I believe there is a deep spiritual connection between the nodes and the declinations. Both deal in the more spiritual aspects of a chart and relate possibly to past lives. Specifically work that was done in a past life that can be of benefit now (parallel) and work that, if done, can lead to enormous growth and depth (contraparallel).

Parallels in a chart are very powerful and akin to the south node. These are areas which are fully developed but will not lead to growth. They have an ease of use which literally takes no effort. They are ready to be used right away and will work for you. This is in contrast to the conjunction which is being developed in this life and definitely has a harder, more challenging/triggering feel.

The parallel is already developed and can be used but on its own will not break new ground. It is a supporting factor and can be a potential lazy spot. Just like the south node. This doesnt mean they should be ignored or neglected. They exist to serve larger purposes or other major areas in the chart.

For instance, if someone has moon parallel saturn - they will have an easy time controlling their emotions. This can aid a moon square neptune aspect, for instance which would make the person prone to spiritual despair, tests of faith or lack of emotional clarity. The moon/saturn parallel will be an enormous help in resolving the moon/neptune issue.

The contraparallel on the other hand - in transit and in the chart points to an area like the north node which starts out by teasing you. You have a sense of the connection and the pull to develop that area - say a sun contraparallel uranus aspect - development of the contraparallel is not fraught with the complications of the opposition and square. That aspect will provide a knowledge of the need and enormous benefit in developing uranian goals but it will require work. It is a positive aspect but does not come with the automatic gifts of the parallel. In a failry short time though - very similar to the way the north node functions - it offers rewards for work done. It is much more linear than "hard" aspects and has alot to do with growing your awareness and spirituality of the area and ways to use the connection over time. It is not directly confronting like the hard aspects. It is an opportunity for growth. Possibly similar to a sextile energy but much deeper and more fundamental and spiritual. The sextile is supportive. The contraparallel is more of a major aspect which can eventually dominate a chart.

It is like the north node in that it is an energy center which starts out small but becomes major over time. That is the way the north node works in relationships. Its never as intense as the south node in synastry at the outset of a relationship. The south node is intense and instant. The north node always requires time and development but ultimately leads to deep spiritual growth and connection. The contraparallel is the same idea.

On a deeper level, the parallels and contraparallels probably relate to the placement of the nodes in a chart. Although this point is more speculative. If the north node is conjunct venus, look at where the contraparallels may aid the development of venus. Perhaps a mars contraparallel juno aspect will feature strongly in the persons life (major sex appeal) and the development of the mars/juno will aid the development of the north node/venus aspect.

I have noticed that the nodes only respond to conjunctions/oppositions and parallels and contraprallels. The latter being particularly strong which suggested an important link to me. They do not respond to squares, trines and other aspects. They point forward and backward, not sideways. They are clear and unambiguous and function spiritually most of all.

BUCKETRIDER, thanks for posting these thoughts on parallels/contraparallels. To be honest: I am dealing with astrology for more than 12 years now, but I never gained a substantial understanding of these two factors. It is all so ... mathematical and maybe difficult to understand when you speak a different language.

I understand it this way: All the Nodes-aspects to any planet or angle or other point in your chart don't matter? (Conjunctions/oppositions would be the exception.) Are obsolete? A neglectable quantity???

But then, ANY parallel/contraparallel between two planets or points in your chart would be linked with the Nodes naturally? Did I get that right?

The only astro-programme available to me, that shows the parallels etc. is Solarfire. I looked up the parallels in my chart:

Sun - parallel - Mercury
Sun - parallel - Mars
Mercury - parallel - Mars
Venus - parallel - South Node
Venus - parallel - Pallas
Venus - parallel - BM Lilith
Jupiter - parallel - North Node
Saturn - parallel - Pluto
Chiron - parallel - P.o. Fortune
Juno - parallel - South Node

How can I interprete these? I mean: My Venus is conjunct my SN anyway - what's the difference between conjunct and/or parallel SN??? Also, my Juno is sextiling my North Node - but now I see, it is parallel my SN, at the same time???

I am also worried a bit about my Saturn parallel my Pluto? Good or bad?

And how can it be ... My Jupiter forms no "regular" aspect to my Nodes - but is parallel my NN ... Sounds promising, haha! But .. I don't understand.

Additional question: How would you apply the "parallel"-factor to Synastry?

http://www.cafeastrology.com/declinations_parallels.html

"For those of you who use the software at Astrodienst.com, you can determine the declinations by clicking on their Extended Chart Selection after you've entered both people's birth data. Make sure that both people are selected, and then you can select the chart type, "Synastry Chart (2)". This will bring up a bi-wheel chart. Somewhere near the top, you can click on the link "Click to get the additional tables". You'll come up with planet lists that include declinations for both people (plus an aspect grid) all on one page. Very handy!"

Aaaaaaah - so THIS is what these "additional" tables at astro.com are about! Believe it or not - up until now I didn't know how to read these, what to do with all that additional info. Seems to be quite simple ...;-) (Even though I still don't really understand completely ... but the method seems easy, anyway.) THANKS, ZALA!!!

Okay, one last question please:

How tight (close) would the declinations have to be, to still form a parallel/contraparallel? What's your experience or is there any handy rule?

For example: If one planet's declination is 21.22.19 N - and another planet's decl. is 21.45.04 S - then this is surely is a contraparallel, right? The degrees are only .20 min apart.

BUT: If planet one has 21.22.19 N - and another planet has 23.47.36 N ... would that STILL be a parallel? Or is the difference too large?

How wide can the range be?

Cool thread!

I love my parallels... when l studied Magi before l lost my computer and all my software, l used to look at parallels all the time. They are VERY Poignant.

I use an orb of 1.2

I have
NN parallel moon/venus

in synastry we have:
my NN parallel his NN/Juno/IC/MC
his NN parallel my moon/venus/AC/DC

First experiment with declinations/parallels/contraparallels in Synastry – amazing – that’s a whole new dimension of that Synastry! A whole lot of new “connections” between Planets and asteroids, that don’t aspect each other if only the regular aspects are taken into consideration. But there are also some “contradicitions” to the normal/regular Synastry-aspects.

Parallels – where we got along easily/naturally:

My Sun // his North Node (regular aspect: My Sun semisquare his NN)
My Moon // his Valentine
My Pluto // his P.o. Fortune
My P.o. Fortune // his Mercury
My Vertex // his Jupiter
My Eros // my Name-asteroid in his chart
My Valentine // his Valentine

Contraparallels – where the problems/difficulties/learning curves had been hidden:

My Venus # his Mars
My Saturn # his Neptune (regular aspect also stressful: My Saturn oppos. his Neptune)
My Uranus # his Venus
My Neptune # his Pluto (contrary to regular aspect: My Neptune quintile his Pluto)
My Chiron # his Juno
My P.o. Fortune # his Vertex (regular aspect also stressful: My P.o. Fortune squaring his Vertex)
My Vertex # his BM Lilith
My own Name-asteroid in my chart # his North Node
His Name-asteroid in my chart # his Pluto
His Name-asteroid in my chart # his Psyche (contrary to regular aspect: His Name in my chart trining his Psyche)

Really the final question on this matter (at least for tonight, haha): Do you think these declinations have a stronger impact in Synastry than the usual “aspect-research”??? Lara? Bucketrider? Zala? Others? ;-)

Magi places quite a bit of importance on parallels and contra-parallels in synastry. They display them in the CAC:

Like Lara, I would only allow a very small orb for these aspects, definitely no more than 2 degrees.

Magi Astrology Definition For:

Declinations - The vertical coordinate (or location) of the planets. The declination of a planet is the distance, in degrees, north or south of the Celestial Equator. The Sun's declination varies between about 23.5 degrees north to 23.5 degrees south declination. The change in declination is caused by the tilt of the Earth as it revolves around the Sun.

Parallel - An aspect in the declinations made between two planets that are in the same degree declination, and also on the same side of the celestial equator.

Contra-parallel - An aspect in the declinations made between two planets that are in the same degree of declinations, but with the two planets on different sides of the celestial equator.

The magi-astrology uses Western charts, their way to draw them is just different. but the placements of the planets are the same as in the usual charts on astro.com. The strange line or wave in the middle of their chart is their declination-chart.They use both, longitudes and declinations, to determine aspects, but they say parallels and contraparallels are like conjunctions (usually contraparallels are seen as oppositions).

Here are some sample interps from a synastry report a friend sent me:

Geo Declination Synastry Aspects
--------------------------------------------------

[SUN CONTRA-PARALLEL YOUR JUNO]
Linkage: ROM/R= +130. SEX/R= +130. CMPT/R= +125. JUNO LINKAGE. Increases chances the two of you will become lovers. Normally, a couple needs the presence of a Juno Linkage or else they are unlikely to ever become intimate, regardless of what other linkages they have. Most Juno Linkages significantly augment sexual attraction. But compared to other Juno Linkages, this Juno Linkage enhances sexual attraction only mildly. Nonetheless this linkage is powerful in setting the stage for the two of you to become lovers because it has powers beyond attraction and desire. It changes the circumstances and conditions of your lives such that it is more likely the two of you will become lovers.

[MERCURY CONTRA-PARALLEL YOUR JUPITER]
Linkage: ROM/R= +80. SEX/R= +65. CMPT/R= +180. PERFECT COMMUNICATION LINKAGE. This is one of the best linkages at enhancing compatibility. Very powerful in helping the two of you to exchange viewpoints, communicate peacefully, patiently and articulately, understand each other and reach agreements and fair compromises. This linkage greatly helps the two of you to overcome your differences in other areas. It also significantly builds trust. Perhaps best of all, this linkage helps the two of you to jointly achieve what each of you cannot accomplish by yourself. Together, you look like geniuses.

[MOON CONTRA-PARALLEL YOUR SATURN]
CLASH: ROM/R= -80. SEX/R= -80. CMPT/R= -70. SATURN CLASH. This is a very bad Saturn Clash even though you are the Saturn Person. The normal result of this clash is that you are just not happy with this person and tend to criticize almost everything he/she does. Usually, it does not take long before this would be unbearable for both of you.

[JUPITER PARALLEL YOUR MARS]
Linkage: ROM/R= +60. SEX/R= +70. CMPT/R= +165. This linkage greatly improves and strengthens compatibility and mutual trust. This linkage nurtures the relationship and helps bring it to a high level of mutual reliance. This is also helpful in providing general blessings to the overall love union and often endows it with a greater-than-average share of success. What the two of you do together is likely to succeed.

[JUPITER PARALLEL YOUR URANUS]
Linkage: ROM/R= +60. SEX/R= +35. CMPT/R= +90. This is a helpful linkage that benefits your relationship in a broad, generalized way without a strong direct impact on your love life. This linkage is a SILVER LINKAGE and its primary effect is that it improves your combined abilities to make money, especially on things you do jointly. In this way, it boosts compatibility because when two persons are already involved and they make money together, this success helps them to stay attached emotionally. By itself however, this linkage will not bring two persons together romantically and you need Romance Linkages elsewhere in your charts in order to make a go of it as a loving couple.

[JUPITER PARALLEL YOUR PLUTO]
Linkage: ROM/R= +50. SEX/R= +75. CMPT/R= +175. GOLDEN LINKAGE. The two of you should be able to work together fabulously well to attain shared dreams. From the money perspective, the power of this linkage is so potent that it has a nearly mystical quality. This linkage is also helpful in boosting sexual attraction and compatibility. The one area that this linkage does not improve directly is romance and therefore it does not have any direct effect on love and marriage. On the other hand, when two persons make good money and have good sex together, they are much more likely to stay together. In this sense, this Golden Linkage does have an effect on a love union.

PS: Bucketrider ~

I really enjoy reading your thoughts
Your musings show a great deal of depth in astrological understanding, plus the ability to take a premise a few steps beyond (ie, thinking outside the box).

Note: I'm a "bucket-rider" too (?) -- my Moon is the handle

Cool Zala...

How about this for a Super Linkage (in Helio)

my venus contra-parallel my chiron parallel his mars/saturn/uranus/chiron

also

my neptune contra-parallel my pluto parallel his sun/moon/neptune/pluto and my sun/moon parallel his venus

pretty heavy linkages!

I love it whenever the Northern Node is involved in synastry. Things seem purely progressive.

OKAY - one more question to the declination-experts (if I may...) - I'm really fascinated by this newly discovered tool.;-)

Does anyone of you work with Solar Return-Charts and Declinations? Would that make sense: To compare the SR's declincations to your basic natal chart's declination - and by that try to gain an overview for the next personal year? In my idea (as far as I understood now), the SR-parallels-to-natal would show which things (knowledge/experience) you can rely on in your next year - whereas the contraparallels between natal and SR-chart would tell something about the upcoming lessons you'd have to cope with during the next 12 months.

Does that make sense? Is that a valid method for you?
