I was very certain she would pick the interpretation based on equal houses to be the right one (I didn`t tell her which one, and even if I did, it woldn`t have mattered anyway, as she has no clue about astrology).

The interpretation based on equal was okayish in accuracy; the one based on Placidus left her literally shaking and wondering how on earth I could have known these things she had never even shared with her close friends.
And despite the unbalnced houses in her chart.

BTW this is her chart http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r111/Darkdreamer_02/swedenhouses_zpsec0c2613.gif

for me it pretty much boils down to the 5th house.

5th house in Taurus, with ruler of 5th in Caprricorn, squared by Pluto on MC (which rules 11th and 12th house), that is me in a nutshell in terms of my sexual identity (and no I am not too happy about it most of thet ime).
But ONLY in the totality of the configuration I just mentioned, with signbackground, rulerships, aspects - connecting different houses through tenancy and rulership-.

Aries on the cusp of 5th house, ruler of 5th house in Sagittarius conjunct Neptune and ASC, sounds nice to me (I am always one for imagination, evasiveness, dreaminess and so on), but it is not how I act in reality, when it comes to love and romance and sex.
I am NOT outgoing in this regard, at all. I am also not too dreamy interestingly, even though I have this tendency in other areas of my life.
I am pretty much earthy in this regard, with a kind of introverted intensity.

So in this instance I will say it, too. ARies on the 5th housecusp with ruler in sagittarius? Not me at all.

Hi Ceri and Doux,

It comes down to the 5th house for me as well. The 5th house shows our romantic taste, especially during the courtship/early phase of the relationship. I've also found that people resonate better with their placidus 5th house cusp, ruler, and aspects, in terms of what they like (Even if placidus the placidus 5th house cusp is different then in equal, and is highly skewed).

My 5th house is Aries ruled by Mars in Leo. I’m not terrifically bold by any means because of my overall chart (Cap Sun/Cancer Moon), but when I feel strongly for somebody I do become more willing to take some type of a risk, or push myself forward more...

The attitude here is, 'I wouldn't noramally do this, but you are special, so I'm willing to take a leap!'. To me, with my chart, the actions that I take might feel very bold. But to someone with a more outgoing chart overall, the things that feel bold to me might seem normal, or no big deal to them. It's the ATTITUDE behind my actions that feels Aries/Leo, more then the actions themselves. If this makes sense.

Also when it comes to what impresses me about guys, I'm very attracted to strong, confident, fiery personalities, that are outgoing, and have a charisma and 'Presence'... As well as a sort of 'little boy' enthusiasm, cheeky humor, and innocence in the mix. I wouldn't even notice that Pisces type moping in the corner (I'll leave that to someone with Neptune in the 5th house). Aries/Leo fits overall.

One more thing, I was reading this astrology book a while ago, and the author uses both placidus and koch house systems. She said that placidus works for psychological analysis very well... It shows things like taste, moods, and attitude, toward different things. She also said that koch works very well for event related predictions... She said that when planets transited over a koch house cusp, that she'd always notice some type of event happening in relation that house.

I know that placidus works for taste for sure! The koch/event thing I'm not so sure about. I'm keeping an open mind though, and am going to watch what happens during transits to koch house cusps from now on.

Doux, you might want to try the event/koch experiement if you want to try a house system other then placidus. I guess the theory is that placidus might explain our feelings about particular life issues, while koch might explain what actually happens to us? Anyway, I'm going to write a list of my koch house cusps and try it, see what happens with transits.

In other systems, ruler becomes Mercury.

That makes the Sun & Mercury rulers of my 5th, and they're conjunct in Scorpio.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's use Placidus:

Sun & Mercury rule the 5th.
They're conjunct in Scorpio in the 6th.

So this tells me, that I'm picky in my romantic partners, and that I want depth and feelings in my romantic relationships (right?).
Sex is not a casual thing for me and I can feel awkward (Virgo, 6th house).

^ That's how I would interpret it.

But what role does Leo / the Sun play here?
That could very well apply to ruler of 5th Mercury (Virgo) in Scorpio in the 6th, by itself.

Hey Doux! You know I love you so I'm gonna try to explain how I would interpret your 5th House ruler conjunct your 1st/5th House ruler.

So if the 4th House is the past, what happened before you stepped outside your home and started making opinions yourself and expressing your uniqueness, the 5th House is exactly that! It's when you realize that you have opinions, personal expression through clothing, hairstyles, mannerisms, etcetera etcetera.

When using House rulers it's imperative that we use a general look at Houses to get a full meaning from their interpretation.

The 5th House explains romance because romance enhances your uniqueness but to consider it only romantic is to devalue the greatness of the 5th House. It's about what bolsters your own imprint, your specialness in the eyes of others, how others see you moving about in the world. What impact you have on others not just because of your beliefs, your words or your family but because of you simply being the complicated, special person that you are.

Romance bolsters this uniqueness because someone is paying special attention to JUST YOU! They're making you feel like you're great just as you are. You can have non-sexual romance with people too, not just people you might start a sexual relationship with.

Your 6th House is your craft in the world, the service that you give to others. It is how you help people in your vicinity. It's your day to day life and what service that entails.

Your two 5th House rulers (from Placidus' perspective) sitting together in the 6th House of Scorpio implies that your self-expression is bolstered through service to other's psyche or mental well-being. You may care deeply about how other people are dealing with issues. Probably because you went through similar problems mentally in the past. Your service to others naturally gains you a seat to face their depth. You could love psychology or the intimacy that comes with helping others. You may have had to overcome feeling down and out, lost and lonely. Scorpio can be a lonely sign, as we all know and it also deals with the psyche. It's possible that you have been stifled from expressing your genuine care for other's mental health in the past because no one wanted your opinion or misunderstood your position. You may feel like you have to hide your expression sometimes, fearful that people might shun it. You could be very sensitive to people's reactions to your service work because it's tied into your physical self and your unique self-expression. You may have felt cast out because of the 5th House ruler being in a deep sign like Scorpio and also conjunct your 1st House ruler, you literally, physically were lonely, like poor Pluto usually is. Though this is what teaches Pluto to be so in depth and to see his worth. He must be cast out to find his true self.

I believe that the Sun actually enhances what it conjuncts, instead of shining so bright you can't see the energy. Instead, I think it merges with the planet closest to it and shines the light of that planet so it cannot be unseen, when it's shown, it's BRIGHT!

Now we would look to Venus' placement, your 6th House ruler to see what sphere of life your service is being expressed intensely, and also Mars and Pluto to gain more perspective on your service to the world and day to day cares. Though you will naturally bring a Venusian balance and sweet quality to your dealings with others because Libra is all about focusing on the light side. With Scorpio mixed in, you start out in the light side and may eventually move into the dark side when helping people out.

I may be TOTALLY off if I got the House rulers wrong but I hope I understood that correctly!

I hope that made sense too, I'm weird and usually don't make sense!

Of them all, I relate best to my equal house chart! Plus with equal house, Jupiter is in H3 and I have lots of siblings. It would be in H4 otherwise.

Oh yes. Ms Prism just reminded me with her post, of course the 5th house is more then just ‘romantic’ inclinations. I tend to focus on that because of my astro-style, but there are other ways the 5th can be interpreted.

So if the 5th house cusp changes from one sign to another when using different house systems, there are a variety of different ways of looking at the interpretation of the 5th to see what fits.

The 5th house is where we give of our-selves in the world for all to see. It’s where and how we give of our creativity, inspiration, and passion, for people, topics, things. When we have a ‘WOW’ type feeling about something, and become inspired towards creativity because of it, that is the 5th house. When we experience a 5th house type inspiration, we feel 'alive', exhilarated, and euphoric, with excitement and radiant joy. The 5th house is where we express what we really care about with all our hearts, and how we express it. Our pride and joy can be put on the line in the 5th because people may love what we put forth, or be neutral to it, or maybe not like it at all. When the 5th house is highly active in the natal or by transits, we may feel impelled express openly about something of great personal significance to us. The 5th house shows how we cherish that which is dear to us, and then send it out into the world in form of some type of creative act/production/performance/sentiment.

One of the biggest ways in traditional astrology to interpret the 5th house, has to do with creativity. Actually making ‘something’ in some type of project like an art work, or a book we wrote. Often we were inspired to do these productions due to our own passions about someone or something. This makes the 5th house sound very formal and ‘professional’ though. In our everyday lives we could have 5th house feelings about something as simple as letter we wrote expressing our feelings to somebody, or the great casserole we cooked last night, or how we wore this cute outfit and attracted a lot of attention. People with strong 5th houses tend to blow their own trumpets a lot. Sometimes this is arrogance, but mostly this is just how they are. They feel a need to express what’s inside them to the world in a way that makes an impact.

Typically people have 5th house feelings about their children, a feeling of pride and adoration, especially when their child, who they have lovingly nurtured makes some kind of achievement. When parents start getting into their 5th house, they go into what I think of as ’My Precious Darling Baby! Mode.

People also have 5th house feelings about their sweethearts. Someone has come along and blown you away with how much the are able to make you feel, and how much they impress you. When we express how strongly we feel about our sweethearts, and what they make us feel, we risk heartbreak if they don’t return our feelings. Or great joy if they do. We are likely to express these feelings in the style of our 5th house placements (With maybe a bit of help from Venus, Mars, and the Sun itself in our charts as well).

Also, the Sun rules the 5th house and the 5th is associated with the father too. My Dad was an Aries and his Sun was in my 5th house. Kids often look up to their fathers, and feel pride and adoration for them. This is different then the stern saturnine type of father, seen by Cap/Saturn/10th house stuff in the chart. It’s more like the fun Dad that impresses you.

Both the Sun and the 5th house are associated with males, and masculinity traditionally. I think it's interesting that in most cultures, guys are definitely expected to make the first move, and take bigger risks in the arena of love. They are also usually expected to say 'I love you' first. I think this cultural tid bit says a lot about how the 5th house is associated with reaching out, and taking a risk, by putting what's important to us 'out there' on display.

Yeah, so that’s a couple of different ways that we can analyze the 5th so see which house cusp suits us best.

Oh Doux,

About the 5th house, when initially attracted to people, do you prefer more of an introverted, Virgo type demeanor, or the outgoing Leo type. Asking what style makes an impact on someone has been one of my main methods for establishing the true sign and ruler of the 5th house cusp.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I find it weird that some of you use equal houses, but oh well, whatever works.

MsPrism,

Thank you for your great reply.
It does make sense to me, a whole lot.
You're quite intuitive, aren't you?
Very gifted.

Lotis White,

I can see what you mean, yes.
Thanks a lot for elaborating.

Good question!
Speaking strictly of attraction, I'd say the outgoing / energetic type attracts me more, but that is also reflected by my Sag DSC and Mars conjunct DSC, I think.

Pretty sure people who have planets in late Leo make me feel 5th house-ish.
I remember my biggest crush had a Leo Moon that fell right on the cusp of my 5th house, and I was completely in love with him.
But he also had his Mars conjunct my Moon in Virgo in the 5th.

But I can say that what attracted me most in him was that he was very generous with his time and affection - very demonstrative, and he did "take risks" - I liked that.

So I guess my 5th house cusp is in Leo, after all!

Slam Dunk! I can almost guarantee your 5th is in late Leo if this is the case.

What I've noticed is that the attraction to the actual sign on the cusp, or it's ruler, or planets in the 5th are the strongest in terms of the traits we like... But to a lesser degree, there is also an attraction to the next sign along (the part of it that actually falls into the 5th house at least).

The attraction to the next sign along in the 5th house tends to be milder, and less exaggerated then the cusp/ruler/planet stuff, but it's still there. If a person has planets in both the cusp sign, and the next sign along, sitting in your 5th house, the effect is enhanced. I'm not surprised about your Leo Moon/Virgo Mars crush! If Leo is on your 5th house cusp the attraction to Leo traits will be strongest (like how you mentioned loving his generosity, giving spirit), but there'd still be something of an attraction to Virgo traits as well.

It's the same for me. Aries is on my 5th house cusp but the first half of Taurus falls into my 5th as well. Along with my Vertex at 15 Taurus. Planets in early Taurus trineing my Cap Sun, or on my Vertex will catch my eye, and I have a certain love for the calm, steady, unfazed quality that Taurus has, as well as their Venusian beauty/pleasure loving side. If I were to describe my 'type' though, I'd probably describe more Aries/Leo traits (along with my 7th/8th house stuff too).

That`s what I think, too, but everytime I try articulating it someone comes in telling me about combustion.
But I am glad I am not the only one who has observed and experienced it like this.

In my own case Sun is tightly conjunct Mercury. I know of someone who has Sun conjunct Moon (overlaying my conjunction actually).
Despite both being Sag, it always fascinated me how instictual he is and seems to react to a pure emotional stimulus, also very sensual (though that could be something else), while my first reaction to anything is quite analytical, trying to think things through to understand them, get a grasp of them.

In our cases the planet in conjunction to the Sun is brought very much into focus.

In Placidus, my houses are really uneven.

So I've been reading about different house systems and so far the ones that hold the most interest for me are Koch and Porphyry.

Of course some of my planets change houses, so I've been trying to understand how exactly this could affect me.

But I feel like it's the right time to reconsider my natal chart.

I want to keep a close eye on my transits and progressions, to see how they affect me in a given time, and if the house system supports that change.

Will post my discoveries here, if any.[/B]

Oh sure... thanks... give me something else to OBSESS over when I should be working.

Thanks Ceri,

I don't know how close you are to your grandma, but I just want to say I'm sorry for your loss. Even though I believe we are all eternal souls it's still sad when someone we care for has to 'leave'. I lost my father a few months ago, I still feel very raw about it, as I loved my Dad a lot. That being said, I swear I've heard his voice mentally and felt him near me from time to time since his passing. I know he has some awareness of what's been happening which is a comfort to me (And I'm pretty sure I'm not schizo).

Thank you for telling me, Ceridwen! I always think people are going to run in and throw the combustion card too.

I have my Sun conjunct Jupiter in the 1st and I have always been optimistic, jovial, fun-loving, loud, and consistently put my foot in my mouth by saying what everyone's dancing around. It's often gotten me in trouble or made everyone burst out in raucous laughter at my audacity. Other than that, I have no Sagittarius planets or angles. The only thing I can contribute such a Sag-like expression is this conjunction, especially since the Sun in my chart rules my 5th House.

In theory the combustion makes a lot of sense because the Sun is so hot and bright that we cannot see planets close to it and we would think it would burn out any energy near it. I can really understand how this theory arose in the first place. Though Astrology, for me, is all about what actually works and searching for that truth.

I love that you've had the heart to tell me your experience because my greatest desire is to be practical about understanding myself and others. Thank you so much!

P.S. You can just see all my Earth quality come out in this post.

That has been my experience as well. I tend to use either Placidius, Koch or Regiomantus (and I've probably spelled 2 out of 3 of those incorrectly ).

I've found that when a planet is near the cusp of a house where it changes from one to another, that both tend to work equally well. Or, put another way, that "cusp" planet effects BOTH houses and needs to be treated as being in both -- like it's sitting on a fence and could go either way depending on what you chose to do with it at any given time.

May I ask the effect of sun conjunction mercury/uranus in the 12th ? I guess that it would not be so potent, since the 12th house is said to put a foggy veil on planets that fall in it ?

The orbs are wide so I don't know if they can be considered combustions. (4 and 5 degrees)

Hey 12Muddy!

I don't have either of those conjunctions but Ceridwen gave her personal experience of Sun conjunct Mercury up there. ^^^

I could give you a book's description of both of those aspects. Could you tell me if they fit or not, please?

Aspects In Astrology by Sue Tompkins

quote:
Sun Conjunct Mercury

Self-knowledge. Independent thinker. Strong opinions. Importance of knowledge.

Since the Sun and Mercury can never be more than 28 degrees of longitude apart from each other, the only aspect possible in the natal chart between these two bodies is clearly the conjunction.

There is a tradition, I think an Arabic one, that when a planet is within 5 degrees of the Sun it is ‘combust’ or ‘burnt’ by the Sun and when within 30 minutes of the Sun, in extreme combustion, it is known as casimi. A casimi Mercury is thought by some authorities to describe superior intellect and a combust Mercury to be descriptive of a mind that is in some way debilitated. Personally, I can neither deny nor affirm the casimi tradition and it has to be said that cases where Mercury is that close to the Sun aren’t common enough for a case to be proven either way. People I have known with Mercury casimi seem to me to be just like anyone else as far as brain-power goes. In my view, the Sun, when conjunct Mercury, far from burning out Mercury, gives it power and force.

Basically, Sun– Mercury people extend their ego over their opinions; they identify more strongly with what might be called the ‘rational’ mind. This is a person who identifies with their thoughts, ideas and with what they actually say. Those with this combination want what they say to be important and to be recognised as such: a kind of ‘I am what I say, I am what I think’ philosophy.

For Sun– Mercury, knowledge is important, something to be proud of, something to be expressed with power, authority and confidence. At best the individual’s goal in life is to be a genuine authority in some area and not just believe that they are. Depending on the sign and aspects to the conjunction, those with this combination can often express their ideas with confidence and enthusiasm. This conjunction describes an opportunity for the individual to think for themselves, to form their own ideas, to be a real independent thinker. The main problem with the conjunction can be the inability of the individual to perceive any viewpoint other than their own. Everybody’s opinions are subjective. The problem with Sun– Mercury is that the individual can fail to realise that their opinions are not, and never can be, entirely impartial, nor the ultimate answer, and that other people do have completely different but perfectly valid ideas.

One can do no better than quote John Addey in Selected Writings:

"Mr Carter has pointed out in his Aspects that this contact tends to be too mentally fixed, to incline on its worst side towards obstinacy, opinionatedness and pomposity and to be somewhat blinded by its pride and personal feelings generally. The student might consider how this tendency will affect the Mercurial faculties: the powers of observation, the sight, the memory, the speech, the adaptability and the rest. . . . One might compare this contact with the story of Icarus who flew too near the Sun on the wings made by his ingenious father, and also with the story of Bellerophon who did something similar on the winged steed Pegasus, and being thrown for his presumption was obliged to wander through the world blind and lame."

Given that the Sun and Mercury are so close to each other in the sky, we can take this to mean that we are all, being merely mortal, owners of purely subjective knowledge, a mere armoury of opinions based on insufficient information, incapable of perceiving any situation from all angles and in its entirety.

It is easy to see how the combust idea arose for potentially the Sun– Mercury individual can have something of a blind spot about their ideas; at best an independent thinker, at worst an overly subjective thinker whose viewpoint is so narrow that when disagreed with they construe the difference of opinion as a personal attack.

The sign placement of the conjunction is obviously crucial, as are aspects to it. A square from Saturn to the conjunction might describe someone who, far from being overly sure of their ideas, feels very unsure about them and about their ability to communicate them. The conjunction in this instance would be more likely to indicate that the person desperately wants what they think and say to be important. Similarly, the possible opinionatedness and obstinacy is more likely to be a negative feature of the fixed signs and less likely with water and air, with the exception of the fixed sign Aquarius.

Sun– Mercury types usually appreciate the importance of brothers and sisters and others in the immediate environment. Unless the conjunction is picked up by Saturn or Pluto, Sun– Mercury people may well come from large families, raised in an atmosphere where there were lots of comings and goings and plenty of chat. Sometimes the father is a talkative type. The presence of a largish family may, in part, explain the Sun– Mercury easy gift for conversation and smalltalk. The type is interested and interesting, curious about everything, anxious to know and keen to learn.

Assuming the conjunction is a tight one and that it falls in an appropriate sign, Sun– Mercury types share Sun in Gemini characteristics, usually being chatty, expressive (often talking with their hands) and inquisitive people, with a tendency to touch their listener every now and then to make sure they’re still listening, and a penchant for asking you forty questions the minute you walk in the door. Usually Sun– Mercury types have a healthy ability to think and talk about themselves and their goals.

The conjunction is favoured for all occupations and activities of a Mercurial nature: all forms of communication, education, agency work, transport and anything which involves the connecting of people, places and ideas.

quote:
Sun Conjunct Uranus

Reformer, rebel, radical, anarchist, innovator and revolutionary.

Insistence on freedom and independence. Importance of truth. Pride in uniqueness and originality. Change meets resistance. Usually those with the conjunction and hard aspects especially, exhibit a very strong urge to be unique, to be different from others. More common still, is a very marked, strongly independent spirit. Sometimes though, those with Sun– Uranus contacts may on one level want above all else to be ‘different’, but on another level may desire to conform. Hard contacts, particularly, between these planets can describe a situation where the individual feels that they are odd, eccentric, different and alienated in some way and what they would most like would be to fit in. On the one hand being ‘different’ might have afforded them some recognition, some attention within the family. On another level, it may have made them feel like an outsider. Carter talks of the combination as being prone to taking ‘the wrong end of the stick’. Sometimes, I suspect this touchiness has arisen because the individual feels sensitive about being laughed at or pointed out as different, for some reason.

Whatever the personal history there seems to be a strong urge to break free from it, to wage a revolutionary war against whatever traditions and values one was born into. Frequently, Sun– Uranus types cannot bear to think of themselves as being anything like, or in any way associated with, some authority-figure or regime they encountered when young. Commonly, the rebellion is against an early father-figure but sometimes it is against one’s country or the political atmosphere in which one was raised, or some other collective influence. This marked urge to rebel and be ‘different’ is of course much less marked in the charts of those with the soft aspects, who, happy in the knowledge that they are unique, feel less propelled into having to go out into the world and prove it.

The main problem with the hard aspects is that the person will insist on doing things in their own way sometimes because they have met tremendous resistance to their attempts to do so in the past. Co-operation can be difficult to achieve with this combination, though a strongly placed Venus will do much to offset this tendency. If you want to come to an arrangement with a typical Sun– Uranus person it’s best to be entirely honest (the type cannot bear being ‘handled’) and be prepared to give plenty of space and freedom. Telling a Sun– Uranus type what to do, or what is best, will seldom have the desired result. Even if they have the same idea themselves, they will often take a contrary line. This difficulty in co-operating may arise because the person fears that their spirit will in some way be crushed, that they might lose their individuality if they bend.

It can also mean that the individual may sometimes find themselves out in the cold, alienated, an outsider and a loner. Sometimes this alienation occurs because the individual is merely expressing views that are very ahead of their time or too advanced for the people they are with. In any event their views will often meet with great resistance from others.

Sometimes, the resistance occurs not so much because of the nature of the individual’s views as because of their manner of expressing them. Because they tend to expect resistance, Sun– Uranus people may express themselves in a rather tense and forceful way. The condition of Mercury and Venus may do much to modify this. Additionally, those with Sun– Uranus conjunctions or hard aspects can be incredibly perverse, unpredictable, stubborn and wilful. Not uncommonly, their stubbornness elicits the same kind of entrenched stubborn reaction from others. The extreme Sun– Uranus type may also be very inconsistent, inflexibly supporting and pursuing a particular course of action one day, and advocating the opposite course only days later. More frustrating still, the type will be seemingly unaware of their turnaround in outlook. Sun– Uranus views can be very extreme, and expressed in the most uncompromising fashion. But this is, in itself, an extreme interpretation. Sun– Uranus usually only exhibits this kind of extreme behaviour and revolutionary, anarchist tendencies when either the contact is angular or Aquarius is also strongly emphasised in the chart.

Sometimes the situation in which the Sun– Uranus individual finds themselves is one in which compromises cannot or should not be made anyway. Sun– Uranus will think along these lines in any case. For example, I have known several fiercely anti-apartheid white South Africans with Sun– Uranus contacts. They are making a strong statement, not only about apartheid but about themselves – the statement being: we are different from the regime that we have come from. Behind that statement may lurk the fear that they may indeed be tarred with the same brush or that they may be viewed by others in that light. Their background also sets them apart as being ‘different’. Basically those with Sun– Uranus hard aspects often have a problem with change. It may seem that the Sun– Uranus individual wants to introduce changes all over the place, which is often the case in the outer world. But on a more personal level, Sun– Uranus is, I suggest, very frightened of change. On a day-to-day level, Sun– Uranus finds it very difficult to move on – all the more so if mutability or air is weak in the chart, so that when change does occur it is often drastic and seems to come from the outside world and not through choices made by the individual. Such dramatic and drastic changes can be viewed as the result of a release of a built-up need for reform, alteration and movement. On all levels, change creates resistance. Sun– Uranus people may be stubbornly reluctant (or sometimes unable for practical or sociological reasons) to change themselves of their own lives. Not only is there fear and resistance coming from inside themselves but also there is an expectation of resistance from other people. Commonly Sun– Uranus people are frightened that others mean to change them, and indeed all of us are changed by contact with other people and new situations. We need a fairly strong ego in order to be flexible enough to accommodate change and it often takes Sun– Uranus some years to develop a strong inner core and self-image. I have known several blind people with hard Sun– Uranus squares. For them, even the most minor changes in their environment can mean the difference between being able to move around or having to be rooted to the one spot, or at best only being able to proceed with extreme caution.

The Sun– Uranus tendency towards always taking a contrary line from the mainstream, to generally putting ‘a spanner in the works’ of whatever is going on, need not be viewed negatively, for surely it is the purpose of those with this combination to get themselves into positions where these qualities are required. It is the purpose of this combination to implement change. The Sun– Uranus individual can be superb at breathing new life into any situation where change is needed. Any situation where things have become stultified, rigid or taken for granted. Many people who work with computers or other forms of advanced technology have strong Sun– Uranus contacts and such technology does strongly challenge previous ways of working. Computers challenge Saturnian boundaries, for, like many inventions, they save time. They also meet with resistance in many office situations. The Sun– Uranus mission is not only to challenge outmoded traditions but to help others find the freedom to discover their own uniqueness and pride in the truth. Frequently, the Sun– Uranus individual acts as a trailblazer and spokesperson for progress and this is how these contacts might best be utilised. Sun– Uranus can be inflexible and self-willed but then they often get themselves into situations where these qualities are required in order that change does take place.

Sun– Uranus types can make wonderful reformers. They have little respect for authority and therefore do not feel constrained by it. Instead, they have great talent for cutting across tradition and conservatism. This type does not accept things merely because they have always been done in a certain way or because the voice of some authority states that this is how they are going to be done in the future.

Even so, in implementing changes, those with Sun– Uranus hard aspects can go overboard. Instead of just wanting to make a few changes here and there, Sun– Uranus may take a really radical line, and want to pull out all the roots as well, which may or may not be appropriate. Not surprising therefore, that the extreme Sun– Uranus type will often meet with great resistance from others who are likely to be affected by the upheaval. Sometimes the root of this behaviour can be that the individual wants to pull up and rebel against their own roots, and especially against what is experienced as the father’s roots. It is not uncommon to find the father of the Sun– Uranus individual (and I have found this particularly with the conjunction) to have been something of a bully and an authoritarian. Hardly surprising therefore that the individual often wants to be as different from this early father or other authority-figure as possible. Ironically, in their insistence on following a different path, their insistence on deviating from the norm, Sun– Uranus can exhibit the same fascist tendencies as that early authority-figure or regime did. Not infrequently the father ‘cut out’ in the some way with these aspects, even if it was only behaving in an impersonal and aloof manner. Commonly, he found it difficult to integrate his desire for space and freedom with the responsibilities demanded of him by fatherhood. Maybe he literally deserted the family. Perhaps he was not so much missing as inconsistent and the child either did not know if and when he or she would see him or did not know how he was likely to behave. Sometimes he is just very different, for some reason, from other fathers. This might make him very exciting or productive of a deep inner insecurity.

Being a radical usually means that in large sectors of one’s community, one is likely to be an outsider. This doesn’t seem to worry Sun– Uranus in the way it would other types. Perhaps Sun– Uranus does not want to join the club, for it often turns its nose up at the rest of humanity and announces itself, by default, to be much more worthy. Choosing not to toe the line with the rest of the family or the rest of society, leaves Sun– Uranus unfettered and free, though sometimes also out in the cold. Whilst compassion is not part of its armoury, the Sun– Uranus person can often be found championing the cause of the underdog. The underdog is usually also ostracised from society and Sun– Uranus, amongst other things, can identify with the brand of alienation. With their insistence on their own personal freedom, it’s hardly surprising either that this combination will also often be active in the charts of those that support causes that campaign for freedom and civil rights.

Those with the easy contacts between these planets are less likely to exhibit the extreme stubbornness, perversity and wilfulness of the hard contacts and sometimes the conjunction. Neither will they give rise to individuals with the potential to change the world. The soft aspects incline to a more gentle unconventionality. The person feels different, is motivated by being so, and is happy about it. Those with the square aspects are often not that certain about whether they are really all that different, or whether they really want to be. Both the conjunction and square aspects can give rise to a very taut kind of nervous tension and also a need to dramatise the self in the most drastic and unusual ways. The individual may feel a bit like the strings on a violin that have been strung too tight. Bordering on genius perhaps or bordering on hysteria.

Sigmund Freud, whose early work was with so-called ‘hysterical’ patients and whose revolutionary ideas have stood the test of time, was born with a Sun– Uranus conjunction. The psychiatrist, R. D. Laing has a tight square between these planets and is well known for being a rebel in his field and for his radical approaches to mental illness. He speaks much of alienation in his work. The actress Vanessa Redgrave has Sun in Aquarius square Uranus conjunct MC. She is perhaps as much known for her radical views as for her electrifying performances on stage. Another radical, Germaine Greer, also has the same square.

Or, put another way, that "cusp" planet effects BOTH houses and needs to be treated as being in both -- like it's sitting on a fence and could go either way depending on what you chose to do with it at any given time.

Yes, that is being described in the 1/6th rule. If a planets is 1/6th before the next cusp it often is interpreted as also influencing the next house, too.

It is usually explained in the example of the Sun in the 7th and 6th house.
The Sun (and all planets) move from ASC (sunrise) over MC (noon) to DESC (sunset); however after the sun has set, and thus the Sun has already entered the 6th house, there is still light or twilight, even though technically the Sun is already in the night half of the chart (bottom or below horizon, and this is sometimes transferred in meaning to other planets as well.

For me honestly, I have Uranus on 1.21 Scorpio, with 11th house cusp on 1.35 Scorpio. Uranus definitely belongs into my 11th house (maybe 10th house, too, but not too sure about it), but I think its marked placement there has probably more to do with being conjunct the cusp so tightly.
Personally I wouldn`t give more leeway than about one degree for cusps, but of course opinions on this vary.
If you follow the 1/6th rule it means that if a planet in a 30 degree big house is in the last 5 degrees of that house it is still influcening the next one.

I am very sure you are not shizo. And I am sorry for your loss, I don`t even want to imagine losing a parent. It is of course tough with grandparents, too, and we are a closeknit family, and my grandma has been a part of my life since I have been 5 years old - with that I mean, living in the same house for most of the time.

She was 92 though, and I am certain she is at peace now. I am just mourning for that what was and can never be again, and that what could never be.
Quite selfishly I am sad because I know just how much we are going to miss her. and I am also mourning to see my Dad grieving. After all she was his mom, (his Dad died in 1989).

however I still can feel my grandparents around now and then. As a matter of fact some weeks ago I dreamed of my granddad (that is not happening very often; It is not like I relaly dream of him, but more so like he simply uses my dreamstate to appear and get my attention); in that dream he stated that it was time for my grandma to come home and be with him.

Equal fits my chart better so I use Equal. Placidus places my Chiron in 10th and Equal places my Chiron in 11th. I can relate to Chiron in 11th descriptions.

^^^ Hm. . . Is Chrion on the cusp of the 11th in non-equal house systems Anon? Like Ceridwen was speaking about a couple posts back.

Just curious!

Ms Prism,

yes, I can see how the theory of combustion theoretically makes sense.
I just have observed and experienced it differently.

It is also very obvious in synastry. If ther eis a conjunction to the Sun, the other planet does not disappear at all, quite the opposite, it is getting very pronounced.

As for your example, yes i can relate to much of it:

"self-knowledge. Independent thinker. Strong opinions. Importance of knowledge."
Knowledge is important to me. Also because I was taught thta it is.

Actually my mom used to say when we were kids that "knowledge is power"; with power she meant that knowledge gives the ability to make own decisions and have clarity of mind and thus possibly recognizing attempts of manipulations sooner.
Always power in the sense of having power or control over ones own life, getting empowered, not yielding power over others though.

"This is a person who identifies with their thoughts, ideas and with what they actually say. Those with this combination want what they say to be important and to be recognised as such: a kind of ‘I am what I say, I am what I think’ philosophy."
Yes. DEfinitely.

I think, therefore I am.
This saying by DEscartes (cogito, ergo sum), resonated deeply within me even as a child.

As a matter of fact my mom loves to tell the story how I would get a raging fit in a shop, screaming and shouting, trampling and hitting the ground with my fist. I was really angry (which happened rarely). And when she was asking me what was wrong, I apparently said to her: "You can read everything. And I can read nothing. I am stupid." (I was 3 or 4 years at that time).
It made me mad that I couldn`t participate in all that information spread out there.
Actually it sometimes still irks me if I hear people talk in a foreign language, and I can`t understand it. It`s maddening.
I guess it is the symptom of me constantly needing input.

"This conjunction describes an opportunity for the individual to think for themselves, to form their own ideas, to be a real independent thinker."
yes.

"The main problem with the conjunction can be the inability of the individual to perceive any viewpoint other than their own. Everybody’s opinions are subjective."
I am actually very aware of that, and always tress that. Of course I have my opinion because I believe in it and have found it to be true. If not, it would not be my opinion. But of course it is still a subjective one. But I am a subject, and not an object, how could I be objective in the last degree?
But the thing I am very adamant about is, that noone can be.
Every human being is subjective.
And as a matter of fact people rub me the wrong way who think that they have inhaled the whole and sole and ultimate truth with a breath of holy smoke, or something like that.

"e can take this to mean that we are all, being merely mortal, owners of purely subjective knowledge, a mere armoury of opinions based on insufficient information, incapable of perceiving any situation from all angles and in its entirety."
I want to STRESS that big time!

" when disagreed with they construe the difference of opinion as a personal attack."
It`s true in a way.
Well, Idon`t see it as a personal attack. But since thoughts are so important to me, if there is a deep disagreement about fundamental things, there is no way hte other person could ever be close to me. It is just a basic incompatibility. I wouldn`t see it as someone`s fault though, or as a personal attack; just that a close relationship wouldn`t work out with me.

"Sun– Mercury types usually appreciate the importance of brothers and sisters and others in the immediate environment."
Yes, definitely.

My conjunction is in Sagittarius, and I also have Jupiter in Pisces in 3rd house.

" Sun– Mercury people may well come from large families, raised in an atmosphere where there were lots of comings and goings and plenty of chat."
Yes.

" Sometimes the father is a talkative type. "
Oh yes, he never stops talking. They say men are more silent than women, well that is not true for the paternal side of my family, including my little brother. They can talk (and sometimes have monologues and lectures) for hours.

"often talking with their hands)"
Yeah, better put these glasses on the table in a good distance from me. They WILL get smashed otherwise.

"with a tendency to touch their listener every now and then"
No, I don`t.
