the store-bought seedling, I have one trying to grow. It was overshadowed by cabbage and kale, so I moved it to a sunnier spot.IP: Logged |

We used to grow them for sale at the Horticulture Unit.Think they liked heat. Greenhouse Cultivation, for an early start. Think they need a long season. I'm thinking ichiban was the variety, but it's been a long time. IP: Logged |

Yeah, found this for you. Think you can strike cuttings too, though. quote:
OVERVIEW: Eggplant is a member of the Solanaceae family which includes tomatoes, peppers, ground cherries and potatoes. Eggplant is very sensitive to cold weather and should be started indoors long before planting in the garden. Eggplant require a long warm season for best yields. Eggplant should be planted in full sun and requires ample water and fertile soil with lots of organic matter. Eggplants are easily injured by frost and will not do well with long periods of cool weather. Eggplants are like tomatoes, except that eggplants like warmer conditions. PROPAGATION / SOWING OF EGGPLANT: Eggplant seeds must be started indoors 8-10 weeks prior to last frost. Sow seeds ¼” deep and provide a soil temperature of 24-27°C (75-80°F). Even moisture is essential while the eggplant seed is germinating. Germination is slow (up to 2 weeks). Gradually harden off seedlings, but do not allow temperature to go below 15°C (60°F). Transplant 18” apart in beds or rows 20-30” apart.

Thank you. Temperatures did get below 60 degrees. that happens occasionally, even in the Summer. I guess I'll go without eggplant then, unless I can figure something out. IP: Logged |

It's very simple to make a little Seed Starter, they sell them everywhere. This sounds like my favourite one. Then if you get one of those little wires, many, many Seeds and Cuttings thrive with bottom heat.
Plant Heater Cable I always wanted a Mother House (with all the Plants to start from,) and a Propagation House, like they had at the Horticulture Unit. Heaters under the sand, and timed misters on top. Then twenty flats of Cuttings. Paradise. I really like Kelp for a Rooting Hormone. IP: Logged |

Hi Teasel, I don't grow eggplant here but if I was starting from seeds, I would start them in March. I think May/June is just too late for eggplant.IP: Logged |

Thanks, Yin. I have had no luck with seedlings, unless a couple in little pots are unmarked eggplant, but the one that I bought in May, as a seedling, is teasing me. It's growing, and seems to have little blossoms trying to grow, but still hasn't produced anything. It doesn't help that I've been so "meh" that I haven't fertilized the plants for about a month now. I keep meaning to, but there's also been a lot of rain. IP: Logged |

They're just enjoying their Inner Child. No, it was difficult, up at four thousand foot, but down at the twenty five hundred, we called it the banana belt. They managed, and had a wonderful Garden. I used to work for them, they had Casabas and Honeydews and Seedless... I'm really not much for veggies. Love me some Perennials. IP: Logged |

It's real good! Oh man, we used to get so much.
(Cooked down to so little ) And pattypan and lemon cucumber and yellow pear tomatoes. Cilantro and Basil, if they didn't bolt. But really, with all the Perennials we have here, it's unnecessary. We have Grapes (galore) and Cherries, Apricots and Apples, Peaches Almonds Walnuts Pecans a Sugar Maple, a Mulberry(fruitless, I think.) This place is a Virtual Paradise. Oh, yeah, Asparagus.
