I learned the other day that the sign your mars is in shows where/how people respect you.

mars in Cancer, this person is good at cutting all ties with little effort or emotion and very abruptly (I can vouch for that considering my ex had this placement)

mars in Gemini, people notice their eloquence and pay attention when they talk

mars in Pisces, people admire their craving to uncover secrets

etc

This. I seem to cycle through people/friends every 2-3 years. Always thought of it more as my Moon in Gemini (in 1st) & Uranus sq Venus thou.

My Cancer mars is also unaspected, which seems to make it a little unpredictable.

Mars 1° conjunct Pluto in Scorpio III ....... they respect... the dark intensity when/if I speak? lol

Whenever I think of these combined energies I always get this mental picture of my Mars/Pluto conjunction as Charon crossing the river Styx (something like that), so maybe?! :P

I wouldn't say Cancer mars is good at cutting off ties. They're very emotional so it's difficult for them to cut ties.. but it's true that once they have made up their mind and they are done - they are done.
It takes them a long time to get there though ^

My Mars is in Capricorn & I'm probably most respected at work.. so it's true for me.

Wouldn't Cancer Mars have more do to with mothering skills? or ability to maintain a family?

I have Mars in cancer and have no problem walking away from people. Have done it many times without a second thought. I dont keep up with people very well either, if they don't keep up with me I move on. Pretty simple. At one point I was ready to walk away from all family until I was talked out of it and convinced to try to work things out. I wouldn't really attribute my ability to move on & start new with people on my Mars thou. I definitely lack mothering/nourishing skills. Also don't think anyone would ever call me emotional. Passionate maybe, but not emotional. And maintaining a family...just no. But I do love playing defensive positions in sports. Which is probably closer to Mars' nature than emotional attachments.

I have a capricorn mars. Not sure if they respect me per say but I do know for a fact that nobody dares to cross me or irritate me. If I hate them and they irritate me then I get extremely angry... as in.. I once broke a 7 up glass in my hand because my friend ****** me off. With people I don't care about.. I ignore them until they break down in front of me. :P I have a serious look on my face .. or so i've been told.^-^ I also have lots of pride
