Yeah, I agree. If you've studied a language, it's easy enough to look at a word and logically know what it means. That doesn't mean that your brain is going to process it properly if someone else says it, though (especially if it's pronounced differently than you've studied it for whatever reason, i.e., accent). It also doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be able to do the verbal gymnastics to say it properly yourself. ------------------ Sun -> Aries Moon -> Sagittarius Ascendant ->Virgo IP: Logged |

You don't have to speak a language to read and write it. When you're forced to learn a language because you need to pass a written exam in school FOR YEARS you will know. Arabic was my second language for 8 years and I didn't have a choice being in an arab country. IP: Logged |

It works for some, apparently even though it's weird. I can read and write hangeul, hiragana and a bit of kanji and katakana (korean and japanese characters) even if I don't understand most of the words.

These are both terribly stereotypical placements for languages, but my husband has a 1st House Merc (Taurus) and Gemini Sun conj Jupiter and picks up languages like mad.Mad, I say. ------------------ If I've included this sig, it's because I'm posting from a mobile device. If this was an educational place or an official mail - maybe I'd pay more attention to my grammar, but on a forum or while writing a mail to a friend... I don't care that much about grammatical rules. Why? Because I'd express myself less freely while concentrating on all the factors involved... and i don't like that. This is not an official speech... so if my english bothers some grammar nazi (Saturn at its best) - that's... AWESOME!! :P In a mail to a friend (it can be even up to 10 pages long) I tend to make tons of mistakes that involve common words (example: writing "or/with/where" as "are/whit/were" and viceversa...) and phrases, sometimes even missing words (in my head all was fine - but for some reason my hands couldn't keep up... ). Though... something does bother me: I got used to functions like auto-correct, which seemed helpful when i started using them, but... I got more lazy cause of them and the mistakes I make while not paying attention to the corrected words... :P Not sure if your question is serious or not but - if I can help you with anything, sure - why not. lol yea i mean it would be nice to talk with lots of people too i don't invent words! but i remember this one english assignment we had to and everyone liked the words i made up! and their definitions etc... I like the way words sound when one sings or rhymes them. Like alliteration and eggcorns (well kinda eggcorns i think what i like aren't true eggcorns maybe) my mercury is in cap sandwiched by uranus and neptune. and i guess jupiter is opposite it too by 6 deg. since we're mentioning jupiter. nice thread

I looove languages, word plays and listening to music in foreign languages. It is one of my life goals to be once able to speak at least 5 languages fluently Besides my native tongue I speak English and Spanish fluently, quite good at Portuguese, Serbian, and am on the beginner's level in German and Russian, actually understand quite a lot. Someday I'll start with Greek and I also find Hebrew, Arabic, Hindu and Scandinavian languages very appealing life is so short, man! I am slowly getting there but I don't have the will or stamina to learn the languages that don't have "the whole package" , which for me is to love the people, their culture, have the wish to continuously travel there and being able to travel there, if not physically at least in mind, watching movies etc Virgo mercury 7h square gemini mars. hm, might be also my virgo venus squaring sagittarius moon. 5H gemini cusp. pluto in 9th house. As I know, half people in Montreal (coming from other countries) speak three languages: their mother language and to come there, they have to speak either English or French. If they don't speak French, they have to go to the Evening School (for free) to study French. That is very important to get job at all. Dit is al met al maar een armoedig taaltje wereldwijd. Verder heb ik weinig ambitie het tot een meertalig individu te schoppen. Ik verdiep me liever in de taal achter de taal. Mijn favoriete quote zou daarvan iets kunnen onthullen;I curse all negative purism that tells me not to use a word from another language that either expresses something that my own language cannot or does that in a more delicate manner. *Goethe* Btw the translation in my own language sounds waaaay better, I just can't *feel* the core in here. Too much ratio. This is how it sounds in my mommy language; I curse all purism that forbids me to use a word in which another language has highlighted much more or more heartfelt. *me* IP: Logged |
