Do I believe there should be deep seated pain in order to be successful?....I don't think it's really needed per se but it can be helpful. Salvador Dali, for example, wasn't really known to be that "suffering artist" though he was eccentric and he was a successful artist. Andy Warhol wasn't a sad guy. I think a lot of factors come into play. Warhol was more, what I would call, a commercial artist, he hung out with all the actors and musicians at the time and it seemed more about who was friends with who and who had the drugs, etc. Andy had the drugs which is why he had connections.

Now, when it comes to the other things, like money, it takes money to make money. Nirvana's first album was recorded for $600+ and that's not a ton, no, but that was also in the early 90's and things have changed since then with the wonderful internet. It can be helpful to some artists and others find it hindering when it comes to the $making. Whether they were born into a wealthy family is of course going to make it easier to become successful if their family supports what they are doing. Say a member of a band's father or mother was also a musician...that's automatic foot in the door if they want it. I would say visual artists would have an easier time making$ on the net.

As for pain in the life, classic nature vs. nurture. People's environment affects them, I'm a strong believer in that, just as the psychology of the person will affect the person. I don't think the 2 can be taken from the other, so many things make a person.

So now to answer your question, when it comes to the natal chart, which I believe would have some affect on their personality and psychology...I would say strong Neptune which creates that high sensitivity, pluto, saturn, venus. Even if one or two of them is badly aspected that can create drive to push themselves to create something to heal themselves through art or simply express themselves because art is the only way they've found to. Saturn sextile or trine venus when saturn isn't in the most wonderful place could be helpful to dig. Pluto in an artistic house. That being said sometimes the pain can be healing or it can push past that to self-destructive behavior, like Kurt, was he successful in the long run? No, just for a while. I think the success is what attributed to his death. His fans called him a "sell-out" for becoming successful.

When it comes to careers that aren't artistic. I can't really comment. I would say Saturn is well placed. haha. Maybe Mars.

Also, I don't think fame and success are chain linked.

I believe pain is not essential, but it can assist. For me personally I recently intentionally killed off my sense of innocence and have begot vacillation/ambivalence since. Life if just a giant pandoras box of contradictions & whatever you focus on is exactly what you will get!
I could publicly acknowledge that certain life situations will wear me down and to be well adjusted is just a choice I've made. OR I could mope, "ALL OF MY PURITY HAS VANQUISHED!"
...
“Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Psychologically it is proven that Happy People are More Likely To Succeed. Happy people make better choices and put more attention into the care of their future decisions.
I believe that if you don't know your a strong individual, then you shouldn't take brazen movements sacrificing your happiness knowing you could have otherwise.
"Without that positive affect, people are less confident that it is worth it to work hard for their future." (which for me is total B.S.; I, last night, read my Vedic Virgo sun/mercury/venus personality and have gained loads of confidence in my abilities!)
To sum it up, unless its productive, trash it.
Be Happy!

Ridiculous, there's no need for deep pain to be successful.
But if it makes things seem more romantic
