Mercury to Mars/Saturn/Uranus/Neptune/Pluto, sometimes Jupiter would suffice if there was a hard aspect between the 1st set already, to back it up. It also depended on the type. Science was better for Mars/Saturn/Uranus, Arts was better for Neptune/Pluto, a combo of the 2 could combine, open up a new frontier, a new way of looking at a certain subject. Often hard aspects, and wide orbs, orbs that I would not likely use, but that would show up on astro.com's default chart. A 9 degree opposition for example. Or an out of sign 9 degree square. More than 1 aspect, often, usually just 1 of these was not enough. The aspect itself didn't matter so much as Mercury being contacted by a set of planets, often generational, if not generational then involved in some type of aspect pattern, often a hard one like a t-square. It seemed like Mercury was being agitated, was being called on to get to the bottom of something, and the person could not rest until it was satisfied. The Mercury aspects, looking at them, you wouldn't think they were mentally 'calm' individuals, the aspects suggested that it was hard for their minds to find peace. But this was just Mercury, not looking at H3 rulers or placements, etc. Mercury in hard aspect to Saturn/Uranus simultaneously seemed to come up often, or something like Mercury in aspect to Uranus, and Uranus in aspect to Saturn, even if Saturn wasn't in aspect to Mercury, there was still a connection there. Mercury square Mars, Mars opp Saturn but Saturn not connected to Mercury, for another example. Mercury trine Neptune, Neptune square Uranus but Uranus not connected to Mercury, it goes on and on.

Edison's chart doesn't have an agitated Mercury. What he does have is Mercury conj Sun conj Neptune (in Aquarius) conj Saturn conj Venus (in Pisces) all placed in the 3rd. So his is one of the exceptions, but to me it is still obvious the genius there. Generational planets, in general, have a lot to say about that. The reason being is that when one is plugged into the generational planets they are called to embody the spirit of the times in which they are placed. They don't have to answer it, and generational planets are not easy to grasp, they can introduce a lot of problems (Neptune addiction Uranus madness Pluto power hungry) in the wrong hands. Not everyone can answer the call, but some can, and geniuses (and often true artists) are part of that group. To be able to tune into collective energies, you have to natally be personally attuned to either collective planets (Uranus/Neptune/Pluto) and/or their (modern) signs. I don't use traditional rulerships.[/B][/QUOTE]

this was very interesting/insightful, it makes a lot of sense.

ive got a large t-sqaure i think contributes to my intelligence that i found relative to what was written above. ive got: mercury conjunct sun/mars 6th house libra squaring saturn/neptune/uranus conjunction in 9th house capricorn (uranus on 8th/9th house cusp exact) opposing jupiter conjunct chiron in 3rd house cancer. ive always felt mentally, that i had an easy time remembering or understanding subjects. a lot of mental stress and tension! restlessness and insomnia too

ive also read that the moon is a really good indicator of memory. my moons in virgo and i usually remember most details of conversations or things people have said as well as a vague photographic memory of what i see, usually if i take directions to a place once ill remember it through visual memory. but my moons closely trine uranus as well as neptune saturn and jupiter.

i think too that the 6th house contributes to intelligence as well considering its a virgo and also a mercury house. i know it traditionally rules work, routine and all that but it also helps with mental faculties like critical acumen, and giving a lively sharp mind.

There are two ways to look at intelligence. 3rd house for the logical mind (male brain) and 9th house for the creative side (female brain.) This makes sense as the brain is split into two parts.

No, not aspects to Mercury, unless the person is Aries rising.
You need to look at aspects to the third and ninth house rulers.

Einstein is Cancer rising, which means Mercury rules house 3, and Neptune rules house 9. Both are in semi-sextile aspect, the second best aspect.

Another thing to look at is the strength of the planet. The outers ruling either side of the brain is very good as they both take a long time to move round the zodiac, therefore strong. Just stick to aspects 1st of all, as you don't want to get too confused looking at planet strength, while looking at the zodiac from a house point of view, while having planet point of view in your head at the same time. Can be confusing when you learn a different way than you are accustomed to.

I can be a twat sometimes Funny too.

LOL...

My arabic part Genius is in virgo at 15 degrees which conjuncts my mercury at 17 and MC at 19 but I am smart and bright, however not a genius...hopefully next life time LOL.

I also have athene conjunct by 3 orb my sun and oppose my moon by 4 orb.

Mercury and sun in virgo conjunct MC and mercury in the 9th. Mercury opposite moon too.

Also I have asteroid academia conjunct my northnode and square my moon, sextile venus/mars and opposite neptune.

Interesting, my mom was always pushing me academically and my academia squares my moon. If it wasn't for my mom pushing me and believing in me, my grades wouldn't have started improving in 9th grade. It was her pushing me and believing in me that made me push myself and now I do really well with 0 pushing from her part.

Oh and natal mercury retrograde.

Woah these asteriods actually all do make sense?

I have academia conjunct my moon by less than a degree, and venus by a degree.
