And vice versa.
What in the chart makes a woman more masculine than usual? A man more feminine?

I've found Cancer rising males and men with the moon conjunct the ascendant or Moon in the first house more empathic, at least in appearance.
I find Cancer rising males are
lousy at hiding their feelings - their faces really seem to betray their emotions a lot of the time.
They also do really well with women , and seem to have a lot of female friends.

I don't know if this makes them more feminine, but maybe more female-friendly

Perhaps Mercury rising (or the double signs it rules, Gemini and Virgo) makes a person look androgynous, especially if Uranus is prominent.

Well, I can answer for the feminine male, since most people think that I'm gay even though I am straight. I'd say what contributes to this femininity is the following:

Lots of water in the 1st house, especially the Moon and Venus, which are exactly conjunct. I have a late Libra ASC and a late Cancer MC.

Plutonian - you must be a chick magnet though. I've found that men with these types of aspects seem to attract women and make them feel extremely comfortable...must be nice!

MVM, it's a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, it does encourage a very easy relationship towards women because I can listen and be emotionally supportive. On the negative side, I can be emotionally supportive and this instantly draws women with very large self-esteem problems to me.

Libra Rising men, I find kind be quite charming in that soft venus way. Their voices tend to be pleasing bu definately not on the manly side. The complaint I have about this rising sign in men, in my experience...is the gender/ role issue. THey like to tread into woman's territory...some women think its cool...I dont. Im a bit a female cheavanist sow.

my opinion:

feminine men usually have their venus in libra, or a preponderance of libra planets.

masculine women usually have sun or mars in fire signs, first aries, then sag, then leo.

Yeah, I had a Libra boyfriend with Libra rising AND with Libra Venus...he wasn't feminine at all. Nothing soft about him. I can't remember his house placements, wish I did.
I don't find Libra feminine, I find it idealistic and on the hunt for beauty. Taurus feels more feminine to me in a cuddly way for boys.

I forgot my ex-husband, a Pisces rising. He definitely gave off the girly vibe.

Libra is cuddly, not feminine.

Neptune to the asc/Pisces rising/strong Neptune in one's chart

None of my Libra rising exes were cuddly. And there were a number of them. They weren't really physically affectionate. They were romantics, though. Hardcore romantics - a nice dinner and wine and candlelight.

Plutonian, do you consider yourself cuddly? I have to get to the bottom of this! I think I may've had a defective batch when I was in my 20's!!!

Cuddly, eh? Damn, that came out of left-field! Yeah, to a certain extent I'd say I'm cuddly, but I'm no teddy bear!

Cancer anything will give any guy 'soft' or other feminine characteristics. I had two co-workers as a perfect example, they both had cancer suns just like moi. One was gay and the other was straight. The gay cancer guy was a bit metro and someone I could talk to about almost anything, almost like a best gf at work. He was clearly more at ease with himself than the straight one, I'm not even trying to be stereotypical but thats how it was. The straight cancer was as catty as the majority of the females I worked with and I couldn't stand him.But at the same time, he tried sooo hard to assert himself as the stereotypical 'rough guy' so typical around where I live now. Its weird. O__o

All in all, from my experiences I do think cancer, libra or pisces influence will lend some softness to a male. It won't neccesarily make them completely effeminite, but yeah.....

Plutonian, yeah, the teddy bear factor I feel more strongly with a Taurus rising or even Cancer rising males

Dulce, you're right about Libras, Pisces and Cancer men. Especially the Cancer guys, I've noticed.

I wonder about 'masculine' women or women with a masculine air about them. I have Mars in the first conjunct the ascendant, and that should show some kind of 'masculine' trait.... but it's in Taurus along with my Taurus rising, so that's feminine. I'm not as sturdy as I should be with that rising sign, so I have no idea .
Maybe a fire Mars in conjunct a fire ascendant?

I do get along awfully well with men for the most part, though. I think the Mars aspect really might contribute.

I've been told by an astrologer that I'm a masculine girl (not by looks -- I'm thin, almost fragile) and people I know online often assume I'm a guy.
6 of my planets are in masculine signs (including a Sag Sun), 4 in feminine, though I wouldn't really call Scorpio and Capricorn feminine.

Perhaps because opposites attract I'm attracted to guys with feminine traits; the "artsy type" guys.

Esp if in a water sign and in a water house.

For a woman,Aries in particular and the moon in conj or hard asp to mars/uranus in one of the angular houses.

A feminine guy friend of mine has 7 planets in feminine signs and 2 on the cusp between masculine and feminine. His asc is either Leo or Cancer (birth time is known only approximately) but I guess it's Cancer.

Most guys like him aren't the "magnet" types though. He complained to me that most girls look at him only as a friend.

He has 7 retrograde planets, btw.

I am definitely more feminine than usual.

I am a feminine male to the point that I have been mistaken for being gay. I have been called "fag","faggot" numerous times since freshman year of high school. I have definitely been viewed as being sissy in childhood, and so I attracted a lot of bullies.

I have a high pitched voice, and very softspoken. I have been told numerous times that I sound like Michael Jackson. I have been told stuff like "You sound like a b-tch" and been accused of being gay because of it. In yahoo chatrooms, my talking on the microphone led to be being accused of being gay, being called "faggot" and that I take it up the butt. Stuff like that is not true, and it really hurt my feelings and embarassed me. I prefer typing than speaking when communicating in chatrooms to avoid any more situations like that.

My facial features tend to be more on the feminine side, and so I have been mistakened for being gay because of this. One guy in the navy told me straight up "You look like a fag"

A femininity about me is more apparent when when I had long hair, especially it being curly and no beard..especially if I go clean shaven.

I think that I look more masculine when my hair is short and I have a beard.

I think that it could be my high feminine sign influence combined with Neptune

My Sun in Scorpio
Mercury in Scorpio parallel Neptune
Venus in Scorpio parallel Neptune
My Moon in Pisces square Neptune
My Ascendant in Virgo
Mars square Neptune

my Mercury conjunct/parallel Venus in Scorpio in 3rd for the sweet sounding voice

I also read in a psychological astrology book by Betty Lundsted that a male with all the big 3 (Sun,Moon, and Ascendant) in feminine signs could have strong feminine traits and be insecure about their masculinity...especially connected to the mother being the more dominating influence That's all true in my case....especially only knowing my mother and not my father.

I also believe that my Sun trine Moon with 2'10 orb, and my Sun conjunct the true lunar apogee(aka True Black Moon Lilith) with 22 minutes of arc which means that my Sun aspects not only the moon, but its apogee means that I can strongly identify with the feminine. This can help me relate to females. I am a believer in gender equality and women's rights. I do consider myself a feminist.

Veteran Affairs Hormone testing showed that I do have high levels of estrogen and lower than average levels of testosterone. I also have highly feminine finger ratios(my index fingers are longer than my ring fingers)which indicate exposing to more estrogen in my mom's womb.

I want to reiterate that just because a male has feminine traits doesn't mean that he is gay. I also want to reiterate that just because a female has masculine traits doesn't mean that she is a lesbian. I see those erroneous perceptions are pervasive in our society, and they are believed by many people of both genders. It does lead to many misunderstandings, prejudice, and mistreatment. I think stereotypes hurt a lot of people.

I do believe my experiences helped me to believe in gay rights and sympathize with their cause including the right to marry the ones that they love even if they are the same gender as them.

btw....Winona Ryder is my birthdate twin,
and I read that she had a history of being mistakened for a gay boy and being picked on because of it.

That reminds me of something, Glaucus - an astrologer friend of mine told me not so long ago that our rising, sun, and moon are usually made up of feminine/feminine/masculine or masculine/masculine/feminine signs - either way, it's a combo of both, but in some cases people do have triple masculine or triple feminine of that trio and it does make a difference in how people 'view' a person.

A good friend of mine is a double Taurus/Cancer rising and he gets perceived as feminine all the time, as more receptive than he really is. People really underestimate him (especially with that Cancer rising, he's got an extremely emotionally animated face).

I did have a female friend who was a Libra rising Leo, with a moon in Aries. People viewed her as very aggressive despite her Libra rising. So it would seem there is some truth to the theory.

I wonder about astrohereditary

My Mom has Ascendant,Mercury,Venus,Jupiter, and Uranus in Cancer
She has Moon and Saturn in Scorpio
She has Mars in Capricorn

so she has 7 planets in feminine signs(6 of them in watersigns),and her Ascendant is in feminine signs(in a watersign)

my father had

Sun,Mercury in Capricorn
Moon in Pisces
Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus in Taurus (Jupiter,Saturn are stationary)
Stationary Neptune in Virgo
so he had 7 planets in feminine signs.
from what my mom told me,he didn't fit traditional male stereotypes with his being highly sensitive emotional, and very softspoken(even more so than me)

my maternal grandfather had

Sun,Pluto in Cancer
Moon,Saturn in Pisces (Saturn is stationary)
Jupiter,Ascendant in Scorpio
Neptune in Virgo

so he has all of the big 3(Sun,Moon,Ascendant) in feminine signs(all water signs)
He had 6 planets in feminine signs, and ascendant in a feminine sign.

he wasn't feminine in an apparent way,and he would be kinda macho too(I think it was more out of hiding behind a shell to protect his highly sensitive nature), but he could express feminine traits when he is vulnerable or when he is being nurturing.......especially when he chose to keep my mother when my maternal grandmother wanted to put my mom up for adoption. Unlike my maternal grandmother,he wanted his child, and wasn't going to give her up. That's why mom grew up knowing her father, but never knew her mother who disappeared without a trace. That's an example of that some males can be more nurturing than some females.

my maternal grandmother had

Sun,Mars,Uranus in Aries
Venus,Saturn in Aquarius
Jupiter in Libra
so she had 6 planets in masculine signs

she and my grandfather were only meant to be together for a very brief time to bring my mom into the world.

my grandfather found his soulpartner in another woman, married her,and had 4 children with her. He was married to her for 40 years until his suicide in 1998. He was my stepgrandmother's first and only guy that she's ever been with. She met him when she was 13,and he was 19.....not long after he came back from Korea and kept my mom who was a baby at the time.

so like me, my mom was born from a short relationship, never knowing the other parent that disappeared without a trace.

I plan to cut that chain. I want to meet a woman and be with her for the rest of my life and for my children to know both their parents. I plan to stay in my children's lives. Only death will keep me apart from them. I wish that their mother will be like that too. I don't want them to grow up not knowing their mothers. I believe that not knowing one's mother is a lot worse than not knowing one's father because of the strong physical attachment from being in your mom's womb. I am a person that loves and cares about children, and I know that I would be very nurturing to my own children, especially with my strong feminine traits.
