8th house stuff. Leads to a deep desire to understand other's motivations.

Freud had Moon and Saturn in his...Jung had Jupiter in his, and so did Reich.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (the psychiatrist who theorized the stages of grief)=Saturn in 8th.

Lacan=Sun-Mercury in the 8th.

pluto is the main indicator for psychology and would be good in any aspect to any of the personal planets, chiron can give understanding and compassion and would be helpful,
signs scorpio and also virgo
possibly asteroid psyche

I think there's one called Jung?

Some people have a natural understanding of human nature.
The word"subtext" describes this,to me.It is the seeing of things under the surface.
People vary in how much of this quality they possess
You,dear Randall,in my opinion,possess a lot

Astrologically speaking,I think you need Neptune and Pluto well aspected.
Neptune gives you the flashes of insight that seem to come from nowhere.
My Neptunian insights are always right lol
I have Neptune in the 12th with a trine to the Sun and Mercury in the 8th.

Strong Scorpio gives intuition.It feels different than Neptune's flashes of insight.
It is more of an keen understanding of human nature.
You can see below the surface as Al Pacino's keen eyes could do in Godfather 2 lol

Cancer insight is gut insight.You feel with your gut as if your gut is another sense organ.

I just want to say I completely agree on the 8th house ruling psychology more than anything else in a chart... But there are many numerous reasons why someone may be interested in psychology, so it is hard to pin down exactly why someone may be pulled to it.

Stating the obvious and being kind of vague here, the water signs(NOT limiting them to the sun) but for different reasons...

Scorpio: Seeing past the superficial, noticing patterns others don't see, and being experts at detecting hidden motivations and body language. Obsession with finding the truth and solving mysteries. Plus, Scorpio is notorious for entering the medical field since they are the healers of the zodiac.

Pisces: If they have control over their own emotions, lots of empathy and sympathy for others without taking it home with them. They have the ability to "know" the pain another personal feels just by listening to their problems. This gives them a strong advantage to help their client.

Cancer: Most are fantastic listeners,(which may be the most important trait to have) have a very strong intuition, many understand family dynamics either through good or bad experiences, and a have a calming nurturing/influence.

I also agree with Virgo due to the analytical side, and that small details others ignore Virgos never seem to miss. Psychologist have to write lots of very precise reports about their research or clients, so having that mercurial energy certainly can't hurt. Gemini's energy is great when it comes to communicating which is very important since if you can't talk with the client I'd imagine you wouldn't get anywhere fast,(not not every form of psychology is about that) but they would need some other factors that show an interest in delving past some of the flighty or superficial parts that Gemini is known for that it might create in their chart.

Capricorn would also be good at helping others set goals and stick to them. But I think they would need lots of Neptune or a water moon to help make sure the client doesn't feel like they are being "graded" at their next appointment. A problem someone I know has with their psychologist who is a Cap despite her adoring her psychologist otherwise. She forces her to see reality and not make excuses for others and gets "tough" with her sometimes. She doesn't like it, but she said it does help her stand up for herself.

Libra is good for relating and seeing both sides, but maybe not the best for advice in a "tense" situation where emotion takes over. But helping others compromise is Libras "A-game".

Another one that might surprise you but that I see is Sagittarius(esp the sun/moon) or very strong ninth house influences. Both are related to "higher knowledge", and someone who is interested in psychology would have to spend years at a university as a prerequisite to get anywhere worthwhile if they were to become a psychologist/clinical social worker, so it does make sense I think. Plus, they can spread that optimism to good use if they are interested in counseling with patients.

I once had a Sagittarius psychologist, and she spoiled me. When she stopped accepting clients because she became a school counselor instead, I never sought another one. I never once felt judged by her during the two years I was her patient. Her words only inspired hope and joy -- to take advantage of opportunity when it arrives and he happy just living life.

As far as aspects go:

Pluto in the first, third, eighth, or tenth house. Pluto aspecting the midheaven with a tight orb. Pluto aspecting the sun, moon, or pluto.

Pisces, Gemini,(yup, Gemini) Aquarius, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Cancer Midheaven ( I realize I just named half of the zodiac, but I've noticed those to be common midheavens in the order that I've listed them in)

Neptune aspecting the moon or mercury.

Moon aspecting mercury

Sun, Moon, Saturn, or Pluto conjunct the I.C. or in the forth (understanding family dynamics because your lineage/family dynamics helps makes you who you are today according to psychology)

Neptune in the tenth (very common)

Moon in the seventh

Sun in the eighth or twelfth house

Mercury in the third or sixth house

A child psychologist's chart I saw had some strong fifth house influence.

I haven't looked for it, but I suppose seeing if the ruler of the 8th aspects the ruler of the 10th or midheaven would make sense too.

I'm sure there is more, but that's all I got at the moment.

I guess if all this is true, I'd be a horrible psychologist then. Sucks because I take grad exams for it next year. And I thought it was my calling since I started studying psych Freshman year of high school. My Jupiter aspects. They're great. *sniffles*

You guys forgot Anna Freud. Her chart is primarily Scorpio and Scorpio Midheaven. But she is a Sagittarius Sun and Gemini Moon. She fought and kept her fathers practices going. Because Jung and Freud were never teacher-disciple. They were partners. So when Jung broke away it shocked Freud because he expected Jung to carry on his practices. But all the Freudian mythological references..That was Jung. Jung had a more extensive knowledge in Mythology. That's because he majored not only in Psychology, but Philosophy. And he was extremely intrigued by Religions. And astrology. He'd make the birth charts of his patients right before their consultation to see potential problems. His knowledge in symbolism, mythology, tarot, astrology, ect was huge. He shows to be right on the cusp of Scorpio/Sagittarius MC. But there is one thing that makes me feel like it'd lean towards Scorpio and that's the extremely profound interest he had in regards to his career involving studies in things of a very dark nature and the devotion he put forth in these studies, is unbelievable. I feel like a Sagittarius Midheaven might need more movement around and high energy, while I think Scorpio is more isolated and also lost in books. More of a "I know what I love in my career and I am going to put all my heart and soul into studying that. Because these are the things that I will go to the darkest depths to find answers for." Mentality. I could be biased because I am a double major in Psychology/Philosophy and Minor in Religious Studies. And I have Scorpio Midheaven. I decided my major back in college before I had even seen Jungs Chart. And the reason I chose my major(s) was because I felt that tapping into the unknown could free humanity and bring a sense of rebirth into the world. But before you can tap into that, you have to see how humans work stemmig from the oldest religions on through mythology and just keep on going.
I also read up in a book once in regards to Jung and they were discussing his midheaven being Scorpio and it had this long detailed thing on it all from him. I can try and find it for you all if you're interested.

Carl Jung,3rd H Moon and Pluto. Leo Sun,Taurus Moon, Aqua Asc;good sun&moon positions,aided by broad,out of box aqua asc=Collective unconscious; animus&anima;eros&thanthos.
Sigmund Freud,aside being key figure in the history of psychology,was very vain. Veeery. He printed his psychoanalisis with 1900. date,so that it would become the most important book of XX century. And,he is outdated. Not everything is penis.

The better question, IMO, would be why those who are so poor at it always seem to choose that profession. If you haven't suffered yourself you can't possibly empathize or understand other people. If you've no faults and never screwed up then you can't possibly be of any help. I've noticed that most of these people are so mediocre that of course they never make any mistakes. They never do anything of any significance either. I think it's much more of a "calling" than any thing that can be taught. Most of the people I know who are the most empathetic and insightful have some scars to show for it. I never get any help from the so-called professionals, because for one thing they are so lacking in life experience. The last therapist I saw was a third or fourth generation doctor. Now how could he possibly empathize with real problems? I couldn't figure out why he was so glib about finances til I found out he'd had it so easy. His biggest problem is he can't pass organic chemistry. My heart bleeds for the twit. I get better advice from the bum on the street than these people. I'm a Leo though and maybe we're more self aware. I just think that they have some nerve acting like they have all the answers. LOL.

Scorpio, Pluto, 8th house and all aspects to the heliocentric planetary nodes, particularly Mercury...These nodes represent the evolutionary growth of the collective conscious/unconscious.

I credit Glaucus with helping me discover this...
The position of the nodes are roughly at
Mercury 18° Taurus 20'
Venus 16° Gemini 40'
Mars 19° Taurus 33'
Jupiter 10° Cancer 29'
Saturn 23° Cancer 38'
Uranus 13° Gemini 59'
Neptune 11° Leo 47'
Pluto 20° Cancer 17'

hmm,

i have general interest in psychology and love the more commercial side of it (im not into the biology side of it though)..

i jsut adore the mind, and understanding it,and i get great kicks out of understanding people psychologically and building a profile for how it works.

i use astrology to help alot too now.

i don't have any 8th house planets or strong scorpio, but without intending to toot my own horn aha, i feel quite able in that side of psychology.

i agree with Ami, i don't think its all Pluto.

different water signs are better at different important elements.

Scorpio/Pluto seems to be in mymind similar to virgo energy, it understands deeply how the person is and how they work and why they work that way. scorpio detects, seeks, puts peices of a picture puzzle together, scorpio and pluto is the sign that that fits the peices together of a puzzle, they arebest at understanding the peices and how they come to fit together, they understand.

Neptune/Pisces is perception,and imagination, both important. you need to be able to read and perceive emotions acutely, and sense it. neptune/pisces can easily detect and perceive. waht makes this powerful is they are able to Imagine how the other feels, and create imagination from what they perceive. this helps the other part, in the puzzle analogy, neptune/pisces eprceives and imagines what the complete picture looks like by perceiving and imagining it and where that peices fits in correspondance.

for cancer, well, sorry cancers, i lack understandign and knowledge where you fit in, but i think if use my own anti clock wise zodiac and think of cancer as the water version of leo, then perhaps cancer is part where experience is , they know best, perhaps how to handle what the final picture means when the puzzle is complete. key word - caring.

in my own chart, i point my psychology interest and skill down to :

pluto in the 4th house
pluto square ascendant
moon trine asc
neptune trine mars
neptune square moon
pluto sextile mars

moon in the 9th house

mercury in the 3rd (along with venus)

mercury and venus in virgo.

possibly some uranus aspects to venus/sun
and jupiter to venus/moon

and chiron to square moon,

chiron is the one who feels good being a counsellor/listener/healer, and perhaps feels they can do this as a psychologist in the big picture.

as for rulers,

well, my moon rules my 12th,
moon depositor sextiles pluto
and possibly, my 8th house ruler squares my moon & trines mars.

my mc ruler trines neptune 1 orb and sextiles pluto

I agree.
I was sexually abused by my stepdad for over 10 years.
Strange thing though, a bunch of his personal planets conjunct my midheaven & mars & pluto in Scorpio. So I feel like I can do something in the field of psychiatry to try and reach out.
It's easy to open up in talking to someone who has gone through it. There is a personal connection between you and the other person. And you realise they truly understand. And it feels good to have someone understand and tell you that you're not crazy. But I also really enjoy someone who is realistic too. Someone who makes me feel like I will make it through. And someone who inspires me. Someone sincere but genuine.

This Aries guy I dated I think would be perfect for it. I don't know why. Something about his personality. His midheaven and mars is in Aqua. He's said he always felt compelled to help other people. And he actually is very soft and genuine underneath. People gravitate towards him too. I think it might be the Venus Pisces thing. He is also a strong spiritual side too.

I'd also think not so much with cancer because I feel like the leading by gut/instinct thing is a little too heavy and ungrounded for me. I mean if people are lead by gut feeling alone, that automatically puts up a red flag because they've already judged their patient before even knowing them. You can't do that in Psychiatry or Psychology. I would say possibly a Leo Sun/Pisces Moon person. I like stability, intelligence and sunny depositions. And I like the genuine feel of emotion with pisces. It's not too overwhelming,intense, or suffocating.

I have an empty 8th and 12th (which I understand why, but that's a different subject). But I have a loaded 5th House. I also have two others mentioned here: Moon Trine Pluto and Mercury Trine Pluto. What do ya'll think of Moon Trine Uranus and Mercury Trine Uranus? Would Uranus play a role in being a good psychologist? Those placements grant psychological well-being, which one could possibly infer would be a good trait to have in that field. I also have Mercury Sextile Neptune.

I don't know too much about Uranus. I can SEE those Uranus aspects in you,Randall.
Uranus trine moon/mercury would allow you to take your emotions new and novel places.
Your heart can make jumps which would frighten other people i.e. see things new ways,act in new and different ways and be OK with it.

I see the Uranus aspects as more of a creator of new theories or practices in Psychology rather than of particular use in the clinical setting.
I could see Janov the founder of Primal Therapy as having strong Uranus aspects.
Perl, the founder of Gestalt therapy broke barriers with his novel approach,too.

I am sure Uranus would come in handy ,anyplace, when it is in such good aspects .
However,*I* see it as more out of the box-----creating new modalities rather than practicing ideas some one else has devised.

I see the dynamics/aspects between planets (sextiles, etc) as showing someone's personality patterns and emotional responses and tendencies...house placement and (to a much lesser degree) sign placement show the areas of life and types of career they're suited to, in my opinion.

I actually see, looking at charts of psychologists where an accurate birthtime is on record, that planets in the 8th are more important than Pluto aspects or planets in Scorpio. Pluto stuff just makes people obsessive, intense, interested in uncovering secrets, and those traits get applied to the emphasized houses in their chart if Pluto touches planets in the houses.

I disagree about Neptune/the 12th...you'll see both 8th and 12th in people with a dreamy interest in alternative spirituality, lots of 8th in occultists...so you'll see both 8th and 12th among astrologers. And then 9th and 12th with religious innovators, spiritualists.

But with good psychologists, the leaders in the field, it's just 8th house planets...especially Saturn (bringing discipline in the field, struggling with the issues) or Jupiter (luck and opportunity and greatness when exploring deep motivations.)...the way you often see Saturn OR Jupiter in the 2nd houses of the very very rich...greatness in something often comes from either great hardship in it, or great ease.

The MC is also important...the few of the greats who don't have one or two 8th house planets (and it's not a "packed 8th house" usually, there's more balance than that in these charts...Freud, Jung, etc had planets in the 8th, NOT a "packed 8th") have a Scorpio MC.

Example--Skinner has only NN in the 8th, but a Scorpio Midheaven.

Sum up:

Freud=Moon, Saturn in 8th
Jung=Jupiter in 8th
Reich=Jupiter in 8th
Skinner=NN in 8th, Scorpio MC
Adler=Sun, Mercury, Mars in 8th
R.D. Laing=Mercury in 8th (interestingly, MC at 29 Sag, so close to busting into Scorpio)
Jacques Lacan=Sun, Venus in 8th
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross==Saturn in 8th
etc etc

Each of these people, like every human being, has complex charts...and there are many possible motivations for going into psychology. But the brilliant, successful, innovative ones who expand and strengthen the field all have in common==8th house.

Actual placements in the 8th are more significant in making a good psychologist than Pluto aspects or strong Pluto/Scorpio, IMO.

I have one of the most intriguing NN placements. To read the NN, you also have to look at the House. I have NN in Gemini (denoting strong skepticism and disdain for theism), but it's in my 9th House (meaning I should engage in religious pursuits). And such is the dichotomy that is me.

Uranus psychologist... A good one! Controversial in its methods,interested in existence and development of problem,not quite shoulder to cry on. > U have Aedipus complex.... Well,u gonna have to take my word on it<
Lots of questions,little answers.
Eccentric loner,someone with such an excitable emotional nature... Bit of a case itself
