Ahh, a Columbia grad! Did you know Obama, too? Sometimes, he makes so much sense, though. I mean, he'll be the only one willing to admit there is an elephant in the room. "The war on terror is a mythical historical narrative." -Brzezinski Classic. ARIES, just blurting it out.

Faith, To be honest, the President and I took a honors seminar on Post-WWII American Foreign Policy together. Just that one course. He was a PoliSci major and I was in Economics, but the common denominator was International Affairs. The President graduated two years ahead of me. But he absconded to Harvard while I carried on and on over there (Economics grad school, and later at Intl. Affairs School and B School). It was at grad school that I studied under a number of notables, including Brzezinski. Actually four won Nobel prizes, but means squat. My graduate adviser was Stephen Bosworth, the rare Reaganite in liberal hell. The first day of class, that SOB Brzezinski would predict that half of the class would drop out and the he'll give half of the rest Cs. F that.

Ian,NOT SURPRISED! Wow, that's great though. Did you like Obama, talk with him, stuff like that? OK enough of trying to be objective, I'm with you: F Brzezinski. Must've been wonderful learning from Nobel prize winners. I envy your education/brains that got you there. But at least I can still read good books, so life's not too shabby. IP: Logged |

You tend not to forget a brother with an afro (small one). He was soft spoken and quiet. Definitely not the forceful type. No I wasn't friends with him The right wing business types tend to hang together and all my buddies went to Wall Street
I also knew George Stephanopoulos in passing. He was one semester ahead of the President and another PoliSci grad (1982). No classes together. I studied under Edmund Phelps (2006), Robert Mundell (1999), Jospeh Stiglitz (2001) and Robert Merton (1997), four Nobel Prize winners in Economics, and a couple of Business School notables as well. I submitted my resume to get into a class with Jim Rogers (the raider). He guaranteed his class of B school kids at least $100K if we could find him a proper acquisition target or could identify a turnaround company to chop up for value He got fired from the faculty soon after that IP: Logged |

As much as I hate to say it, I think Obama is going to win too. And he and many others already know it.They want us to believe we have a say in these matters. We don't. IP: Logged |

I want Ron Paul to win. He seems honest and clear cut. It doesn't seem like he would be the type to waver and change his stances. I mean, he's had most of his views for oh 50 years? lol Obama seems like a sweet talker and nothing more. Did you see what he said to the Russian official? Crazy. IP: Logged |

What's interesting is, BOTH sides feel that they have no say in the matter, and that the other side is rigging everything and their side is infallible. They get to this conclusion from wildly different directions. Nevertheless, it is the same sort of conclusion. Watching everything unfold from both sides is absolutely fascinating if you remove the personal component from it. When you remove EVERYTHING else surrounding all of the government, all it comes down to is people wanting different things. Even further, it's a difference between those who want more control, and those who want less control. Because of the very nature of those who want control, it seems like an unreconciable issue, and is the very nature of humans themselves.

Ian,Sorry I'm out of the loop with famous economists (except Ron Paul, who did go to my college...40 years before me ) HOWEVER, I love that story about Jim Rogers! 'You know he moved to Singapore and is raising his girls there now? He says Asia is *the place to be.* What do you think of that? I loved Rogers' book Investment Biker. I can totally see him making that offer to his class. Thanks for the stories! IP: Logged |
