Very sad indeed, but it does confirm what I have thought all along about this country: we give lip-service to liberty, equality, and brotherhood, but in reality America is still a xenophobic, racist, bigoted nation at its core.

NO, I DO NOT HATE THIS COUNTRY. REPEAT I DO NOT HATE THIS COUNTRY! I just think that if we have such ideals, we should truly live up to them. If we are to have liberty and justice for all, shouldn't we be extending such a notion to everyone, not just those who we think deserve it???

It doesn't surprise me. I COULD mention some weaknesses with that survey, but I think--by coincidence--that it's close enough to true.

Not sure about "to the core," though maybe. Not even Obama believes in full equality for all people.

'Course, racist attitudes aren't just restricted to whites (nor are whites the only ones to have members hostile to the idea of a black president). I recently experienced it myself, as well as witnessing other forms of racism. I see (& experience) just as much racism and such in California as I ever did in Texas. I could muse on why this is, but I don't really know what the problem is.

You sure were right Dervish. It's been a 24/7 constant drumbeat of misogynist statements coming off the O'Bomber campaign and the loons who have been drinking the O'Bomber Kook-Aid.

It's also the O'Bomber campaign and those members of the "in the bag for O'Bomber press" who have been attempting to play the "race card" in this election. Even here, there are those whose every waking thought and statements have a racial component..if not wholly racial in content.

Of course, these same people conveniently overlook the fact that O'Bomber has surrounded himself during his adult life and still today..with those who are themselves racists and anti-Semitic. People like the Reverrrrrrend Wright, Samatha Powers, Louis Farrakhan, Michael Phleger, a so called Catholic priest, the Reverrrend Cone, various and sundry so called foreign policy experts who despise Israel and of course, the domestic terrorist bomber and his bomber wife...the Ayers.

Poll shows gap between blacks and whites over racial discrimination

WASHINGTON (AP) — Since the nation's birth, Americans have discussed race and avoided it, organized neighborhoods and political movements around it, and used it to divide and hurt people even as relations have improved dramatically since the days of slavery, Reconstruction and legal segregation.

Now, in what could be a historic year for a black presidential candidate, a new Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll, conducted with Stanford University, shows just how wide a gap remains between whites and blacks.

It shows that a substantial portion of white Americans still harbor negative feelings toward blacks. It shows that blacks and whites disagree tremendously on how much racial prejudice exists, whose fault it is and how much influence blacks have in politics.
