Whenever evil befalls us, we ought to ask ourselves, after the first suffering, how we can turn it into good. So shall we take occasion, from one bitter root, to raise perhaps many flowers.

Leigh Hunt (1784 - 1859)

Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come.

"Life is a work of art, designed by the one who lives it."

~don't remember, had it scribbled on an envelope in my purse from a gift certificate I got in November... might have thought it, might have heard it, read it, might have seen it somewhere, might have been a song lyric... I just don't know, guess it doesn't matter

~ by God

I like it. A lot.

Adrienne, your quotes reminded me of one of my favorite quotes and inspired me to locate my quote notebook. Here it is, I don't know who first wrote it/said it.

"A woman is usually comfortable in following masculine leadership if her man is loving, gentle, and worthy of her respect."

Here is another of my old favorites for everyone that applies to recent LL situations:

"Always forgive your enemies - nothing annoys them so much."
~Oscar Wilde

and in a much more lovely tone:

"Forgiveness is the fragrance of the violet that clings fast to the heel that crushed it."
~George Roemisch

I love those, Melody.

"Most great men and women are not perfectly rounded in their personalities, but are instead people whose one driving enthusiasm is so great it makes their faults seem insignificant."

I love quotes... concise, beautiful, "mental writing" that conveys more in a few lines than some authors are cabable of conveying in an entire book.

Each perfect quote is like a brief, bright channel of pure insight and pure God/Force.

"One's first step in wisdom is to question everything - and one's last is to come to terms with everything."

Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Life is a train of moods like a string of beads; and as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses, which paint the world their own hue, and each shows us only what lies in its own focus.

Ramona L. Anderson:

People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within.

Rebecca West:

Did St. Francis really preach to the birds? Whatever for? If he really liked birds he would have done better to preach to the cats.

Robert Redford:

Health food may be good for the conscience but Oreos taste a hell of a lot better.

Samuel Goldwyn:

You've got to take the bitter with the sour.

Spinoza:

Peace is not the absence of war; it is a virtue; a state of mind; a disposition for benevolence; confidence; and justice.

Thomas Fuller:

No garden is without its weeds.

Thomas Merton:

Do not depend on the hope of results. You may have to face the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect. As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself. You gradually struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people. In the end, it is the reality of personal relationship that saves everything.

Thomas Paine:

The sublime and the ridiculous are often so nearly related, that it is difficult to class them separately. One step above the sublime makes the ridiculous, and one step above the ridiculous makes the sublime again.

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

Geniuses are the luckiest of mortals because what they must do
is the same as what they most want to do.

W. H. Auden

Genius - To know without having learned; to draw just conclusions from unknown premises; to discern the soul of things.

Ambrose Bierce

Man as an individual is a genius. But men in the mass form the Headless Monster, a great, brutish idiot that goes where prodded.

Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin

Mediocrity does not see higher than itself. But talent instantly recognizes the genius.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

Calvin Coolidge

What makes men of genius, or rather, what they make, is not new ideas, it is that idea - possessing them - that what has been said has still not been said enough.

Eugene Delacroix

Our observation of nature must be diligent, our reflection profound, and our experiments exact. We rarely see these three means combined; and for this reason, creative geniuses are not common.

Denis Diderot

Genius is present in every age, but the men carrying it within them remain benumbed unless extraordinary events occur to heat up and melt the mass so that it flows forth.

Denis Diderot

Intellectuals solve problems;
geniuses prevent them.

Albert Einstein

The difference between stupidity and genius
is that genius has its limits.

Albert Einstein

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent.
It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage --
to move in the opposite direction.

Albert Einstein

Every man of genius sees the world at a different angle from his fellows, and there is his tragedy.

Henry Havelock Ellis

Crazy people who are productive are geniuses. Crazy people who are rich are eccentric. Crazy people who are neither productive nor rich are just plain crazy. Geniuses and crazy people are both out in the middle of a deep ocean; geniuses swim, crazy people drown. Most of us are sitting safely on the shore. Take a chance and get your feet wet.

Michael J. Gelb

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it now. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Brain researchers estimate that your unconscious database outweighs the conscious on an order exceeding ten million to one. This database is the source of your hidden, natural genius. In other words, a part of you is much smarter than you are. The wise people regularly consult that smarter part.

Michael J. Gelb

A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam that flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his own thought, because it is his. In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a sort of alienated majesty.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Universities are of course hostile to geniuses, which, seeing and using ways of their own, discredit the routine: as churches and monasteries persecute youthful saints.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Genius without education is like silver in the mine.

Benjamin Franklin

A science is any discipline in which the fool of this generation can go beyond the point reached by the genius of the last generation.

Max Gluckman

If we wish to know the force of human genius we should read Shakespeare. If we wish to see the insignificance of human learning we may study his commentators.

William Hazlitt

The first and last thing required of genius is the love of truth.

- Goethe

The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.

- Aldous Huxley

The essence of genius is to know what to overlook.

- William James

Genius means little more than the faculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way.

- William James

A man of genius has been seldom ruined but by himself.

- Samuel Johnson

A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery.

- James Joyce
