quote: Originally posted by peony: Steve Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist during the 1960s and 1970s. He was the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement which goal was to empower and mobilize the black population in urban areas. Biko coined the slogan "black is beautiful." Again, we see a fire sign prominent with Sun in Sagittarius. His Sun is conjunct Mars and opposes Uranus. Biko is a Promethean figure who worked to liberate blacks under an oppressive and brutal regime. A love of justice is shown by the Jupiter-Saturn square. Saturn-Pluto shows up again with Saturn conjunct Pluto. We see Saturn-Pluto correlations: extreme hardship, imprisonment, a highly sensitive moral conscience confronting the apartheid regime. After his arrest in August, 1977, and during his interrogation he is tortured and beaten resulting in a coma. Almost a month later, near death, Biko is transported to a prison with hospital facilities in Pretoria, 1100 km away. He died soon after arriving at the prison. Biko is considered to be a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.
Great find, peony, and great astro analysis! The birth time seems unknown, or is it? Here's a photograph of Steve Biko if someone would like to take a guess at his AC: IP: Logged |

Aristides de Sousa Mendes came to my mind imediately when I read the topic. He was a Portuguese consul in Bordeaux and he disobeyed orders by issuing around 30000 visas to jews who were trying to escape. He had problems with governmental authorities all his life, not just for his actions during the war. He was a bit extravagant. He justified his helping of the WWII refugees with his Christian faith. Time of birth is reported to be "a few minutes after midnight". I would say by his looks that the ASC/Sun combo looks right. But I would like your opinions very much ;-) You can read about him here: http://www.independent.co.uk/ne ws/people/profiles/sousa-mendes-saved-more-lives-than-schindler-so-why-isnt-he-a-household-name-too-2105882.html The chart: What caught my attention was Sun/Moon square (0º) Jupiter square Pluto (3º)"authority issues..." I think Mercury in Leo gave him the braveness to defy the government since he actively contested the foreign ministry decisions in writing several times. Also his NN in Pisces and his Sun in Cancer for me explain why he was such a compassionate person. Saturn in the 2nd for me is quite revealing of how he ended his life with economic deprivation.

You said: "Steve Bicko: more angular Pluto with Venus-Jupiter square it and Saturn conjunct it." What do you mean "more angular." There's no TOB for Biko, but 12 hours or so isn't going to make much difference.
"More" meaning another chart showing such aspects involving Pluto.

Thousands of inhabitants of his village community survived the disaster unharmed due to his decades-long effort. Here’s the story of this man’s visionary deed: Wamura was a double Pisces. His chart with unknown birth time is here: So, where do you think did his visionary talent and determination to push through come from? Interestingly, here we see Mars/Pluto in hard aspect again - tied to the nodal axis, with Pluto conj. True Node.
Determination is a Mars-Pluto trait and he has Mercury and Venus in Aquarius, which looks to the future. But, I also think his Saturn-Neptune and the prior disasters he had seen fueled his determination to protect his city and its residents. A very touching story, thanks for sharing it, Vajra. I hope your child has recovered. IP: Logged |

Chelsea Manning, a former U.S. Army intel analyst, was tried and convicted under the Espionage Act for leaking government files to Wikileaks. Among the materials leaked was a video known as "Collateral Murder," in which 19 people were killed, including Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Dldeen and his assistant Saeed Chmagh, on July 12, 2007. These leaks exposed the detainment of innocent people at Guantanamo Bay, contractor abuse, uninvestigated civilian casualties, uninvestigated reports on torture, and the role that corporations and government spying play in international diplomacy. The Manning case highlights the severe consequences that whistleblowers who seek to inform the public of government wrongdoing face. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The New York Times Editorial Board published this response to the sentence: "35 years is far too long a sentence by any standard. In more than two weeks of hearings, government lawyers presented vague and largely speculative claims that Private Manning's leaks had endangered lives and 'chilled' diplomatic relations. On the other hand, much of what Private Manning released was of public value." She has received the following honors and awards: Sam Adams Award (2014) - Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence Sean Macbride Peace Prize (2013) - International Peace Bureau In His Footsteps Award (2013) - Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club Nobel Peace Price nominee (2014, 2013 & 2012) - Movement of the Icelandic Parliament, Oklahoma Center for Conscience and Peace Research, and former Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire Person of the Year (2012) UK Guardian 2013 Peace Price - US Peace Memorial Foundation Peacemaker of the Year (2013) - The Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma County Hero of Peace Award (2013) - San Francisco Trans March SF Pride Grand Marshal Runner-Up (2013) - SF LGBT Pride former Grand Marshals People's Choice Human Rights Award (2012) - Global Exchange IP: Logged |

That's an excellent suggestion! I've long been fascinated with such inspiring people and often wondered what made them act the way they did, when so many others gave in to fear, paranoia and cruelty. It could be very interesting to examine a few such charts, and try to find out where they found this kind of soul strength. There are some obvious male examples to look at, such as Schindler, and I would also like to include a few women - e.g. Irena Sendler, who smuggled about 2,500 children out of the Warsaw Ghetto, or the badass resistance fighter Nancy Wake. So let's start with Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who, although not herself a Jew, immediately sided with them when discrimination first started in occupied Poland: IRENA SENDLER This is her chart with asteroids Knight, Excalibur, and Angel added - any further suggestions? Sadly the time of birth is unknown. What stands out to you in this chart, as far as one can interpret it? It's interesting to note it's a low water chart - only generational Neptune in that element, but it's of course possible she had a Water AC. Also, she has a Saturn - Jupiter - Neptune - Uranus Grand Cross in Cardinal signs, a possible Moon conj. Mars (depending on the birth time, of course) and Sun conj. Chiron.

Oscar Romero was the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador. He was an advocate of social justice and spoke out against poverty, assassinations, and torture during the Salvadoran Civil War. In 1980, Romero was assassinated in church while celebrating mass. The perpetrators of his murder are widely believed to have been members of a death squad. His funeral was attended by over 250,000 people from around the world. In October, 1978, 119 British parliamentarians nominated Romero for the Nobel Peace Prize. Twenty-six members of the U.S. Congress supported his nomination. Romero is currently in the final stage of the process of being canonized as a saint by the Vatican. Romero's chart may be the first departure from the "low water" trend in these portraits. His love and compassion are apparent with his Leo Sun, Cancer ASC, Cancer Moon, and Saturn-Neptune conjunction in the 1H. Although Mars is on the cusp of the 1H, it is conjunct Pluto in the 12H, which makes me think a death squad was responsible for his death.
