I don’t think I’m dumb at all or anything but I really hate it when people use big or fancy words on me. Like I can stand it when I write an essay or a formal document but in normal/casual conversation, it literally drives me nuts. Like.. just sit down and talk like a normal person lol I don’t need to be looking up words in my dictionary right now. I hate reading astrology descriptions that have a lot of fancy words on them either. Plus the more fancy words you use, the more you sound like a snotty as*hole.I have Mercury in Virgo in the 3rd house. It’s my chart ruler. You’d think Virgo would like big words. But no. Virgo likes easy to understand words. IP: Logged |

I don't mind big words. What I DO mind are words that have no real meaning (though many use them as if they did), and especially words are meant to confuse, mislead, or intimidate, or otherwise to give an aura of legitimacy to something that would not have it were it plainly stated. Politics and other unethical fields are rife with it, of course, but many professions do it simply to add billing hours (and in some cases will even pass laws to hinder or even prohibit research for clarification at a library as they want people to pay them big bucks to translate their terms which are actually slang, cant, and even gobbledygook that could be easily explained in simple words were the professional organizations more ethical). And here's one of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes comics: Perhaps it comes from having a 3H Libra mercury on the Scorpio cusp along with my sun, in a stellium, sextile with a 5H Sag stellium. I know what you mean! There’s some sort of superiority complex going on there! I also don’t like it when people criticize others for swearing. “There are more intelligent ways to express yourself” they say. Or, they utter some nonsense on having a limited vocabulary. Lol! Bit*ch, you’re the one with a “limited” vocabulary! What else are you closing yourself off to? Some use inferior language; others use inferior logic. Usually, these people are just being insulting, which is annoying. Sometimes, they seriously believe that. I don’t. I don’t like putting limits on what I express or how I express it. Sometimes, I like the shock and awe effect of a perfectly timed F-bomb! I’m not above swearing. If that makes me an unintelligent lowlife then so be it. I think adopting a mindset that closes your mind off to certain things is much worse, which is what it feels like to me. Like, just STFU. IP: Logged |

I love love love em. There is a way of saying one thing succinctly that when using ordinary words, it drags on.The mayor did not do what she was supposed to do according to what she had agreed and went on a holiday for a very long time. The mayor underperformed on her promises opting instead for an extended vacation. The second one has poetry. I love people who play with words IP: Logged |

I like to swear and I like sarcasm (with easy words) and I like being vulgar without being ridiculous. I don’t like pretentious words from people with less than stellar personas or any other person for that matter. Life is complicated as it is and I like to simplify so to not be misunderstood. Misunderstandings or diffuse meanings will activate the Scorpio in me and then I will start to dig and ask questions.....and you will be very very tired of me very quickly.....so: keep it simple! I don't like fancy or complicated words from someone who uses them with no meaning behind, however I have no problem listening to complex ideas with complex words from an intelligent person. When they are used appropriately IP: Logged |

I can't say I like big words either, but I seem to learn vocabulary quite easily, so my issue is not necessarily any word that is used in a conversation. My issue is actually when phrasing is vague and difficult to determine the meaning of. With big words, this is occasionally a problem as sometimes big words are used to confuse others or the amount of complex vocabulary just suggests that the person using them is a complete douche with no consideration for how their communication tactics will be received. Using too many big words just says to me that a person may enjoy studying the dictionary or a thesaurus and they think they're apparently the only person with the intellect to use them. Using big words incorrectly is another topic entirely.Another thing I've noticed is I sometimes struggle to pronounce simple words thus I end up forced to use an alternative word to avoid the embarrassment of struggling to pronounce a word from my first language (English) and that I may have learned at like 8 or 9 years old. "Calculator" is a word I struggle to pronounce correctly, for example. Maybe I pronounce it right, maybe I don't. One thing is truly apparent: I don't have an alternative word for this object and it's a painful reality that every time I speak this word it may be obvious that I have trouble pronouncing it. hahahahahaha I like you. hahahahhaha I agree, on one hand I like it when people are witty and smooth with words but key word here is witty and smoooth...when you start dropping SAT words here and there, I feel you are just trying to show off and is annoying. Once in a blue moon it won't bug me too much but if I start to seee is a pattern is like "really?" one of my coworkers did that last week twice, the first time did not bother me, the second is like "lol, come on, you are just trying to show off!, get over yourself." Its both a blessing and a curse. If we were lawyers we'd be arguing if the "words" fit the definition. You could use it to form a defense or prove the suspect is in clear violation of the "words" depends on how good the person is at twisting the "words" or cleary defining it. I understand your pain I don't read/write essay's but the half of the papers I have to read turn into math theories when there is an easier way to explain something. Sometimes its approprate to use a math proof other times just explain it in easy terms. Yes I think so, my sun/mercury in virgo thinks is hot when a guy is witty and smooth with words, but I think the leo placements in me like for it to be used for flirting and humor so I enjoy it if is used for that purpose but if you are just trying to show off SAT words it annoys me LOL. Having a Leo Sun, it sounds like a Mercury thing. Mine being in water in the 12th makes it hard to put my thoughts in words effectively. But, I can sell a person sweat in a desert (if I believe in it). IP: Logged |

All the Leos I know hate when people use big words, they get agitated by it easily. They are not stupid but it bothers them when people can't just say stuff simply and plainly instead of glamorizing every sentence for the hell of it. I think this is a Leo thing. The ones that tick them off the most are Taurus. Our Taurus friends are always glamorizing their words and using big words and sentences, and the Leo friends get very agitated on the low. They don't say it out loud but you can see it in the their face lol. Mercury is my chart ruler in the 8th and I tend to use big words dramatically at times and they have expressed how annoying it is that I do this. My Mercury is in Capricorn. I am mainly talking about Suns moons and rising but sometimes I see it happen with the mercuries too. IP: Logged |

I have mercury in virgo rx in the 10th novile and parallel pluto, mercury rules my 8th. I enjoy having deep conversations and love presenting complex insights and observations. I even like labels and constructs that describe well certain concepts that I can apply to my life and find useful but I try to explain things in a simple way even if it is something complex, I am practical in how I use language and don't like to over complicate conversations putting at risk my message will not be understood. Vulgar without being ridiculous! Lol! (I’m probably gonna repeat that at some point in my life) Yes exactly, good point! There is a difference. There is also a difference with people using “proper” language that adds to a message and proper language that distracts from it. Using “smart” words and saying something smart is two different things. I guess some people need help making that distinction. Context and content matter. I think pretentiousness is exactly what SLQ is talking about. In casual conversation with a particular group, it’s inappropriate. Not conversational. Talking at people not to them. Casual conversation with a group of scholars may be different. In that case, casual may mean lots of non-standard words. IP: Logged |

You have an observable knack for expressing yourself succinctly. It’s impressive. If I could organize my perceptions this way, I’d be so much more effective. Earlier I said there is a difference between using smart words and saying something smart. I think the example you gave is an awesome illustration of that. IP: Logged |

Aries23DegreesYou don't annoy me. Like I said I love wittiness and someone smooth with words (that is creativity), but you know when someone is just dropping big words to show off LOL and this is actually getting in the way of getting their message across and has nothing to do with creativity but all to do with showing off your vocabulary, this is an important distinction. Oh yes there are those who flaunt their intellectual prowess like peacocks. I get it.In my school there are those who use verbosity as a way to distract just how little they know about the subject. Its hilarious I know Crowley had a shady reputation. I mean he did dabble in wizardry,Satanism and dark magic during his time. But wow. The man was eloquent in his writings. Oscar Wilde,Stephen Baldwin,Virginia Wolf and Joseph Campbell I can't appreciate fully by dismissing their love for complex word usage and word play. These are my heroes. Especially Wilde's dry humour. But yes I do get what y'all mean by that type of snobbery IP: Logged |

Funny...I know a guy with Gemini Venus in the 3rd house (double Gemini!) and he LOVES when a woman uses big words. LOVES IT. Words turn him on. To him they are a sign of intelligence. Probably moreso if he doesn't understand the big words...LOLOn the other hand, he HATES swearing. He himself can swear, but finds it distasteful when a woman swears. I'm not sure why this is...maybe his Venus/Neptune opp. or Libra Mars? He likes "delicate" women? No idea... IP: Logged |

"The precise meaning of words matters, a notion in disuse by the majority of people, including their presumptive leaders. The inattention to diction is pervasive, endemic, and has reached into surprising places." -- Sol Stein, Stein on Writing Big words (3 syllables, 4 syllables?) and specialty terms are necessary in astrology because it is the language of a complex set of rotations, orbits and other movements, as well as mythologies that require a lexicon of precise terms. Declination is 4 syllable word that eliminates the need to always say "____'s position north or south of the celestial equator." Until you learn the meaning of the word so that you can picture it, you might prefer the longer explanation if it puts the correct picture into you mind. However, even the longer explanation won't put that picture into the mind of a person who has never looked at the sky to watch the planets move in that fashion. I don't know what particular words are big enough or pretentious enough to put you off, but in astrology some of them cannot be avoided until communication of complex concepts evolves beyond its current state. I despise the use of the term "impactful" and I'm getting to that point at times with the overuse of "sustainable." Those are adjectives which with mindless overuse lose their impactfulness -- From a Virgo rising personality (natal Mercury conjunct Venus, parallel Mars, trine Pluto) ------------------ Soul Stars Astrology - by the declinations guy Declinations: because the planets move north and south of the celestial equator IP: Logged |
