This is horrible. The news is still being updated but some reports are stating Gabrielle Giffords, congresswoman for Tucson / Cochise County (where we live) has been shot outside of an event in Tucson.

CNN is reporting that several people have been victims of a multiple fatal shooting in north Tucson and of them possibly is Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona

At least four people are dead, University Medical Center spokesman Darci Slaten said. They were among five to seven people who were being treated.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office confirmed that it is investigating a multiple shooting at a Safeway in north Tucson at Ina and Oracle.

A man who works at Sprint store nearby told CNN he heard 15-20 shots, and there are 2 bodies on the ground in front of the Safeway. He said people were screaming that "Gabrielle Giffords has been shot."

Giffords, a Democrat serves the 8th Congressional District.

More details on azcentral.com as they become available

Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/01/08/20110108arizona-giffords-br k.html#ixzz1ATJszjiI

I'll update the thread as more info comes out. I really hope the reports are wrong and she wasn't shot in the head. How horrible

ETA... It has been confirmed that she was shot in the head and 3 of her aides were also shot- up to 4 people dead.

Hi Juni,

Yes, our county, Cochise, is in her district. She didn't win our county (it went to Jesse Kelly) but she won Tucson and the congressional seat. She did a lot for the Soldiers, Families and constituents of her district. I may not have liked all her policies but she is a good person that does care for the State and the people. My heart breaks for her family.

Well, the possible good news is that she is still alive (I hope it is true) and undergoing surgery. I hope she pulls through.

It is just so disgusting that someone would open fire on people- a child was also reported killed.

This is just awful. I wasn't going to turn the TV on today, something made me do it.

I have Foxnews on (natch) right now and they are saying she is still alive, but critical. Her husband is an astronaut, which I didn't know. My prayers go out for them and the rest of the people of Az.

Another unhinging aspect of this awful event is the description of how ordinary the day, people and stores were. To think an ordinary and seemingly uneventful day could turn into such a horrifying disaster is frightening and brings the reality of it could happen anywhere, to anyone, home

He is in the 8th district. It includes some of Pima county (Tucson), Cochise County (where Fort Huachuca is located as well as the city I live in) and a part of Pinal county. Cochise is the largest county in the district, almost 5,000 square miles but our population is less than the part of Tucson that is covered by the district.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd?state=AZ&district=8

Loughner lives in Tucson a few miles from where the shooting took place and also attended Pima college (but from his rants it sounded like he had a run in of some sort on campus).

He also said something about applying for the Army at the recruiting station in Phoenix and being angry over receiving a mini-Bible before the tests.

ETA.. Yes, he does sound like a conspiracy theorist but he also sounds like a total wacknut. He was angry at the currency, government, called professors at the college unconstitional and illiterate and stated that the cops were part of a cult.

Thank you for that link Juni! I also found another one that goes into a bit of detail about the gunman.
http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-jared-lee-loughner-profile,0,3468158.story

Also.. he was NOT in the Army as some news stations as reported. One person interviewed tried to say he was a veteran and served in Afghanistan. He tried to enlist in the Army but was rejected (the reasons were not given due to the privacy act).

It is sickening.

33 rounds of ammo

That strikes me odd Pid; why would a clip have such an odd & large number? I guess I never knew handgun clips were that large.

Following the jump is a profile of the six people killed in Saturday's shooting*:

Christina Taylor Green: Green was just 9 years old at the time of her death. She had recently been elected to the student council and was interested in government, her family told local media outlets. Greene reportedly attended Saturday's town hall with a neighbor. Her family tells the media that Green was born on Sept. 11, 2001 and was featured in a book called "Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11"."I just want her memory to live on, she's a face of hope, a face of change," Green's mother, Roxanna Green, told MSNBC. "Stop the violence, stop the hatred."

Dorothy Murray: Murray was 76. (Further details about Murray have yet to be publicly released.)

John M. Roll: Roll, 63, was a federal judge who began his judicial career in Arizona in the 1970's. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated him to serve on the U.S. District court. He rose to chief judge in 2006. Mark Kimball, a Giffords aide, told the Associated Press that he believed the judge, who lived in the area, went to the supermarket Saturday to shop. "I have never met a more sincere ... fair minded, brilliant federal judge or any judge, for that matter, in my whole life," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said of Roll.

Phyllis Schneck: Schneck was 79. (Further details about Schneck have yet to be publicly released.)

Dorwin Stoddard: Stoddard, 76, was a retiree who performed maintenance work at his church, the Mountain Avenue Church of Christ, reports the Arizona Daily Star. Stoddard's minister, Mike Nowak, called Stoddard "a terrific guy, a jack-of-all-trades." When the shooting started, Dorwin reportedly tried to protect his wife by laying on top of her. She was wounded but is expected to recover.

Gabe Zimmerman: Zimmerman, 30, served as Giffords' outreach director and was attending Saturday's event as a staff member. Zimmerman's colleagues told reports on the scene that Zimmerman carried out his job with compassion. "Gabe was a master at dealing with people. He truly cared about helping people. There were no politics involved in this," Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin told the Arizona Republic. House Speaker John Boehner announced Sunday that flags would be flown at half staff to honor Zimmerman. Zimmerman was reportedly engaged to be married.

(*Victims confirmed by Pima County Sheriff's office; names and ages confirmed by Associated Press.)

Leftists...that's Marxists, Leninists, Stalinists, Maoists, Socialists and Progressives...in Congress and out...are attempting to make political hay out of the murders in Arizona.

The radical leftist's reaction to any tragedy is to shut others up who disagree with them, blame political opponents, decry heated rhetoric...except their own, of course and grab guns.

I know leftists haven't heard this before but the 1st Amendment protects the right of free speech...including political speech.

I know leftists haven't heard this before but the 2nd Amendment protects the right of citizens to keep and bear arms...including handguns...even in the US Capitol.

Now, the idiot Sheriff in Pima County...a demoscat has mouthed off that this tragedy is a result of talk radio and some television networks...guess which ones he's talking about. In the same breath, he called Arizona the "Mecca of bigotry and hate". Citizens of Pima County should hand this inflammatory leftist idiot a pink slip and send him home to watch Oprah now that she has her own network.

Some idiots are attempting to blame Sarah Palin...the usual leftist morons who can always be seen on failing television networks flapping their lips or read in failing newspapers exercising their fingers without first engaging what few braincells they possess.

One member of Congress plans to introduce legislation forbidding any speech or imagery which threatens members of Congress or federal employees....in someones opinion. Trying to set up a "protected class" giving them rights not possessed by citizens at large smacks of "Titles of Nobility" which are forbidden in the United States.

Another member of Congress plans to introduce another anti-2nd Amendment bill to ban or restrict gun rights.

These people should surely be fired by their constituents.

An effort is being made by leftists to tie Jared Loughner to the Tea Parties. That's not going to fly...but they're trying anyway. You see, it doesn't matter if something is true or not in the minds of leftists. It only matter whether or not leftists can manipulate others to "believe" it's true.

In reality, Jared Loughner is another crackpot leftist...of the very same variety found in the O'Bomber administration. Found on Jared Loughner's favorite books list is "Mein Kampf", written by the insane National Socialist, Hitler AND "The Communist Manifesto" written by the 5th rate thinker, 19th century hack Karl Marx. Loughner is described by some of his classmates as "a far left pothead". This is not the stuff of Tea Party members OR Sarah Palin.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/01/09/pima-county-sheriff-sets-debate-price-free-speech/

Then, there's the...taking up space, breathing the air and using precious resources to no good effect...leftist Paul Krugman of the NY Times/Treason Times. This is the newspaper which continues to explore new bottoms in what can only be called "The paper of record for Marxists, Stalinists, Leninists, Maoists, Socialists and Progressives".

Paul Krugman is only one of the reasons the Treason Times continues as a bottom feeder.

The Climate of Krugman
The Paper of Record hits rock bottom
01/10/2011

Within hours of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, lunatic “economist” Paul Krugman raced to put up a blog post blaming Sarah Palin and the Tea Party for the attack....

so you believe it is okay to exhort people with gun rhetoric, but reading mein kampf makes one a leftist wacknut plain and simple. i thought you said you had read it?

personally, as in your argument on the phoney mosque issue last year, i believe people are FREE to say what they like, but continually using metaphors suggesting SHOOTING the opposition, being armed and dangerous,
"a bullet in their head not mine"..

seems a little STUPID given the mentality of many of our citizens these days. and then giving them guns with that kind of ammo...

but hey, read mein kampf and you can be convicted as a major commie bastid RIGHT??

fess up jwhop there is wrong on all sides here and that includes you and your macho pugilistic phrases throughout these pages.

and if you don't want political hay made out of this incident I SUGGEST YOU STOP DOING SO YOURSELF. charity begins at home, does it not?

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my Conservative friend the other day. He said that he believed the first amendment protected speech so that people could be offensive. I told him, no, freedom of speech is there to protect our ability to talk about and question our government primarily. If you look at places where freedom of speech isn't protected, the punishable communication is almost in regards to government.

Palin should be more responsible than alluding to guns and violence. That's just a decent way of being particularly in this day and age of crazy people that do stuff like this. Public figures shouldn't be invoking things that can be taken the wrong way by psychopaths. I don't consider myself saying this as an attempt to shut people up as JWhop likes to say, but I would say the same to my own child, if I had a Sarah Palin-like kid in the public eye. Is it really that difficult to take psychopaths in mind when considering which words you might use? I don't think so.

Regarding free speech in general I would personally love for our legal system to once-and-for-all reconcile it's idea regarding libel and free speech. Libel, especially in the political arena, is protected under free speech far too often. Politicians are far too often allowed to spew untruths.
