Did anyone watch Jessica the Hippo on Animal Planet last night?

Talk about a spoiled baby.

And I thought my dog was spoiled.

This Hippo has it made. The best of both worlds. Her owners just have to make sure she doesn't wander to far, and get shot like her friend Charlie.

Yes! Boy, you missed a good show!

She is so spoiled. To begin with, the couple that found her live in the country in Africa, so she lives at their house, but is free to come and go. She has her own bed/mattress on the front porch. Every night they cover her with a blanket. Each night before bedtime, her human "Mom" gives her aromatheraphy massage all over. She plays/sleeps with the dogs. She eats tons of sweet potatos a day, and dog food. She is supposed to eat lucerne, a grassy lettuce that grows there, but she is spoiled with her "treats" so she doesn't like it much.

Sometimes she goes inside the house. She layed on their bed like a dog would, and it broke.

They have a river out front in their yard so she swims/plays there.

It is just an amazing story.

WOW!!! I am sorry I missed seeing this!

I am finding humor in the thought of this LARGE animal being welcome in the house. How big is she? I'm guessing even if a little one, she is still enormous!

Interesting story Nephthys, thank you for sharing it here

I am sure Animal Planet will play it again. They always repeat shows. You can look it up online or check your local listings.
www.animalplanet.com

Actually, she is smaller than most Hippo's because they feed her so many sweet potato's that she doesn't get enough protein. The Vet told them she needs more grain/grass/lucerne and so they mixed it in with the sweet potatos and she spit it out. (& ate only the sweet potatoes) Then they told her to give her horse feed (like a horse kibble) and they mixed it with the dog food and she refused to eat it.

One of the dogs had puppies and they gave her a puppy and she pretty much licked it to death. It was so cute and sweet. I think the puppy was so scared, not understanding why this huge monster was licking it to death.

Another thing, the Vet said that they really don't know totally what Hippos eat in the wild, since they graze all night long. They do know they eat the lucerne. So the Vet said they go by what Hippo's eat in zoos, which is like hay, a grassy grain.

He really emphasized that she should eat this, especially if they want her to get pregnant someday. But she just is so spoiled with her treats, that she doesn't like it.

Oh, get this, they also give her liters of weak coffee every day. LOL

Their spoiling her with all this stuff, but is it harming her overall health? ... The coffee and junk food.

I know many people who feed their dogs table scraps. But i know that table scraps are a no-no for dogs health wise. I dont feed my dog human food of anysort, well, okay the occasional salmon chunks which is GOOD for them. (their coat, joints etc.) A friend of mine says she feels sorry for her dog that he has to eat the same food daily. Now she has a fat, extremely overweight dog, a beagle at that, and she's wanting advice on what to do .... if she woulda listened to me in the beginning he'd be a healthy young pup. (this dog is so over weight that when he lays sprawled out on his side, say left side, his feet on his right side can't even lay on the ground, they are stuff up in the air.

I know many times people think they are doing good by spoiling their animals, when in fact they are doing more damamge than good. If you wanna spoil your animals, spoil them with LOVE and AFFECTION!!

Yeah, Ang,

Funny you mention your friend's dog, because on animal planet last week they had 2 shows in a row about overweight dogs. The people are either lazy, ignorant, or they are spoiling their dogs, not realizing that they are doing more harm than good.

My dog gets healthy snacks from me such as her favorites; red and green bell peppers, once in awhile an almond or two, rice cakes, and then her Buddy Biscuits which are dog cookies.

Luckily my dog is so active she has a real cute figure, slinky waistline. I would never let my dog get fat.

I think I saw part of it a while back. Did she play with some puppies?
