What's His Rising Sign?
If you know your partner's time of birth, as well as his date of birth, then you can look up his Rising Sign. It describes his image, his appearance, and his outer packaging. The real man could be quite different, of course. But this is the version of himself, that the world sees, when it looks at him for the first time!
Look Him Up Here!
Does he have Pisces Rising? Look for a sensitive face with eyes that look as if they could be moved to tears by poetry, or at least by a steady stream of Nag Champa incense. Some of them even have eyes like pools, and when you are holding hands across a crowded speed-dating table, it may be easy to imagine you can hold your nose and just dive in.
All this is no reflection of the person behind the mask, of course. Lots of them just look vulnerable, even though they are secretly power mad or outrageously well organised. I have never met a Pisces Rising man who actually appeared to be living in the real world, however. When you speed date or chat online, you are less likely to be talking about work, money, mortgages and kids and far more likely to be pursuing something which fascinates him and inspires his imagination. There is usually a strong element of fantasy about the reality of Pisces Rising, and even two minutes into a speed-dating session you may get the distinct impression that he’s not really here – or at least, not here in the same way as the rest of us.
There is typically something elusive about Pisces Rising. And he needs to be careful when he is drinking or using drugs as well; this is the Rising Sign that disappears with the pixies under the influence of mind-altering substances. A lot of people meet Pisces Rising and ask, ‘Is he for real?’ You will never know unless you look at his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign. At worst, he can seem flaky, at best, fascinating and enchanting.
They are imaginative dressers, and if they have Aquarius or Pisces personal planets, will forget fashion and go off on their own trip. All of them act as if they secretly have J.K. Rowling, Tolkien or Kate Bush tucked under the bed.
He can happily lose himself in a cloud of incense, an old Ravi Shankar album, a bible, a book of mythological tales, or a copy of The Hobbit. He likes the sound of the surf, and the smell of dreams, and he can see the point of out-of-focus photography, or surrealism, fauvism and pointillism.
Drugs (even prescribed drugs) and alcohol can leave him utterly dazed and confused, and a daily reality check is always advisable if he hits the scotch or the sleeping pills. Deep sea diving is probably better for him, in the long run – or dreaming up ever more fantastic colour schemes for the bathroom.
If he has other planets in Pisces, he can occasionally lose touch with the real world altogether, and may have to be dragged back by more practical friends.
There is a little of the bedsit poet in him, no matter how successful he becomes. A lot of his fantasies (sexual or otherwise) relate to water, and he can be lured by champagne in a spa (Austin Powers style) or the seductive appeal of getting naked on a yacht.
Does he have Aquarius Rising? He’ll present himself as a free spirit and, if you’re really lucky, he’ll reveal how one of his school reports or employer assessments described him as socially maladjusted too. He seems mad, exciting, unpredictable, unusual. He has no interest in copying what everyone else is doing or fitting in for a quiet life. At least, that’s the way it seems on the surface. His Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign will quickly reveal if you are dealing with a fake renegade or the real thing.
He appears to be experimental, radically different from the crowd, and quite possibly ahead of his time, and thus he is either electrifying company or a total turn-off – depending on what you’re looking for. Aquarius Rising is so fiercely set aside from the pack that even if he is already on the fringes, he will create his own minority group of one within that world. Gay Aquarius Rising men don’t want to be labelled gay and refuse to stereotype themselves within the community. If he’s an Aquarius Rising jailbird, he may try to create a unique niche for himself within the prison hierarchy – and so on! Andy Gibb, who had Aquarius Rising, was the Bee Gee who wasn’t a proper Bee Gee. There is often a sense that you are dating a maverick, a misfit, an oddball, a rebel or a renegade with this Rising Sign. It all depends on how well his life is going at the time and how happy he feels.
Fate puts him in group situations where he fails to fit in, and he may spend a fair bit of time talking about this on a first date. Is the real man (behind the mask) truly an outsider, though? Look at the whole chart to see if you’re actually seeing the real thing. I once interviewed Guy Pearce, who has Aquarius Rising, and was expecting a Neighbours boy actor clone. I didn’t get it. And a few years later, he was cross-dressing in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Does he have Capricorn Rising? He always seems grounded, down to earth and sensible – even when he’s trying to be really weird and interesting. Whatever his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign, Capricorn Rising always appears to have his feet solidly planted on the ground. He seems ambitious too. He either wants to make it to the top or he’s already on his way.
This one seems awfully serious. When his face is relaxed, it tends to look slightly grim. On the plus side, he often uses this deadpan expression to make his jokes funnier. As they age, they can become craggy, and you may notice a slight Easter Island statue vibe in photographs!
Capricorn Rising gives the impression that he is in it for the long haul too – particularly in his career, but also in his relationships. There is a tremendous sense of permanence and Eveready battery reliability about Capricorn Rising, as if once he has planted himself somewhere he is never actually going to go away. This Ascendant makes a man seem solid, immovable, hard to shake – and impossible to distract. A steady gaze and a solid pair of boots are often his trademark.
Capricorn Rising always seems as if he’s been around a bit, even when he’s young. When he’s on a downer, though, he can project so much darkness (and take himself so seriously) that you may want to consider emigrating to somewhere (or someone) sunnier. Men who dislike Capricorn Rising (usually for his naked ambition) tend to criticise him on the basis that he spends far too long gazing at his own belly button or inhabiting the Extremely Important World of Me. It’s just an image though, and the real man – as shown by his entire horoscope – may take himself far less seriously than at first appearance. He looks and talks like someone who worries about the state of the world, and he does. A mature approach to politics, even in his teens or twenties, is also a Capricorn Rising trademark.
Does he have Sagittarius Rising? It’s common to find Sagittarius Rising men who are extremely tall or noticeably short. They also come in Very Fat. It’s not inevitable, but it happens often enough to be a giveaway with this sign. Watch out if he’s in a career where he is allowed to go over the top (music, acting, dressing up as a gorillagram.) He will take full advantage of this, and you will see the results in his online photographs. Sagittarius Rising does big hair, big hats, big tattoos, big earrings, big shoes – whatever it takes to make a large impression.
They come across as philosophers, travellers, explorers and adventurers. There is nothing narrow minded or small town about the image, although once you explore his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and/or Venus sign, you may well find that the man behind the mask is a great deal more insecure or nervous about the big wide world than he admits.
Sagittarius Rising is a sexy package to put on show, because we live in the age of Internet friendship, Buddha in the bookshops, Grey Nomads and Brit Backpackers. Consequently, online (or in speed-dating situations) the Sag Rising male will play this card for all it’s worth, emphasising the last time he was in Italy (as opposed to the last time he was playing pool in the local pub) and focusing on his beliefs, his outlook, his politics, his worldview, his ‘global chap’ persona.
His greatest asset is probably his richly developed sense of humour. If one or more personal planets are also in Sagittarius (or amusing Gemini) then you may have an amateur or pro comedian on your hands.
He is attracted to intelligent lovers who are talkers, thinkers, texters and e-mailers. He is possibly one of the few men on the planet who professes to find lady novelists attractive. Sagittarius Rising sees the big picture, tends to have a job where he has to be fixated on the tiny details, and has either travelled widely or longs to.
Does he have Scorpio Rising? Penetrating, powerful eyes are the first giveaway with this Rising Sign. There is usually a direct gaze that looks as if it’s piercing your very soul, and it can be unnerving.
It’s common to find Scorpio Rising men playing the strong, silent type – and it’s very sexy.
He’ll have one big passion in his life, even an obsession. Scorpio Rising is always a fan or a crusader of some kind. You’ll find that his chosen passion is central to his being, and permeates everything from his choice of holiday destination to his attitude towards money, lovers and career. His private life is his private life, though, so don’t ask questions. He will typically be open about what he chooses to divulge and unbelievably closed about the stuff he prefers to bury.
Lots of people find him intense, although his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign will tell you the true story. What is most fascinating about Scorpio Rising is his tendency to project himself as a major player – even when his job or status seems fairly lowly in the scheme of things. He can seem sharp, even deadly, in initial conversations and if he has any of the personal planets in the formidable signs (Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn) then he may be genuinely intimidating. There may also be power plays or manipulation in the conversation, e.g. an attitude that suggests ‘tell me all your secrets but don’t expect me to divulge any of mine’, coupled with a hypnotic gaze.
Scorpio Rising is usually painted as sex on a stick by astrologers. After carefully perusing many of them, I have to conclude that no matter what they look like they all give off beddable vibes. Scorpio Rising men are sexy, even when you know for a fact they haven’t changed their underpants for three days. Scorpio Rising men also have a way of making you wonder what they’d look like naked, or what they’d be like in the sack – most disconcerting if the man in question is also your ageing boss!
Libra Rising men are loaded with charm. This man is easy to like – at least on the outside. What’s inside could be more revealing, but on the surface he is usually Mr Popularity. He is genuinely interested in his mirror reflection and typically puts enormous energy into his hair, his facial hair (if he has any), his suits, his ties, his shoes and his man bag.
Other men with different Rising Signs struggle to be adored, and often get it wrong, but Libra Rising doesn’t even have to try. He may be blessed with a fashionable face or a wonderful, easy listening voice – Nature usually equips him with the tools he needs to get people on side.
This can be a kissy-kissy Rising Sign; when you meet, get ready to submit both cheeks at once. Women gravitate towards Libra Rising because he expresses his female side so well. It is not unusual for straight women to mistake them as gay – and the gay Libra Rising men never have to be asked twice to get into a frock. The straight ones love pink, leopard skin, fancy fabric suits, ‘interesting’ shoes and exfoliating with Clinique scruffing lotion. I know one who gads around in suspenders at parties and another who dons lycra leggings on stage.
Whatever he’s like on the inside, Libra Rising is always loved – and lovable – which can be disastrous if you are with an old charmer who is a secret arms dealer. Even the absolute ******** (and there are a few) have a manner that suggests their only desire in life is to have perfect harmony; dinner with Libra Rising tends to be full of polite little murmurs of agreement, and impeccable door-opening and salt-passing abilities.
When in love, Libra Rising goes completely mad and unleashes the kind of heavily romantic behaviour usually seen in BBC costume dramas on a Sunday night. Cue ballads, vases of roses, fine wine and blazing log fires.
Does he have Virgo Rising? If his health is an embarrassment to him, he’ll skip any mention of his body/lifestyle/gym/eating preferences/drinking habits altogether, so you will be left wondering if he actually has a body at all. Lots of them find their illness, allergies, delicate constitution or medical condition is the first thing others notice about them – and the first thing they see when they look in the mirror. Consequently, body talk gets censored. After all, who wants to speed date someone whose most obvious characteristic is his ailing immune system!
The other kind of Virgo Rising bloke is far more common. This one goes on (and on) about his dislike of smoking, his preference for non-GM foods, his loyalty to organic farmers, his food intolerance recipe books, his passion for the gym (or yoga, or running, or daily swims) and…you get the picture. His body is his calling card.
The physical influences the mental and the spiritual to a heavy degree. He’ll seem intelligent, methodical, analytical, perfectionist in his member profile or in his approach to a date. Some of them can appear twitchy and neurotic, like David Byrne on speed, or John Cleese playing Basil Fawlty, or Derek Jacobi blinking his way through I Claudius.
All of them appear to be talkers, thinkers or writers. Gemini is on the Midheaven with this Rising Sign. It’s their mission in life to communicate, and some of them find careers or vocational interests where they do this full time.
This man will come across as a perfectionist, a brainbox, and someone for whom work comes first. He may wear his long hours (or his striving for perfect results) in the lines on his face. At first sight, he’ll seem well read, literate, sharp, rather fussy or choosy, and above all, practical. As you get to know him better through his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign, you’ll have more to think about, but on the surface this is a reader and an e-mailer – and an appealing neurotic.
Does he have Leo Rising? A lot of them look like Shakespearean kings or princes. Is it the hair, the jawline or the beard? No matter if they have masses of curls – or even a shiny bald head – they still manage to look impressive. If you drive past a bus queue in the rain and turn your head twice to look at someone in the line, it’s probably Leo Rising.
He’ll present himself as a leader, a mover, a shaker, a captain, a king, a top dog or his own boss (no matter what he’s actually like on the inside or what he does for a living). This Rising Sign also stands tall – as if he is about to have a medal pinned on him by the Queen – and even the short ones sit up straight in their chairs and always seem in complete control of any situation. What he’s like on the inside is a matter for you to find out as his Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars sign may be remarkably different to his Leo exterior. The typical Leo Rising image is dignified and classy, though – he knows how to behave, ******* it, and he seldom has to try too hard to win other people’s respect (and even their unquestioning worship).
Leo Rising always behaves as if he has the unconditional acceptance of a large and loyal fan base, and is astonished if he ever receives evidence to the contrary. Look for quiet confidence, occasional displays of outrageous arrogance, and a Cheshire Cat grin or smug smile that suggests Leo Rising is the cat that just found all the King Island double cream.
When they have to speak at weddings or at large meetings they draw themselves up and behave like stars. They are all show-offs and are good at dramatising themselves, so if speed dating or online chatting, prepare for an impressive performance. It’s common for them to upgrade their social class by emphasising the right vowels in their accent, or the ‘right’ school or street too.
When he's laying down the law with friends, family or colleagues you may get the distinct impression you are dealing with Louis XIV. Even people who don't know him particularly well sense that they are in the company of a head-tosser, a foot-stamper and a world-class sulk, which is why so many people go out of their way to avoid arguments with him.
Does he have Cancer Rising? If his family made him miserable, you’ll soon hear about it. And if they are his best friends and he rings them every day? You’ll hear about that too. Where Cancer Rising goes, his family or background follows. He seems caring, and genuinely concerned about people – even a bit of a Gooey Louis. The eyes may be a bit moist or the features may be slightly soft. Cancer Rising comes across like a hugger or a cuddler rather than an action man. He appears to be sensitive in a way in which men are not normally allowed to be, and is normally good at talking about his feelings. What lies beneath the mask is another matter, of course, but Cancer Rising is good at projecting the image of someone with a developed EQ.
It’s common to find them projecting a stereotyped local/national/class image. The East Enders keep their accents for life, even if they become middle class and move to the West End. The New Yorkers can seem outrageously ‘Noo Yawk’, in a clichéd way. The Cancer Rising men from New Delhi bang on about their favourite curry restaurants, and those from Melbourne often present themselves as AFL fans, complete with stripy scarves.
Cancer Rising brings a little bit of his home, family or background with him when he is projecting himself into the big, wide world. If you get beyond the first couple of dates or long e-mails, you will get the family background at some point – or the past. He draws a straight line between the present and what happened in 1970 or 1985 or 1992.
Women gravitate towards Cancer Rising because they sense someone who will share emotions and become involved in the touchy-feely side of the relationship. Is he really that sensitive, though? Look at the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars in the rest of his chart to work out who you’re really with.
Quick, clever and curious on the surface, this man has a lighter-than-light quality that lets him slip in and out of dating situations more easily than most. Typically, he’ll be full of questions too – you won’t be stuck with one of those tediously boring ‘enough of me, let’s talk about me’ dates! Look for intelligent eyes, and a way with words. Sometimes a pair of glasses emphasises the brainy image too. His speed-dating banter or online write-up will probably be wittier or more impressive than that of other men.
He is a clearing-house for information, gathered from friends, the Internet, the radio, the television, magazines and newspapers. There is nothing plodding about Gemini Rising. They are often described as bright and chirpy, and there may well be something birdlike about his quick movements, or even his beak! Only you can decide if you are dealing with a rooster, a pigeon or a budgie though.
This man looks as if he lives in his head, and he probably does. His career or ambitions typically revolve around a lot of demanding brainwork, as Virgo rules his Midheaven. Consequently, stress and a wired nervous system can sometimes seem to get in the way of his peace of mind. If you meet a Gemini Rising who is over-breathing, talking too fast, or fidgeting or smoking himself into a frenzy, then you have met one who has decided to live in his head, rather than his body, and he may be paying the price.
They seem forever young, always interested – and interesting. At worst, they can also seem horribly lightweight and, on some level, far too wedded to their heads to have much grunt in the trouser department. The rest of the chart will reveal what this man is really made of, though. But on first impression, you may well conclude that you are speaking to Kylie in underpants. His age (permanently) is about twenty-seven.
Does he have Taurus Rising? There are two kinds of Taurus Rising men. The first group is eccentric, and radical Their values are so important to them that they are prepared to put up with anything (being broke, being unpopular in order to pursue their goals. The other type of Taurus Rising man is far more common, however, and he projects two things in his speed dating or online dating. One is his lifestyle and the other is his salary. This breed of Taurus Rising is less interested in playing the outsider or the oddball, and far more drawn to designer clothing, expensive cars and watches, and investment portfolios. You will instantly know which one you are with, as Richie Rich Taurus Rising tends to have expert restaurant knowledge (and spends ages looking at the bill) whereas Free Spirit Taurus Rising will always suggest unusual or alternative (i.e. cheap) places to meet.
Once you get to know Free Spirit better, you will hear a lot about a huge family or career issue which put all his values on the line and forced him to commit to life on the fringes, or a career path or personal life that has forced him to stand on the outside looking in. With Richie Rich Taurus Rising, there may also be considerable chat about his career – and, inevitably, a moaning session about the impossibility of pursuing his dreams while also earning enough to pay off the mortgage. In both cases, his values are what drive him, at least on the surface. Look at the Sun, and particularly Venus, for the Inner Man!
Aries Rising? Meet Mr Tough! He seems to be wearing a leather jacket all the time, even if he’s not. Stubble, hard heads and rock-like skulls are common. Aries Rising does not look like a softie.
This man can also come across as Mr Angry, although the object of his anger will change, depending on the signs his personal planets (the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars) are in. He looks uncannily at ease with a sword in his hand – or a rifle. Other Rising Signs drop their weaponry at fancy dress parties – not Aries Rising, who can become quite carried away by his costume.
He may seem competitive to you too (and it may come out in his list of hobbies or interests or in what he tells you about his working life). To spot Aries Rising in a queue, just push in front of him. If he thumps you over the head with a copy of Reader's Digest, then you'll know his ascendant is ruled by Mars.
The image is deeply male and rather driven. No matter what size or shape Aries Rising is in, he also gives off the kind of vibe that suggests you would be insane to mess with him. Not surprisingly, there is often a serious fight tucked away in his adolescent past – or he may be constantly battling his own aggressive tendencies, if he is stressed and strung out on drugs or alcohol.
Lots of them look sporty and get around in trainers or logo-adorned gear. All of them have a weakness for hard, dirty denim. If they are forced to wear ballet tights, they will be very tight, and jet black. When left to his own devices, the English Aries Rising man gives off a vibe which says, “They wanted to audition me for a Brut commercial, but I was too hard for them.” The Australians project Paul Hogan, circa 1975. And the Americans project an unholy combination between Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan.
Aries Rising does this, even when he is sitting quietly in the corner reading a library book. Look for the twitching leg, though. They all have it. Every minute of the day, some corner of their being is ready to move.
Here's another perfect place to spot Aries Rising man – the crash-induced traffic jam. Look for a red car, or one with a big bumper, or a family-sized assault wagon. Alternatively, look for a motorbike that looks like a truck. Then watch Aries Rising jam the horn, thump his fist on top of the roof, or yell abuse at the idiot up at the front, who dared to crash his car in the first place.
Aries Rising projects an image which is impatient to get on with life, and intolerant of bores, time-wasters, drifters and wannabes. Just remember, you cannot really get the whole picture until you've seen his other planet signs too. Is he all Aries, or just faking it?
Aries Rising gets straight to the point and is refreshingly direct. For this reason, speed dating with them will almost seem like warp speed dating and you may get asked for a shag immediately at the end of it.
