I love cultures and very much want to chime in on this particular topic:I'm a native of South Africa, but I live in America and I'm a citizen of both nations. My ancestral line on record goes back many centuries primarily in Southern Africa. My father's side originates from the Ndebele and Zulu ethnic groups primarily located in South Africa and in Zimbabwe. My mother's side originates from the Tswana ethnic group primarily located in South Africa and Botswana. Her side of the family is indigenous to Botswana but immigrated over a century ago to South Africa. In my family we all speak Zulu, Se-Sotho, Setswana and Afrikaans. We are our own cultural melting pot of indigenous ethnic groups to Southern Africa.

My family on my mother's side, for the most part, are descended from Swedish settlers, though they originally had a tendency to live outlaw lives and I suspect they came from Sweden to escape legal problems. There are some interesting stories in my family, like I think it was my Granny's uncle who was killed by a posse after him for robbing a bank in either Oklahoma or Louisiana while he was fleeing another posse from robbing another bank in New Mexico. They (my great great uncle and his friends) were even on horses. They didn't hold onto their heritage but assimilated fully into Texas, though family sticks by family. My mom is one of the very few who takes pride in her Swedish heritage for her platinum blonde hair (very rare in my family, though other types of blonde are common) and ice blue eyes, which she says helped in her modeling career. My dad is from Scottish descent, or so I believe based on his features and surname. I don't have much to do with his side of the family at all so I don't know the details. I had a vision of Freya when I was 15, and one theory is that I'm genetically predisposed to gods such as herself. IP: Logged |

I know and speak Zulu and Afrikaans. Growing up in South Africa you're required to take those two languages in school. Specific parts of my family only speak certain languages so I had to pick up Tswana and Sotho along the way. But alas I've spent the second half of my life in America where I had no use for them and got rusty. So to answer your question, conversational Zulu and Afrikaans, barely speakable Tswana and Sotho. But my parents speak them all including English. IP: Logged |

Yeah we settled permanently in the States when I was 13 years old, I'm now in my mid 20s. I had to learn American English because South African English is a bit different. But yeah I lost knowledge of many of my native languages living here. With my mother and god parents we speak a mix of English, Zulu, Sotho and Tswana, but other than that I have no use for those languages unless I'm with my family or in the presence of other South Africans. South Africa is actually second to India with the highest number of official languages, so you understand the complexity of native languages and cultures within cultures. People who don't know about South Africa ask me if I speak African all the time, it's horrible. IP: Logged |

Gotta say, that is really annoying. People ask me if I speak Indian all the time, and my reply is "There is no such language as Indian." Yup, many languages, many religions, many differences in quality of living, and a huge difference between north and south Indians! I gotcha IP: Logged |

To answer for Charmainec, C.T. stands for Kaapstad or Cape Town. We Expat SA'ers like to keep it short and sweet. @Char cool. Cape Towners are so much more laid back than people in Joburg. Here in America I live near the ocean which I prefer. Joburg's to far away from the water, I'd rather live in Durban or Port Elizabeth, even Cape Town if it weren't so busy. But I enjoy the states, I just wish they had more culture. IP: Logged |

CS, I get that a lot too. How does one speak Indian or African? Lol.Yes, CT is much more laid back and there's a holiday feel all year round. What I do miss about SA are the people and as mentioned the culture..certain foods, braais.. I litrally lived by the beach, even worked was located close by. Now all I see are buildings, buildings, buildings and tons of people

many genetic testing showed that the majority of the Lebanese population is of African descent (Kenya in particular!), as well as Yemen tribs (Arab nomads), European decent (from the crusades i presume) but most prominently Phoenician decent u shall now address me as Princess Europa of Phoenicia..

Cancer/Scorpio729 LOL actually, I've been told that I'm quite beautiful, hahah I have to agree as my mother is gorgeous and my father was married 7 times(double pisces) he was quite the charmer and good looking. Terrible husband material though, until he met my mother, he was married to her until the day that he passed. ME~ I have a thread here titled "Charlotte The poems and Riddles that are me" and there are more pics of me and of my children in the thread. I love my heritage!~ IP: Logged |

Can't argue with that, though I never implied that you were ugly! Just wondering what the combo would look like

It does seem like an odd combination, but it works... Whenever I'm asked about my heritage I usually reply, Nordic-Celtic-Native American IP: Logged |

Yes, and I AM that obsessed relative, LOL! I kinda got the bug from my great-aunt, who got it from her father...then I blame my Mars in Virgo in the 6th and Saturn in Scorpio (I'm not sure why, they just sound like good scapegoats! :P) Paternal side (so far, what I've discerned from much research): *Polish *Ukranian *Belorussian *& more relatives that were "Russian" before the Empire broke up so....::shrugs:: Maternal side: *English *Irish *Scottish *Holland Dutch (why they differentiate, I'm not sure) *French IP: Logged |
